The Venue Adventure - Part 1

January 17th, 2008 @ 5:04 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

As soon as we set the date, Mr. Flamingo and I started searching for venue spots. I was really excited about the whole thing. Mr. F let me do the majority of the deciding on this one… but that’s because he knew, subconsciously, it would be best. :) Honestly, I was already picky with what type of site I wanted and so the search began…

First things first, both Mr.F and I knew we didn’t want to get married in the big city (Montreal - that is)… where everything seemed so cold to us. (Don’t get me wrong - we heart Montreal.) But we also live about 35 minutes away from the downtown core, and we didn’t want to go nuts on travel the day of our wedding. Secondly, we knew we didn’t want a venue where more than one wedding occurred at the same time. It seemed impersonal to us, and frankly one of my biggest pet peeves is having one wedding party doing the conga line into another wedding.

Both Daddy Flamingo and Sister Flamingo got married at the same place, conga line and all. Don’t get me wrong, the conga line is a classic in any wedding… but I don’t want conga line crashers at our wedding.

This is a picture of my Sister Flamingos (I’m in green) at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel near the Montreal Airport when Daddy Flamingo got married (2 and a half years ago). Eldest sister Flamingo, in tangerine, got married there too (almost 5 years ago).

The place itself was nice… the food was good and the service was excellent. But it wasn’t the place for us. I’m all into traditions… but this one stops here. Sorry ;)

Another thing we both agreed on, was not to have our reception in something we call here a sugar shack / sugar house (Cabane à Sucre). These shacks are very popular, especially for French Quebecers, but I wanted a vintage glamour wedding… and there is no glam in there whatsoever. It’s more of a rustic and country style decor.

Mommy Flamingo got married in one of those when I was 13, and that was okay for her… but it wasn’t the place for our wedding.

Next post… the places we visited.

Has anyone opted for the same reception site as their parents and/or siblings? Do you have any special traditions which will be carried on to your wedding? Please share them… I’m really interested!

Venue hunting can be so tricky. Can’t wait to see where you went!

I love Montreal! But yeah, as cute as those sugar shacks are, I don’t know that it would be right for us, either. So where’d you pick? Huh, huh? ;)

We actually did end up with the same reception venue as my parents! I love the venue though - it’s an old log cabin that was perfect for us, and our ‘rustic elegance’ wedding.

I think it holds some good karma for my family :-)

We did not pick the same spot as my parents, although my dad reminded me of it every time the venue conversation came up. They were married at their alma mater, and since Mr. P and I did not go to college together and neither of us went to their school, it wasn’t a very exciting option. However, since my dad paid about $15 a plate and was able to have an after party at their cute little house close to campus, he couldn’t let it go :) Mr. P’s parents were married at a VFW (in the 1950’s).
