Blobs Of Color

January 24th, 2008 @ 4:11 pm by Mrs. Milkshake

Who says bridesmaids have to be monochromatic blobs of color? Who wants to own a hot pink dress anyway (well, I might, but then that brings us back to the you-feel-that-way-because-you’ve-never-been-a-bridesmaid-before-comment). Not only that, but I feel like 90% of bridesmaids dresses are strapless tube tops (could they not have put any thought into a nice sweetheart neckline at the least?), they’re overly shiny (ugh, cheap taffetta), and somehow they’re three to four hundred dollars! What a money maker.

Hello Macys, where a well constructed, totally rewearable dress can run $50-$200. I think that the following two lines: Maggy London, and London Times, are particularly bridesmaid appropriate and I’m excited to see what they’ll have to offer over the next couple seasons.

So why not do prints? This dress, above, I saw at Macys this summer with a palatable price tag of around $60. Here’s my mod side taking over. Maybe I don’t mean “print” so much as black and white mod graphics. So here’s a few things from macys.com that I gathered up over the summer.

I particularly like 7, but perhaps 8 is more bridesmaidy. I also like 1. I find the texture of 12 to be so enticing. 13 through 15 are available in black although I guess I wish they were just a little longer? Macy’s even has bride-worthy dresses at around the $200 mark:

I think my maid of honor and I have some sort of esp - when she commented about posting more dresses, I had been scouring the dot coms for Macys and Nordstrom! So here’s another batch:

betsy

I like the ’stuff’ on the bottom of #1, just like this Betsey Johnson number above. I like that #2 reminds me of tapestry for some strange reason, and because of the stiff nature of the fabric, it makes me feel somewhat empowered to actual make it myself. I do like #5.

Enter again my love for b&w patterns (#10)! See how it worked for this wedding, perhaps particularly well because the pattern wasn’t overwhelming and didn’t comprise the entire dress; photo above found at kenziekate.com. I like #9 the best - I like that …… folded action on the skirt. If #1 were jersey knit, I think it’s super cute, and #11 is for sure jersey so hooray for t-shirt fabric? #8 looks like it could be ill-fitting like so many things we’ve tried on, and #10? I’m glad to see there is a lot more online eye candy for dresses besides the big M and the big N - see kenziekate’s bridesmaid posts. Photo montages thanks to the folks at Nordstroms.

I tried to get my bridesmaids to get a Maggy London dress since they are cute and pretty well priced, but they were never excited by any of the dresses I sent. In the end, we went with these from Nordstrom:

A little more than I wanted to ask them to spend, but they’re all happy with the dress, so I’m happy.

I love patterned dresses - I was watching that movie, “because I said so”, and they were wearing lots of fantastic patterned dresses for their weddings. loved it!

As a dreader of all things strapless (being short and flat chested with muscular arms) and pink I salute you, sister. I am also a big fan of black and white and love some of these dresses!

Can’t say I agree with your #7 pick though. The neck bow is just too 1980’s office “fashion.” It looks cute on the model, but I think the bridesmaids would end up looking like extras from “Working Girl”, even if they didn’t have big frizzy perms and running shoes on.

i really wanted to go this route with my ‘maids dresses. the problem is that the 5 girls live in 5 different states. and there is a wide variety of body types represented, many of which include well-endowed chests. sadly, the department store route wasn’t going to work.

we just decided on dresses from aria (www.ariadress.com). there are so many styles for the gals to choose from, and they have the plum (aubergine) color i was looking for.

i will definitely consider one of these for an RD dress, though…. great finds!

what a coincidence!! I just put in an order for #3 (from your bridesmaid’s Nordstrom/Macys batch) on Tuesday! Unfortunately they don’t have all the sizes we need, but I’m hoping they are alter-able. I didn’t even run them by all the girls yet, but I ordered 5 of them anyway because I fell in love with them and I didn’t want them to run out of more sizes. I usually am iffy about buying things online without seeing or trying on first, but the great thing with Nordstrom is their awesome return policy. If the girls don’t end up liking them, or they don’t fit, they can easily be returned.

If we don’t end up using them for BM dresses, I’m definitely keeping one for myself!

Miss Milkshake, this is a great post, thank you! I’m definitely leaning towards a more cocktail-type or non-solid colored dress. Not only are they relatively less expensive than traditional BM dresses, they also tend to be something you could wear more than once. Now I guess my only concern is a guest showing up to the wedding in the same dress :)

White House Black Market is a good place to look. That is where we will find my moh’s dress. http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/product.asp?PID=300109530
This is the one I have my eye on.

I love black and white patterns, too. And I think they’d be a very cool, refreshing look for bridesmaids. Can’t wait to see what ya pick. :)
