About Mrs. Chickadee

Wedding Procrastinator Extraordinaire

January 29th, 2008 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Chickadee

Hi, my name’s Miss Chickadee and I’m a wedding procrastinator.

I’m proud to announce that it’s been almost an entire week and a half since my first (and hopefully last) major wedding breakdown, which was followed almost immediately by a wedding intervention courtesy of Big Sis & Mama Chickadee. Needless to say, it was an intervention worthy of Dr. Phil himself, complete with motivational speeches, list-making, and more than a few tears.

The good news is, I am a reformed Chickadee and the proud possessor of 100 COMPLETELY FINISHED Save the Dates. I also managed to check many many other things off my to-do list… including a few toughies like choosing a veil, shoes, and bridesmaid dresses!

Today though, is going to be completely devoted to my Save the Dates. I know what you may be thinking, though, “didn’t we already get a post about this?” Um, yes. Good memory. You’re right, I did already write about them… but they’ve changed. What can I say, it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind.

Sure, I had to learn the hard way that I just don’t like the way my gocco prints, or that the swirly patterned vellum that looked alright in the tray at Hobby Lobby is just not my thing, or that it actually takes way more adhesive than you could ever estimate, but in the end (with a little help from Paper Source and a lot of help from Mr. Chickadee) I finally have STDs that I LOVE.

The supplies:
#10 Open End Envelopes in Curry from Paper-Source.

#10 Flat Cards in Black.

Tons of yellow ribbon from Hobby Lobby.

These magical adhesive mounting squares.

A reliable paper cutter (best paired with a very methodical fiance).

A nearby Office Max/Kinko’s/copy shop to print for you.

The Process:
1. Work up your design in your favorite layout program. If you have InDesign or QuarkXpress, that’s awesome, but you can do it just as well in Publisher or something similar. I used a combination of the fonts Scriptina and Orlando for our design.

2. If necessary, take Miss Flamingo’s advice and turn your design into a Vector image.

3. Turn your design into a PDF and head over to your print shop of choice. A tip for all those black and white brides out there….if you’re just doing a basic black text on white paper, ask for it to be printed with the color printer, not the b&w printer at a place like Kinko’s. It’ll cost you a little extra but it’ll be higher quality!

4. Time to get cutting. This is my least favorite part, as I always manage to miscalculate EVERYTHING. This might be a good time to call your hubby-to-be in for some couples crafting super bonding time.

5. Stick all your layers together. I really recommend these nifty little mounting squares. They don’t leave a mess, are easy to apply, and keep all your pieces smooth.

6. Ta da! You’re done!

Having the Save the Dates done is a HUGE weight off my shoulders. What was the task you found yourself procrastinating the most? Any tips for staying motivated with the wedding planning?

They are so so gorgeous and chic– totally worth the effort. Your guests are going to love receiving these! And I totally feel you on the bridal breakdown– I seem to have one every couple months and they’re never fun (for me or Mr. Jasmine!).

Those are so great! I love that you’re a black & white bride too! I’m in love with the damask pattern and am trying to find a way to incorporate it into our wedding as well. I love the pop of yellow too!

Good Job Chickadee! I’m doing similar ones for my rehearsal dinner - can you tell me what size you cut the white paper too?
TIA!

Beautiful save-the-dates! Stunning, actually!

I’m a Memorial Day weekend bride, and I’ve been procrastinating left and right! Half of my save-the-dates finally got out on Friday, after a bit of a label snafu! I still have half more to address! Pah!

I’ve been dragging my feet on everything: florist, band, invitations…

Amazingly, something is working in my favor, because in the end I think it’s all going to work out beautifully with AVAILABLE vendors that I like!

It’s been helpful for me to voice what I can do well and what I know I’m not going to do well, so that others in my life can step in and either take the task themselves or ask me frequently enough that eventually it gets done.

Teamwork on DIY projects is essential! I know my save-the-dates couldn’t have gotten done without my sister, Jesse, and I all circled around her dining room table at Christmas in assembly-line fashion!

And channeling the stress into productivity, as easy as that sounds but hard to DO, also makes for flying through the checklists!

Good luck, all you Bees! It helped me to read Miss Lovebug’s post about our wedding day being like. .008% of our lives! Everything’s going to be lovely for each of your weddings.

Welcome back, Chickie! You were missed.

Glad the intervention worked before you were spotted wandering Petco in ripped black fishnets and a greasy T-shirt!

LOVE them. And may I just say that I heart your color scheme? You would not believe how often I’m looking for wedding stuff and I see something that would go perfect with YOUR wedding. Then I think, “why isn’t it MY wedding?” and everything spirals out of control. But congrats on getting them done. :)

E - Mr. Chickadee cut the paper to 9 x 3 5/8, which I *think* should basically be 1/4″ less than the cards’ dimensions. So it left .125″ margin of black showing.

fmcin2008 - I just googled until a found an image I liked, then too it into Vector Magic to turn it into a vector image I could blow up and put on the edge.

i love your save the dates!!! i found the same damask pattern on shutterstock.com but they wanted $250 to register for their site to download the image?!? yikes!! i know nothing about vector magic, so any ideas/suggestions on how to use this specific damask pattern without having the gray copyright symbol in the background would be greatly appreciated!!!
