I Will Follow Her

January 23rd, 2008 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

Ladies and gentle-bees, may I have your attention?

For your viewing pleasure, we now present the ultimate attendant:

The 1950’s Bridesmaid

I Will Follow Her : wedding bridesmaid dress vancouver Bridesm01

I Will Follow Her : wedding bridesmaid dress vancouver 1956 Ve

Luckily for those planning a vintage wedding,”vintage” style bridesmaids dresses are becoming easier to find because so many modern designers are loving the knee-length, a-line dress. For example, take these Candy Anthony reproduction dresses. Decidely decade-specific, they are nonetheless sweet and modern because of their satin sashes.

But if you don’t live in the UK, don’t despair -there are other options. In fact, almost any knee-length, A-line dress can be made more “retro” by the addition of vintage or vintage-reproduction accessories.

Exhibit A:

I Will Follow Her : wedding bridesmaid dress vancouver Johanna
(key accessories shown: flower hat pin and birdcage veil, floral brooch, lace bolero, satin sash, d’Orsay pumps, antique gold necklace, and (not pictured) petticoat)

Notice the use of a bolero (cropped jacket) - it’s a really cute retro look, and great for a bridesmaid (or bride) who loves a strapless neckline but feels uncomfortable about showing her shoulders.

This look is very vintage, but can be easily duplicated - especially with the huge selection of vintage accessories that Ebay has to offer. Other good places to look include flea markets, tag sales, and your grandmother’s attic/basement/creepy storage area under the stairs.

However, if only a true vintage dress will do for your crew, you may proceed with caution to the following section (…but maybe you should dim your screens so your co-workers don’t see)

******FETISH SECTION - RATED V-FOR VINTAGEOUS***********

The following delectable dresses are from the vintage seller Vintageous at http://www.vintageous.com/dressy.htm .

I am just loving all your vintage posts! I love watching Mona Lisa Smile for the costuming and 50’s setting as much as the theme and acting. ;-)

Can you tell I’m an English teacher?

Absolutely lovely!
So tragic that people were so small in the 50’s… everytime I attempt to go vintage shopping, I’m reminded of how big I am. *sigh*
Plus a full size skirt on me would knock over children as I walked down the street. Pooh.

I absolutely love Vintageous and Posh Vintage Girl. I pour over those sites looking at dresses that I would rarely have an occassion to wear. Maybe I could just cook or read in them?

OOo these are so cute!!! My bridesmaid, are wearing tea-length dresses - still vintage but with a modern kick. Oh I wish I met you and your wonderful links 1 year ago :)

I’ve been looking for a little lace bolero like the one pictured FOREVER. If anyone has any tips on finding one, I’d love to hear them!

Love the post.

I love the crinoline look, but with my boxy rib cage and short height, I fear I’d look like a frog in a tutu rather than a swishy vintage icon.

love your posts on 1950s wedding style! I also adore the Elizabeth Taylor “Father of the Bride” movie. Weddings back then had such a sweetness compared to today’s extravaganzas.

Thanks for the great post! There were lots of potential wedding dresses on those links; too bad most of them were sold. Where is the dress from in Exhibit A?

thanks everyone! I’m so glad everyone hearts vintageous dresses as much as I do!

Renee - try “julius bridals’ - they have an online site, and are sold by a seller I can’t remember on ebay…but I am featuring the one I found from them on a later post, so I’ll try to find the link for you!

Nikkita- Exhibit A was a wedding gown from Bridal Wave tv, a website that reviews wedding gowns, amongst other things. I’ll try to find the link for you, but I know it’s in their dresses section!

Any advice for finding bridesmaid dresses in the US that look like those Candy Anthony’s?!?

I would love to find something similar. I was at my grandma’s last night and am now inspired to find this style dress and to have lace shrugs for everyone!

From what I am reading about shrugs/boleros, they are very easy to sew. And, from what I am seeing online, that’s the only way to go! Contemporary shrugs have taken a sharp turn for the worse! Only the Stop Staring dress line has managed to keep the cut perfect.

Those dresses simply Rock - Have just shot another wedding with just another classic Vera Wang dress. I knew of Candy Anthony and the English are the best for creating that special niche market.
