Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boobs!

cinderella
(Somehow I doubt Cinderella had this problem . . .)

I love my dress. I love, love, love it. It’s got a light romantic feel to it, but it also has a bit of va va va voom to it to which is something I have to admit I really wanted. I mean, I’m only young and nubile once, right? I might as well show it off while I can.

Anyway, speaking of being young and nubile, I have a slightly related issue in that, while I love, love, love my dress, it’s got a bit of a tricky cut to it with a deep v in the front, little v cuts at the arms and an even deeper v in the back.

dresstop

Unfortunately, because of this tricky cut, I’m not really able to slap on a good ol’ Victoria Secret underwire and call it a day. This calls for some slightly more elaborate undergarmenting. This calls for forethought. This calls for reinforcements, so I’m opening this one up to The Hive.

Since we’re having mostly family at our wedding, I don’t want to go braless for fear of a major wardrobe malfunction in which I could either pop out or get very, very cold in front of Mr. Hummingbird’s granny, so I’m wondering - what kind of undergarment can you wear with what is essentially a backless dress? Stick ’ems? Pasties? Strategically layered Post-its? Duct tape?

If you’ve tried it and it worked, please let me know as we’re going to start construction on my dress soon (my first fitting is on February 10) and I’ll need all the support I can get!

who designed your dress? I would call their flagship store and ask for recs. Also, maybe your bridal shop. You could always do pasties!

How about those silicone petal things. I got a pair from the Gap and they’re great with deep-V dresses http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=34528&pid=426964

I’d get cups sewn in, and use fashion tape.

Given the cut of the dress, and the fabric, anything more substantial than that looks like it would show through the dress.

Do you need ’support’ or do you just want to avoid the wardrobe malfunction??

‘Petals’ will work to hide the radar. Not sure they’re real name or anything - but they are shaped like a little flower and cover your nipple.

I use ‘dress tape’ (Or sometimes just double sided tape) to make sure clothes stay covering my boobs. (this is in addition to the bra) My mom gave it to me for Christmas one year - so not sure where to buy it.

I feel like the ’sticker bras’ often leave you with misshaped boobs (Cones) - so I’m not sure if that will work. You may have to practice with them.

What size are we supporting here - that may make a difference. With a 34D - my options are limited!! And results may be different :)

My ideas…
1. get cups sewn in
2. depending on your size go with the nu-bra (the silicone one, it stays better, check nordstrom, at least you can return it there)
3. just just dress tape to make sure it stays in place

My offer for pastey’s still stands if you want them! =)

I’m a former-pageant girl, and in my experience, the best things are the stick on cups from Fredricks of Hollywoods (Victoria’s Secret sometimes carries them, too). They stick to the “girls” with their own adhesive, keep them covered with flesh toned material, and keep everything perky.

Natakie16 says:

Yes, definitely NuBra, or the Gap used to make them as well, not sure if they still do- however, if you have sensitive skin, this might irritate you if you leave them on all day.

Also, if you want to go with sewn in cups, then I would also use Hollywood tape. I think it’s sold in Bed Bath and Beyond, probably elsewhere, also on QVC. It also might be irritating, but it does work!

check out macys (or browse macys.com). i heard they have a special bra for dresses like this.

These Hollywood Fashion Tape Cover Ups (http://www.hollywoodfashiontape.com/products_cover_ups.cfm ) are AMAZING. I cannot stress how much I love them and how well they worked for me!

Liftits are good so the girls don’t look downtrodden and strategically placed toupee tape..much stronger than the garment tape.

I had the same problem…my dress was a low-cut halter. Victoria’s Secret does have a bra that might work: the ultra-low u-bra. (You can find it back where the silicon inserts are..and other support garments.) The front dips down about 3-4″ below the bottom of th breasts, but still provides good support. It’s also narrow on the side, so it shouldn’t show. Adjustable straps make it a racer-back, standard or halter bra; it can’t be strapless.

It worked beautifully with my dress. You can get little inserts, too: I was very very va-va-voom, which I loved.

I like how you said ” Since we’re having mostly family at our wedding, I don’t want to go braless”…like perhaps if you guest list was friends and not family, you’d not fear a waredrobe malfunction! Made me chuckle!

tanya2s says:

I like the NuBra Featherlite a lot– it’s lightweight and provides just enough support to make things work. However, even it might be too big to not show under your dress. Fashion tape would probably work best, especially since it’s essentially clear or nude.

