The Vintage Advantage

January 21st, 2008 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Shortcake

I’m planning a vintage-inspired wedding. Originally, after watching Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor in Father of the Bride waayy too many times, I was planning on having a vintage wedding, right down to old 1950’s prom dresses for the bridesmaids.

Having a Vintage Wedding

PRO: Everything is laid out for you, like a template to follow!
CON: That template is becoming increasingly difficult to FIND
PRO: Your bridesmaids get to wear big fluffly dresses!
CON: Your bridesmaids have to wear big fluffly dresses, and you want to be friends after the wedding
PRO: Greenery-based arrangements are so much cheaper than bloom-centric arrangements
CON: People might think your flowers are cheap, and you don’t get to experience all the beautiful modern trends, like vibrant colour pairing
PRO: Vintage is IN!

So in the end, because it became increasingly difficult to reproduce or source exact wedding ideas/items from the 1950s, I decided to compromise and have a vintage-inspired wedding, so that I could incorporate both new and old trends and fashions into a (hopefully) beautiful, whimsical, and charming design.

We’re on the same wavelength with the vintage inspirated wedding! I had my dress designed as an updated version of Grace Kelly’s!

If, at 5′2″, I didn’t look like a little girl in a short dress, I’d be wearing the Jackie O. inspired “Edmonton” gown from Dolly Couture (www.dollycouture.net).

Hurray… for someone with a similar theme as me. :) Mine is vintage glamour (movies - glam - from the 1930s - 1950)

Fun stuff… we can swipe ideas!

Miss Shortcake, I love the vintage glam style as well, but since I’m also a fan of some modern twists on vintage, I coined the term “vintage charm meets modern whimsy” for my wedding :-) I like that some details have a bit of vintage flair, but at the same time I’m giving myself the freedom to incorporate some modern contrasts.

I LLOOOOOOVE Jackie Kennedy’s dress…. if only I had her petite figure!!

I love the late 1950’s look!!! We tried incorporating parts of that retro throwback, mostly in our paper products, and music. I love that era!!

The Princess Margaret (last one) neckline is amazing!

I’ve always loved this Elizabeth Taylor number (minus the boob darts–but the sheer, beaded neckline is gorgeous to me!):

My eventual wedding dress looked nothing like it. ;-)

I’m getting married in my grandmother’s dress (1945) and I’m attempting to find a dress of similar vintage for my MOH. For your BMs, are you going to get vintage-style or actual vintage, and where are you looking?

I’m all over mid-century classics. Jackie O is forever my style icon — love her!! We’re incorporating my grandparents 1954 wedding cake topper — traditional bride and groom figures — and I’m wearing my great-grandmother’s 1950’s-era brooch in my hair. The guys will also be wearing classic Rat-pack style tuxedos — self-tie bow ties with cummerbunds.
