My Bling… Oops I Mean My Ring

January 30th, 2008 @ 5:17 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

I heart being different, original and I love making a statement. So obviously my bling… oops… I mean my wedding ring is no exception to this rule.  Just looking back at what type of engagement ring I got from Mr.Flamingo, you can see that I’m no ordinary gal. I heart big rings, or should I say huge rings, so when it came time to choose what type of wedding ring I wanted, I didn’t look in the traditional wedding band section (not that there’s anything wrong with that…. but I knew I needed something more - something along the lines of a right hand ring.)

Right hand rings from A diamond is forever

A right hand ring, if you haven’t heard of the term already, is basically a diamond ring which women buy for themselves. Each design is meant to be expressive of the strength, success and freedom of the wearer.

Right hand rings from A diamond is forever

Basically, the message is that diamond rings are no longer reserved for just the married and engaged ladies. Now my reasoning behind checking out these styles, is not about the independence aspect (because we all know I am getting married) but rather that the designs are simply stunning…. and that’s what I want!!!

Three stone rings from A diamond is forever

I must admit that of all the wedding rings, the model I love the most is a three stone ring. I love the whole idea of the past, present and future…. so perfect for a wedding ring. But these rings from A diamond is forever are very extravagant - not the typical three stone rings we see at the jewelry store.

When we got engaged, the first thing I starting looking for was my wedding ring. I searched an endless amount of hours on the net to find the ONE. Mission - accomplished. Unfortunately, my image bank at the beginning of my planning lacks all the sources, and I’m no superwoman, so I can’t seem to remember where I found it.

I present you… The ONE. I love love love this style - vintage like, three stoned and stunning. The perfect ring (for me that is.)

I decided to get my ring made. This ring will be the base of the design but there’s something extra special about the ring - which is why I am getting it made. My step-mother offered me a ring which she no longer uses and is sleeping in her jewelry box. The model of the ring is not something I would wear, but there are 25 miniature diamonds on that ring, and when I suggested using those diamonds on my ring, she was touched.

I love the idea of something old/vintage incorporated in my ring, and it would be an honor for me to wear it! As for the three stones…. after watching Blood Diamond, I must admit I have been more reluctant to purchase diamonds. At the same time, I love the idea of having an eco-friendly stone, so Moissanite seemed the perfect alternative for me.

Moissanite is a stone which has the same characteristics as a diamond. Same brilliance, same clarity… you can say it’s almost a diamond. What’s great about Moissanite is that it is less expensive then actual diamonds. To give you an idea, if my ring were made of all diamonds, it would cost at least $12,000 (and obviously I can’t afford that). Having my ring made using moissanite, it costs under $2000 - that’s a $10,000 difference!

If ever I were to change my mind, I could always replace my moissanite stones with diamonds. This weekend, I’m going to see the jeweler to get going on my ring. I am anxious to see how things will go.

Anyone else get their wedding ring made or opted for a different style of ring?
And has anyone used Moissanite rather than diamonds?

I opted for just a simple diamond band. I didn’t want a typical engagement ring. I just wanted a vintage or different-looking small diamond band.

i opted for a non-traditional wedding ring too. instead of just adding to my e-ring, i wanted something that expresses me and would look great by itself. at first i wondered if i’d regret not having a traditional ring that i’d be able to wear for years and not have it go “out of style” but i’ve noticed a lot of older women (my mom included) don’t wear their original wedding rings anyway. i decided on a tiara ring in rose gold from karen karch and i can’t wait to wear it!

if others have pictures of their custom rings, i’d love the see them. that would be a fun post — a readers custom wedding ring feature — i think i’ll mention it to bee.

anyway — i’m in your boat flamingo. we seem to have similar tastes on lots of things. i also had my wedding ring custom made and am thrilled it did. it works so well on it’s own and really looks like it was made for my e-ring (which in fact it was). check out my design story here: http://tinyurl.com/2l9t7z

I feel strongly about blood diamonds and the whole idea of it all. IMHO, if you DONT want to wear or “are reluctant” to buy diamonds for fear that they may be blood diamonds, then I’d suggest trying different stones all together(i.e. sapphire–which are gorgeous, too) instead of phony diamonds which still endorse the desire to buy the real thing.

Sorry, my BF just read my comment and thought I was being too political (as usual, LOL). Anyway, to be fair I know that all diamonds are not blood diamonds. In fact, my sister is looking into the background of her diamond engagement ring and it has not been too difficult so far. I’m proud of her…but sorry, folks, for getting carried away

and, honestly, a moisanite is still way better than purchasing a true blood diamond.

I have a moissanite and it’s a nice, affordable alternative. I *think* it passes although I don’t necessarily try to pass it as a diamond. If people ask, I’m honest.

I may also replace mine with a vintage diamond eventually but for now I am SO glad that we saved the money!!

I have a 3 stone moissanite engagement ring, and I’m getting a moissanite & aquamarine band custom made by Bella Jewelry.

It was much more important to me that my fiance not go into debt when we got engaged, so I had asked all along for moissanite (I’m a materials engineer, so I know too much about diamonds and moissanite is very geeky!!).

I get comments on my ring all the time (it actually sparkles more than diamond because it can reflect more colors in the spectrum) and I’m honest about what it is because again - its geeky.

