If Only Processionals Were Longer

January 22nd, 2008 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I really need to start wearing a helmet, because any day now, the other shoe is going to drop. Probably on my head.

The fantastic luck we’ve had with finding great vendors continues, unabated. Sunday morning saw me braving a hangover to meet with Andrew Nickles, the cellist of our string quartet.

I was delighted to find that not only are Andrew and I on the same page re: weddings, we’re on the same sentence of the same paragraph. We spent ten minutes discussing the details of the performance and another twenty extolling the virtues of a non-traditional wedding over a shared donut. Complete clickage.

The quartet will be scoring our pre-game warmup and cocktail hour. Most likely they’ll be playing the processional and recessional as well…though we really have our hearts set on a bit of a tricky post-kiss song: “Holiday Road”, by Lindsey Buckingham.

Yes, that’s right. We’ll be skipping back down the aisle to the National Lampoon’s Vacation theme. I can’t wait to see the sea of stupefied expressions from the, er, elder set. If Andrew can’t find a copy of the sheet music, he’s going to have an arrangement written for the quartet. But I’m not sure how well it would transfer to stringed instruments, so I’m keeping the option of recorded music open.

And if we use a recording for the recessional, I’m massively tempted to use one for my big entrance, as well. Because I would looove to walk down the aisle to “I Love N.Y.E.” by Badly Drawn Boy. It’s just such a sweet, simple melody that would be easy to fade out for my short, solo steps.

If, however, we use the quartet, it’ll be “Intermezzo Sinfonico” by Pietro Mascagni.

And now, just because lists are therapeutic, here are my

TOP FIVE SONGS I WISH I COULD WALK DOWN THE AISLE TO, BUT I CAN’T, BECAUSE THEN WE’D JUST BE STANDING THERE FOR THREE MINUTES WAITING FOR THE SONG TO END

5. “My Beloved Monster” by Eels
4. “There She Goes” by the Las
3. “You Make Me Want To Wear Dresses” by Lisa Germano
2. “She Fell Into My Arms” by Ed Harcourt
1. “Blinking Lights (For You)” by Eels

Now, I know from Miss Hummingbird’s recent post that you guys are some seriously hip brides, so how about you? If time and tradition weren’t considerations, what song would you want to walk down the aisle to? What song best captures you?

Ah, I totally love that Ed Harcourt song! That and Apple of my Eye were both tunes I really dug in college.
If my processional was longer and we were doing lyric songs, I think I would might have picked Fresh Feeling by The Eels. As it is, I think it’s going to end up being a sting version of Madonna’s Like A Prayer or The Flaming Lips’ Do You Realize?? :)
Good luck with your song decisions. Can’t wait to hear what you pick. :)

“The Final Countdown” by Europe. My fiance was so on board with this, it was a bit crazy. However, we are extremely limited in processional choices as our church only permits religious music. ::crushed:: That leaves me pretty much using all my creative energy towards a choreographed first dance, in which I’m hoping to have a little synchronized BM participation. They’d probably threaten me with violence though, so I have yet to test those waters. If I could walk down to something, I’d seriously love a little instrumental of “Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche or “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve. The lyrics of either don’t exactly ooze with sappy, doe-eyed cupids spreading their love with sharp, metal objects, but I think they’re peaceful melodies.

“Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” by the Smashing Pumpkins. It’s an instrumental, and it’s the first song on their cd by the same name. Instead, the families are going to come into this song (it’s about 4-1/2 minutes long). But Fiance and I love this song, so we had to use it. No choice.

I really really want the instrumental version of Secret Garden by Springsteen…..I just love the music and the sax(?) “solo”…..I cannot let go of it either - it feels momentous to me (I want it for the bridal processional)….but we are having a trio - some type of jazz drum, sax and flute. However, recently we discussed hiring some string instrument and pianist for just this song - I can’t help it! It is what I envisioned! It is just so pretty…..

Oooh, Miss Lovebug, great question! You’d think my music freak self would have a quick answer, but no, this is the sort of question that requires some serious consideration… :) I’ll be back later with a Top 5.

Ooh, Kayla, love that you’re using “Hesitating Beauty” - what a perfect recessional song!

Thankfully we had wonderful musicians from our church who were more than happy to accomodate my dream of walking down the aisle to the wedding processional from “The Sound of Music.” :)

Mr beanchar and I also have much love for “I Love N.Y.E.” and anything else by Badly Drawn Boy.

Some other “non-traditional” picks for processing and/or recessing:

Cake – “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” (funniest video ever)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd34vJohGXc

Dire Straits – “Walk of Life”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrjBddCTCmk

Redbone (the “World’s First Native American Rock Band”) - “Come And Get Your Love”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xLi39E9PbA

Bill Withers – “Lovely Day”

Van Morrison – “Wavelength”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TDYW9YHRUo

Lately I am hooked on this live version of Paolo Nutini’s “Loving You” (a Scotsman with an Italian name?… perfection):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx0QERxjjno&feature=related

And for any of you named Kate, Ben Folds Five’s”Kate” would be so great for a slideshow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLkVOvHn-sU

***** NOTE: Some of beanchar’s above choices may NOT be appropriate for crowds that include easily-shocked grannies ;) —- and yes, beanchar is in the throes of a YouTube addiction.

Man-Eater? (Hall & Oates) KIDDING.
But seriously, I’ve considered “She” by Elvis Costello from the Notting Hill soundtrack.

I love “I’ll Cover You” from the musical Rent - but a male/male love duet would get some funny expressions from our guests!

Our friend/soloist is working on “‘Til Kingdom Come” by Coldplay for the processional. We are having a Catholic mass but our priest is awesome and let my sister use a unique song for her wedding, so we’ll see.

I think “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies would be an awesome recessional. “Here Comes My Baby” by Cat Stevens for the processional would be adorable. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
