To Kill A Mockingbird

January 29th, 2008 @ 4:34 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

I received a very exciting email last week from Viola, announcing the official launch of Chewing the Cud. As soon as I got the email… I hurried to see what goods she had. An awesome designer, Viola offers a wide range of services from designs to invitations.

I personally fell in love with Viola’s own stationery for her wedding which took place last fall. Here’s the oh-so perfect introduction from her site “Viola loves books. Phillip loves movies. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was their favourite story of all time and became the inspiration for the wedding. From child-like bird illustrations to references in book forms and movie elements, the entire event was designed to bring to life this sweet coming-of-age story. “

The details of this wedding are spectacular; from the table numbers to the bridesmaid bouquets, every little detail is as important as the event itself. I love a bird theme, but this wedding is top notch.

I think my favorite things would be the bouquets and the ring bearer “pillow”. How ingenious, to use a book holding flowers for the bouquets. Oh and the ribbon for the ring bearer pillow reminds me of schoolbooks from the olden days. So appropriate and so unique.

I love it when brides step out of the box - hurray!!!  Check out her site for more ideas…. but I must admit this wedding theme is hard to beat.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that while the details of this wedding are lovely, basing your wedding theme on a book that delves into racism of the most insidious kind, incest, justice gone wrong, attacks on defenseless children and really bad parenting (poor Boo Radley) would leave me with a rather unsettled feeling at the wedding. I love and adore this book and I’ve read it countless times. It’s one of the reasons I went to law school and the movie is one of those rare movies that actually lives up to the book. But do you really want to be seated at Mr. Ewell’s table?

Well, to be honest… Ive never read the book nor have I seen a movie. (Maybe I have in school but dont remember - sorry :()

I think my post was more about highlighting all the little details the bride and groom took into consideration. Regardless of the story…a book lover having a bookish theme would love the details of incorportating the book itself in the bouquet, venue decor….etc. i think that was more my post.

Regardless… i think they did a wonderful job!!!

WHAT?!!! To Kill a Mockingbird was the theme of her wedding?!?!?!! That is the weirdest theme I’ve ever heard of, but now it’s opening up my mind to all new possibilities.. Silence of the Lambs.. The Stand by Stephen King..

I don’t see any little kids dressed up as Hams. It looks more like birds was her theme.

Love it! So many details and done in such a unique way! I think the point was they used TKAMB as inspiration for their books & birds theme which they carried through beautifully (obviously not a literal translation of the theme of the book). Hopefully it will inspire us to think outside the box! Great post:)

Thanks jfs…I was starting to think that I was weird finding the details of this wedding beautiful.

You are right, its more about the book and birds, rather than the story itself….

Wow, some people just can’t think outside of their own sphere of what’s acceptable sometimes! It was a well thought out, well executed reception. Endofstory. I’m a 9th grade English teacher and I’ve taught that book in 7 sections of English for 5 years…so basically 35 times. I know it inside and out, and while I agree that the themes are harsh, the overall message of the text, which is literally don’t judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes (spoken by Atticus Finch), is actually poignant and beautiful. The rest of it -be it the raising of Boo Radley, the injustices faced by Tom Robinson, or the absurdity of the town’s initial views on race relations - is all a parallel plot line to deliver the reader that specific message through a young child’s coming of age.

Viola’s theme is obviously not just birds and books, as evidenced by the photo of the box which contains all of the items that Boo left in the tree for Scout and Jem, among other things which are indicative of TKAM directly that I saw in Viola’s blog.

It’s ironic that one, who was so inspired by a book, so as to attend law school because of it, would still be so closed-minded about others’ ideas and tastes…

This is incredible and the first comment just needs to look at it as her personal vision not an excerpt of educating the world. if you want to make a change, go ahead, state a point and look up the NY Times blog, Vote 2008, . This is a wedding blog, light andprotest, help charities. This blog is fresh and inspiring and it’s direction not humiliation, judgement and ridicule on one’s most memorable days. Lighten up.

Thank you guys for your kind words. TKAM was our inspiration but we never meant to re-anact the story. What we loved most about the story was how it was written through the eyes of a 7-year-old, wide-eyed child. So even though we took visual elements from TKAM, (the book forms, the birds, child-like illustrations etc.) really our wedding was about discovery, simplicity and the beautiful memories. Thanks for posting Miss Flamingo!
