Sorry, Still Obsessed With Christmas…

January 24th, 2008 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Penguin

In my defense, I posted this on my personal blog, but Bee suggested I post it to Weddingbee…I LOVE CHRISTMAS, Okay?   Sometime in mid-April I should be getting over it.

Mr. Penguin and I started a tradition about four years ago where we would give each other an ornament for Christmas that represented a significant event in the past year. This year, the gift was pretty special, since we didn’t plan on getting each other much of anything else, since the wedding is fast approaching and could be better spent elsewhere. We’ve done a pretty good job at covering the range of “significant events” with our ornaments…one year I received a glass replica of the Pantheon, marking our trip to Italy, another year, I gave Mr. Penguin a little glass orb with a tiny house in the snow, representing buying our first home. Every year we mark and date each ornament with the year and what the ornament represents.

The best part about exchanging “significant” ornaments is that every December we get to unwrap the ornaments over and over, and relive the great experiences that we’ve shared together over the years. We’ve never gotten each other “similar” ornaments until this year, however.

Mr. Penguin got me this:

And I got him this:

Handmade Penguin from LaurenAlane.com … check out her shop, she makes lots of other adorable little handmade birds!

Have you started any traditions (Christmas or otherwise) with your Fiance/Husband?

What a wonderful tradition! I appreciate any means of capturing memories (I recently came to a realization that I write and take pictures primarily for that reason)…but I never would have thought of ornaments as a way to do so! I might have to suggest something similar to my FI before next Christmas…it could be a new tradition for our married life! :)

Oh, I was so enamored with your tradition that I totally ignored your question! One of my favorite traditions with FI is our annual holiday dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Nacional 27. He always gets a generous amount of Lettuce Entertain You gift certificates from his boss for Christmas, and Nacional is a Lettuce restaurant, so we always use the gift certificates to have our special holiday dinner right before we go home for Christmas, and then there’s usually enough left over to cover a good bit of our Valentine’s Day dinner at the same place! Yum.

I can be kind of a Scrooge around Xmas time, but I do LOVE decorating the tree and we too always buy an a new ornament every year– usually from somewhere we’ve traveled or that we found unexpectedly while on a “date day.”

Our Thanksgiving tradition started quite randomly the first year we were together when neither of us was going home. I went to his apartment to cook and he put on “Mondo Exotica,” a compilation from the Ultra Lounge series.

With its island rhythms and retro bachelor pad sound it’s more Polynesian luau than Pilgrim feast, but somehow we just kept letting it loop all afternoon.

So, it became the soundtrack to our Thanksgivings from there forward. This year, I while I was preparing our Quorn faux-turkey (SO much better than Tofurky!) and Mr. Beanchar was looking for the CD, we have NPR the radio. And on comes a story about a guy having friends over for a “Tiki Thanksgiving” and in the background is…… the first song off Mondo Exotica.

i love this idea so much - it’s inexpensive, thoughtful and something that can be remembered and experienced with each passing year.

i may steal the idea! :)

I love this tradition for all of the same reasons! It is actually a tradition my parents have done with my sisters and I since we were born, and it really makes it fun to remember the past when you see the ornaments. I am excited to continue the tradition with my fiancé and future children!

I started an ornament giving tradition with my fiance too. So far I’ve been giving photo ornaments (his graduation, our engagement portrait). He gives me kitties since I’m his Kate Cat.

I’m a person that really searches for the “perfect” card for each occasion. This Christmas, my husband suggested that we keep all of the cards that we give eachother for every holiday/birthday and re-read them over the years.

Too cute! I want to steal this idea too…maybe when I get married. =D

I like davis2b’s husband’s suggestion too! The first and only Xmas card I got from my bf, he just signed it “Love, [bf's name]“. That’s it! No writing. It was a pretty perfect card though..I have to admit.

What a great idea. Mr. Lovebug loves Christmas, too, so this is something he could totally get into. Love it. :)