A lot of my girlfriends have moissanite rings now as well - but some people still have reservations getting away from diamonds. It really just depends on what you want and whats most important….

Thank you Erika… ive been searching endlessly for the name of the maker… now I marked it in my faves!!!

I really like the alternatives to diamonds and to be honest, I wont lie about it if someone asks. When I told my family I was going for Moissanite (well more my sisters) they made a face. My response was ‘its my ring, my wedding i do what I want’

I cant wait to go to the jeweler…. Ill keep you all posted on that!!!

We had a ring made by Todd Reed… I think his stuff is SO gorgeous and totally unique. He uses raw diamonds as well as cut diamonds, all the stones are conflict-free, and he also uses recycled gold. I don’t have it yet, but I think it’s on its way to Mr.GV! Woo hoo!!! (I’m out of town for two weeks, so at least there’s a little element of surprise. I’ll try to remember to post a picture when I get it! It’s an eternity band of different raw diamonds (various shades) in a sort of matte yellow gold, with one princess cut diamond. We’re going on a trip together for work in two weeks (and over V-Day), but I hope he doesn’t wait that long… Ohhhh I can’t wait to wear it!!

A friend has a moissanite engagement ring and it’s gorgeous. Great choice for a wedding ring, and even greater choice to have moissanite in it! I think I’m going to do the same (I have a sapphire for my e-ring.)..I didn’t want a diamond.)

I have diamonds, not moissanite, but my fiance had my ring made for me, and we are having our bands made as well. He felt that buying from a chain/ mall jewellry store would give me the same ring everyone else has. I love my ring - it’s got 3 diamonds held by bars not prongs (although it’s not a true tension setting because they are held around the bottom as well), and then 4 small diamonds down each side. It’s white gold and fades into yellow gold along the bottom (which sounds weird, I know, but it’s beautiful).
We are getting the bands made because again, we don’t want to have the same set as everyone else - I’ve got a one of a kind engagement ring, and I want a one of a kind wedding band

yay!!! i have a moissanite engagement ring! Antique style, millgrain detailing AND filligree! He got it from Joy Jewelers online and he was thrilled with the turnaround and service.

i love my ring!!! it sparkles like mad and everyone oooos and ahhhhs!

my FI is a material chemist so moissanite really appealed to his material side, and it appealed to my unique and different side. and it was very affordable!!!!

i have been pondering as of my wedding bad, funny, i hadn’t considered to have it made, and i dont know why since i can’t find anything that i like out there…..

Thanks for the tip!

My ring is moissanite, and I love it. I don’t describe it as an “almost diamond” - I say it is pretty, shiny, less expensive, and very good for karma.

Very nice site! While I’m not getting married right now, I did just buy my mom a pair of moissanite earrings and I intend to buy my own pair very soon. I’ve done some research and really love this jewel! It’s not a phony diamond, it’s silicon carbide, and was discovered in the 1890s by a chemist in a meteor crater. It only occurs in trace amounts naturally, so a company creates it in a larger size to make it into a jewel. It has a similar look to a diamond because it’s nearly colorless, but it has much more fire than diamond, and as others have said, its a fraction of the price! I love my mom’s earrings (I’ve borrowed them)–they’re sparkly and also high quality. Plus moissanite’s getting really popular. Did you know Keira Knightley wore moissanite earrings in Vogue a couple months ago? Love it!!

I’m in the midst of searching for a unique wedding band right now…but I doubt we can afford custom work. However, it’s really helpful to see what other online jewelers people have used! Will you switch your engagement ring to your right hand after your wedding?

My bf and I are looking around for rings now and although I have had a lifetime of priming to expect a diamond for my engagement ring, I find myself seriously thinking about moissanite. It’s a beautiful stone and the only negative thing I could think of was that it had a faint yellowish color when sat next to a colorless stone (but how often will that happen on your ring finger right?). Also it is SO much cheaper and now that I’ve gone back to school and money is tight, a cheaper ring would mean more money towards the wedding etc which is great! So now my only problem is this:
I would have NO problem with a moissanite ring at all but I don’t feel I can tell my family & friends that it isn’t a diamond. They would view it as a diamond ’substitute’ (even though it’s not) which connotates cheapness and I don’t even want to think of what that may imply about their thoughts on my bf. But I just don’t want to lie either. Have any of you moissanite engagement ring owners ever felt this way and how did you deal?

I have a moissanite ring! I love it! My FH and I also wanted to avoid the whole Blood Diamond route, and we had the setting made in recycled platinum from a local Seattle Jeweler (which we designed). I think moissanite is a great choice and a beautiful, eco-friendly clear stone.

Oh and Phillymedgirl, there is a little bit of greenish-yellow tint to the stone, but mostly it just radiates more than a diamond and I barely notice the tint.

Oh, and a follow up for Phillymedgirl, some people said I would regret not having a diamond, but I ignored that comment, and when I told the rest of my family I explained all of the great traits about moissanite and why we wanted to do use it, and after that I didn’t hear any snarky comments. Most everyone was wowed at how nice the stone was (compared to a murky diamond we would have gotten at the price) so I think I sold them on it.
