How can you not love these furry little guys?
Once Mr. Hummingbird and I started planning our wedding, although we are not traditionalists, there were a number of typical wedding related conversations I anticipated having.
I anticipated talking about when and where. I anticipated discussing the food. I anticipated conversations about flowers, programs and of course my dress (I swear part two in my dress saga is coming soon!).
I did not however anticipated having prolonged conversations about Ewoks.
In the months following our decision to have an Ewok Village Cake, an edible recreation of the Village of Endor, we knew we would have to look for Ewoks to adorn the cake with.
What we did not anticipate was that Ewoks would be so hard to find. Apparently, they are either very popular as people enjoy the idea of kick ass teddy bears or they are very out of production since the last movie in the original trilogy came out the year Mr. Hum was born. If we wanted to make our cake look like the new trilogy, we could find plenty of Jar Jar Binkses (does anyone really want those?) but no Ewoks, save for the 1983 model our friend Kim brought us back from her trip to New York.
We searched high and low and it seemed like Ewoks were not to be found . . . until our friend Alex called us to let us know that a comic book store he dealt with in his hometown of Ottawa got a shipment in and that he could have his little brother buy them and bring them to Toronto for us this weekend.
After I got off the phone with Alex, I was so excited I turned to Mr. Hummingbird and exclaimed with joy “We’re getting our Wedding Cake Ewoks imported from Ottawa!” As the words were coming out of my mouth, I thought nothing of them as this is the wedding we were having, but retrospectively, I realized that this statement probably makes me insane because:
1) I’ve coined the term “Wedding Cake Ewoks.”
2) I’ve made it sound as though Ewoks, like champagne and caviar, were one of those weird chic-chic things that needs to be imported.
3) My enthusiasm signified that Ottawa, as well as being home to our nation’s capital was the place for all one’s Ewok needs.
As it was amusing realization moment for me, I’m curious - Has anyone else found themselves saying or getting irrationally excited about funny things during their planning process? Tell me your stories!
A little Ewok Trivia for the weekend, courtesy of IMDB:
* The Endor shots were filmed near Crescent City, California. Forest work was especially hard on the Ewok actors. Production Assistant Ian Bryce arrived on the set one day to find a note from the Ewok actors saying that they had all had enough and they were on their way to the airport. Bryce tried to drive to the airport, but got a flat tire not far from the set. He found another car and was about to leave when the Ewoks’ bus pulled up, and all the Ewok actors got off wearing “Revenge of the Ewok” t-shirts.
* Several Ewok lines are in the Filipino (Tagalog) language. Most Ewok lines, however, were inspired by the Kalmuck language, spoken by nomadic tribes living in Central China.
* One of the songs that the Ewoks sing sounds like: “Det luktar flingor här”, which is Swedish for “It smells of cereal here.”