Or those Liftits above look awesome. Give it a shot!

Love, love, love the dress you picked— prob b/c it reminds me of the original style I wanted for the one I had made! A switched out my design b/c I was going to wear a Nicole Miller I own with the same waist/neckline for the rehearsal dinner (though I didn’t in the end.)

One idea my seamtress had to address the low cut was to have some very sheer chiffon or organza across the lowest point of the V in front and sides, so as to preseve the sexy while containing the titty(s). She was going to continue the sheer around the back to two soft “drapes” flowing down the back of the dress to give it a little “movement.” (We did actually incorporate this element, if you remember from my pics.)

Since you and I and bluebear have already exhuastively discussed stick-ons ;), I would just add my voice to the chorus of whatever you pick should be soft so you won’t see outlines.

Can’t wait to see pics as your dress comes to life!

My dress was very similar and I had mine sown in. I’m also a solid A cup so, you know, I didn’t have to worry about much falling out ;) But the cups were padded so I look almost like a B!

Here’s a pic of me in my dress with the sewn in cups for reference: http://bp1.blogger.com/_tSbdWyQa1mM/R2GV_Rg9TbI/AAAAAAAAAsk/XnPy7sD9iqE/s1600-h/Wedding+092.jpg

i send the nubra. it works wonders. and for those of us that need a little bit of help, it adds just enough!

I feel your pain - I have a very low back dress and I wear a C-cup. I looked all over and ended up getting this: http://www.flattering.com/pricelist_fm.html#

Not sure if that meets your needs, but it seems to work very well for my dress, which has a significant v-neck and low, low back.

Hey ladies!
Jen - I am actually having my dress made by my friend Allison.
Jenniferb - It is totally true. I think boobs are somewhat old hat to our friends who have slight exhibitionist tendencies, so if it was just them, I wouldn’t worry so much, but the idea of our elderly relatives seeing my erect nipples when it gets chilly kind of freaks me out.
Bluebear/Beanchar - You pose a good point about the draping . . . but if all else fails, I’ll contact the two of you to send me some boobtastic contraband up here in Canada.
And for the record, I am a 34B. :)

peakay says:

At Shopper’s Drug Mart they have “petals” that you just stick to your nipples (ew, I hate typing that word!)…It’s soft and fabric-y. Tried, tested and true. Cheap. I used them when I went braless with a silk dress…A-OK.

sillyinphilly says:

my dress has a similar shape - low v-neck front, very low v back. my seamstress is sewing bra cups in, and if need be, i’ll use dress tape to keep things in place. but, i am a card carrying member of the itty bitty titty committee, so i wasn’t as worried about needing as much extra support. i do love the fact that i wont have to worry about underwire or corsets squeezing my ribcage the whole day. my dress is actually comfortable! it seems like yours will be, too. yay!

these victoria’s secret silicone thingies are FABULOUS. i would never believe that something like these would work, but they are freaking amazing.
http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/application/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=3H-201659&page=1&cgname=OSBRPSHAZZZ&rfnbr=3353

they definitely will cover a nipple erection, and give some shaping as well. i wore them for my wedding and they were great. comfortable the whole time (i completely forgot i had them on) and looked great. they’re a little pricey, but totally worth it.

There is something called “Nippies” which are basically pasties. THere are bridal ones.. the website makes me giggle though.

Miss Lovebug says:

I’m not the person to advise on your bridal breasts. I’m having enough trouble with my own. I just want to say that I can’t wait to see your dress.

27.
Trisha says:

I bought some pasties at Dilliards about 6 months ago. They are similar to the normal petals except they are silicone and provide more of a shield compared to the band-aid like coverage. The girls couldn’t poke through in an Alaskan blizzard. Those and dress tape worked for me in my last (super low-cut, & thin) bridesmaid dress. Oh, and they are reusable and come in a case.

28.
staceyb says:

i just had an issue with a strapless dress staying up… i went to my local target, and they have a wide range of sticky options - petals, tape, and stick on cups, all under $10. might be worth a shot! my own warning… get someone to help you stick everything to yourself. i tried to do it myself and it was hard and frustrating!

29.
mamamiya says:

get some cups sewn in.

mamamiya says:

the silicon petals from gap are on sale right now for $10.00! But they are a final sale.
