About Mrs. Lily

Calling all New York Brides!  My very best friend in the whole world got engaged this past weekend (yay!) and needs your advice. She and her fiance want to get married in May or June — they are planning to take a year off from their lives and travel around the world (so brave, I only wish I had the nerve). They are very excited to tie the knot and want to do it before they leave… but planning a wedding in 5 months has her nerves in a twist. She went looking for places this weekend that could hold her ceremony and reception on such short notice. So far, no luck.

This is where you, the lovely, amazing, readers of Weddingbee come in. Can you guys suggest some places in Brooklyn or Manhattan for her to look? She wants a wedding for 125ish people, pretty, not crazy flashy. She has looked at places like the Foundry and a loft space like where Mrs. Bee had her wedding, but so far no luck in terms of free dates. Any suggestions will be soooooooo appreciated!!!  Merci!

I was going to recommend the Foundry too. I also know friends of friends who got married at the Tobacco Warehouse right under the Brooklyn Bridge and the pics were gorgeous! http://www.bbpc.net/index.cfm?objectId=EE4A09FF-3048-7098-AF68206736A9D609

This is a really comprehensive listing of locations. http://nymag.com/weddings/listings/locations/

I wish your friend luck because finding a reception location in NYC with 5 months notice is going to be really hard…

If she is willing to go to Jersey City she should try the Liberty House. Two weeks or so ago, they had two Sunday afternoons in June open. Hope this helps!

I don’t know of any venues, but she should check out this blog about another couple traveling for a year as their honeymoon - oneyearonearth.com.

Check out the Highline Ballroom in the Meatpacking District. Especially for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, she might be able to get a great deal on this music venue.

She can try the Glazier Group, who owns Bridgewaters and Twenty-Four Fifth. There’s also some of the “clubs” - ie. Yale Club, University Club, 3 West Club (which was Mrs. Snow Pea’s location I believe). Maybe also have her post on the local knot board; they always have some good ideas.

I think the nightclub Marquee does weddings on Sat & Sun afternoons. A friend of mine is a party planner out on Long Island & she told me that its definitely worth checking out. Another good place to look into is Tribeca Rooftop (very loft-like). Also you should look into restaurants in NYC. I went to a party at Frederick’s (above Barneys). My sister did a restaurant wedding in NYC & it was gorgeous. Good luck!

a friend of mine just went to look at Pochron Studios in DUMBO (Brooklyn). I don’t think it’s super well known yet, and I know my friend’s specs are about the same as yours. Maybe that would work out?

Oh, and I think The Players lets non-members have weddings there too! It definitely has a funky vintage brownstone kind of feel.

There is a publication called something like Wedding Sites and Services. It has a TON of wedding locations and all the important info right there - # of people it can hold, # of weddings at a time, costs, etc. Super helpful. I highly recommend that your friend head right to Barnes & Noble and track one down.

You guys are AWESOME! I can’t thank you enough. My friend is totally overwhelmed right now (um, sure y’all can relate) and just wants to get a date so she can breathe a bit. I know these ideas will be a big help. If anyone else has more, please do share! THANK YOU!!!!

If she is willing to go outside of NYC, about 30-45 min north there are a ton of beautiful country clubs up there. The VIP Club, Surf Club, Glen Isle Country Club to name a few.

Someone else mentioned the Wedding Sites and Services magazine…they have a website too that is pretty good. http://www.weddingsitesandservices.com/

Try Alger House. http://www.greenmansionscatering.com/

I think it fits only 100 max tho…

Try the Seaman’s Institute at the South Street Seaport (although I don’t think they can accommodate dancing with a sit-down dinner), the Puck Building (owned by NYU) or a museum - there was an aquarium I think in Canarsie that I would have adored had my dad’s dislike of all things fish gotten in the way. :) Abigail K also owns/operates a lot of wedding venue sites.

A lot of these wil be full, I think, unless she gets lucky.

How about Arthur’s Landing in Weehawken, NJ? http://www.arthurslanding.com/
A ferry goes right there from Manhattan.

Also New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park, though it might be too small:www.nyrp.org/cafe/

The River Room of Harlem:

Bean you just read our minds — she was calling them right now because they seem to have a date available. I hope it really isn’t too small!

Some restaurants offer a really unique and beautiful backdrop. Try Public in Nolita.

Try the Upper Crust! It holds 80 people for sit down and 120 for a “supper buffet”. They do are right around the corner from Banchet flowers, so they are used to coordinating weddings with them. And i think they are best at planning wedding on short-ish notice. They were AMAZED that I wanted to plan my wedding a year in advance :)
