Ms. Dahlia's Picture
Ms. Dahlia, Detroit/Cleveland Age and Occupation: 24, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, IT System Administrator Engagement Date: December 31, 2006 Wedding Date: May 2008 Blogging Since: September 19, 2007 Venue: United Methodist Cathedral & historic downtown hotel in Cleveland About Me: I enjoy cooking, dancing and swimming. I am a geek and apply game theory to my everyday life. Winter is my favorite time of year, especially when spent curled up with good coffee and a book by Madeleine L'Engle.
About Ms. Dahlia

Having after considering kitchen gear and regular household items, it was time to consider the “fun stuff.”Since before we were officially engaged, Mr. Dahlia has wanted to register at Crate and Barrel. While I like the store quite a bit, Mr. Dahlia really likes it. And after registering at our other places, we had not yet seen everyday place settings (dishes and flatware) that we liked.

After all, our current dishes are a mix of china that Mr. Dahlia got at a huge yard sale for $4 (a real hodgepodge- think 11 plates, 3 bowls, 12 cups and saucers, 7 smaller plates in a really ugly pattern) and a set of dishes my grandmother got on clearance at Marc’s when I was graduating college. Our flatware? A current mix of spoons, knives and forks with fake wood handles and various utensils permanently borrowed from our undergrad dining hall and the various college houses in which we lived.

A not great picture of Mr. Dahlia’s yard sale china from here.

We’ve been thinking that it’s time for a bit of an upgrade. So off to Crate and Barrel we went.

The people at Crate and Barrel were friendly and helpful when we needed help, but for the most part we were left on our own, which works for us. After much debate between us, Mr. Dahlia acquiesced and we did not put square plates on our registry. (Seriously. This was a months-long debate. Mr. Dahlia wanted square, white dishes. While I would have preferred colorful round dishes, I was willing to get white, so long as they were round. Square dinner plates strike me as being a bit too trendy, and as I have mentioned before, once I decide on something, I have it forever.)

Here are the compromise plates:

It was a compromise, and Mr. Dahlia did put a square serving platter or two on the registry:

We also registered for flatware, glasses, and smaller kitchen items, as well as other serving dishes (and an ice bucket! How much easier hosting parties will be!). Overall, we’ve been pretty happy with Crate and Barrel; the online registry is much easier to use than Macy’s or Williams-Sonoma, and the selection is pretty decent.

I am curious, though, to find out if anyone else had a situation similar to our square/round plate debate. What compromises did you make with your partner about what to put on the registry?

(Weekly exercise update: I did at home strength training one day, ran once, and swam once. Not great, but I’ve got great aspirations for this upcoming week- and my pants are starting to fit the tiniest bit looser. How are you doing?)

I will admit that we are reversed. I wanted to square plates and he wanted the round. I decided to agree with him - as it is trendy and we might not want to invest in a set that we hate in 5-10 years. I did however get to scan square appetizer plates and one rectangular platter.

As for the working out — Weight trained once, Spin twice, and played soccer once. Today is an off day - and tomorrow will be more weight training! I want to feel my pants become bigger as well!

Yes! I wanted the white square plates, but he wanted round for the same reason as you. We settled on white round everyday dishes, but I did get to register for square appetizer plates and serving pieces for when we entertain.

There are many debates between the FI and I on the registry. As we’ve lived together already for 2 years, we pretty much have everything and are looking instead to “upgrade.” However, our kitchen is small with barely any shelf space, so the kitchen aid mixer, ice cream maker, and waffle iron I want are not items the FI thinks are “essential”.

We compromised, and oh baby I got the Kitchen Aid mixer to stay!

Yay! Those are our dishes, too!

Since, we, too, have a lot of the basic essentials already, we registered for some china and some kitchenware “upgrades” — but we also added some really fun items, and this is where he made his preferences known — including a travel-sized gas grill (Target) and a vodka set (C&B).

Ooh ooh!! I have the Aspen set too! I LOVE them. We opted for the cereal bowl set with the tall mug - as we’re coffee drinkers. They are fabulous and after almost a year of having them, none of them have broken. They’re so versatile and classic/modern.

We didn’t really have any big debates, although we could not for the life of us find everyday dishes — picking out the expensive china was no issue, but I hated everything inexpensive that I found. It’s all either all-white (no offense, but I loathe all-white dishes for my own kitchen) or country themed. We finally found an acceptable pattern on incredible clearance at Mikasa — I think we got a service for 16, plus serving platters and bowls, for under $300 — WHAT a steal. This way, when I get sick of then in 5 years and throw them away, I won’t feel guilty.

I had a cold, and then a migraine, so my workouts have been non-existent. However, with the migraine, I couldn’t keep food down for 3.5 days, so surely I dropped a pound or three that way — I haven’t stepped on the scale yet to know.

We had the same problem when we bought a condo together this summer, 2 months before we were engaged. We didn’t really have plates from our other apartments…so he wanted white square and i didn’t. we wound up with a 12 piece place setting from linens and things for 40 bucks that my parents bought us…and it is white, round plates with a raised detail along the lip of the plate…and we love it.

We have the plain white round Crate and Barrel plates too! I love them. They hold up really well. I’ve had mine for 15 years.

And Mr. Dahlia, I also recently got some SQUARE salad/appetizer plates to go with, cuz I too got bitten by the fad. But I bought them super cheap through a friend in the restaurant business, so I’m trendy– but frugal.

Wine glasses — FI wanted very traditional shapes and sizes, and I wanted a more modern, clean look (more of a cylinder, flat bottomed glass with stem). We decided to register for traditional wine glasses in crystal for dinner parties/holidays/etc. and more contemporary wine glasses for everyday. Makes us both happy :o)

We have the white plates with the blue rims from C&B as our every day plates. We did register for and receive the large square platter as well as two rectangular ones. They are very, very pretty and always look nice on our table. I think you went the right route…having classic, simple dishes means you can change your other things (napkins, chargers, etc.) much more frequently.

We registered for the Aspen too! Is your flatware the Grand Hotel? Our registering experience was much easier than I expected, but we’d done a lot of research online first which helped a LOT!

No real help on the plates — we registered for Denby, and Denby only. Everyday + fancy, all in one …. and if we ever need fancier, I’ll thrift-store/resale-store hunt till I find a set I love. And if we ever need more casual, well, *that* I can afford on my own. :)

And might I also add that I LOVE that you linked to Marcs. Best. Store. Ever.

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one with Marc’s love. :)

Annie, for flatware, we registered for Stanton Mirror.
