I have a huge sweet tooth but funny thing is, I don’t like cold sweets very much because I have very sensitive teeth. But all of that went out the door when I encountered Bubbies mochi ice cream at a food trade show last year. Mochi is originally a Japanese creation of a sticky, glutinous rice shell with some sort of sweet paste filling (usually red bean or green bean) but in this case, the filling is delectable ice cream!

I met the owners, Keith Robbins and his wife, last year and they are the sweetest people. I asked them how they decided on flavors and they told me that Keith tests out everything himself and mixes up different combinations, which is what I loved most about Bubbies. The flavor combinations are not the typical ones catered to Asian tastes (red bean and green tea) but instead Blueberry, Chocolate/Coconut, Mango, Tiramisu, the list goes on…

Only the best and all-natural ingredients go into Bubbies ice cream (named after the Keith’s late grandmother), which I think is the reason it’s so tasty! The flavors are amazing and refreshing. And they’re the perfect snack size.

I met the Robbins before I booked my venue and was dreaming up ways that I could incorporate their mochi ice cream into my wedding. They told me that they once created a stacked mochi ice cream “cake!” I was salivating at the thought. I had been hoping to create a mochi bar so that my guests could enjoy one of my favorite desserts, particularly on a hot day in July… but alas with the amount of food we’ll have that day it might be too much!

If you want to try Bubbies mochi, the last time I checked, Whole Foods was carrying them in their ice cream section. I have to warn you that they are a bit pricey, but worth every penny!

They can also be found online and shipped overnight, though Bubbies is based in Hawaii and the shipping costs, well, may be a bit extreme…

What are some traditional or cultural desserts that you love? Will you be incorporating them into your wedding?

I *love* Mochi and so my parents– it would be my dream to have a Mochi bar at the wedding. I wonder how much it would be to ship from Hawaii to CA?

Oh my gosh, mochi ice cream is literally my favorite food. I was just wondering how to incorporate it into our dessert table, but I think it’s cost-prohibitive for us. They often have mochi at Trader Joe’s too. Unfortunately, it can be tough to find my favorite kind - plain vanilla. The simplicity of the vanilla is unbelievably delicious.

Hong Kong Supermaket on Main St, Flushing carries them. They’re like $3 per box. Mango, Coconut, Green Tea, etc.

Yach, that’s a really good deal! Locally, you can find Bubbies in our supermarkets, and there’s another brand. Costco even has it (the other brand). Sorry, I can’t remember what it’s called and if it’s also a HI brand, but it is a black and tan box, and I think the tan part has a bamboo plant looking design. It has writing that in that fakey Asian font (the one that people think of as “Chinese” looking). You *may* be able to find that brand in a Japan-town or China-town supermarket, or another grocery that specializes in Asian foods.

A word of warning: if you actually find somewhere that stocks it, don’t stock up in the extreme…the mochi doesn’t last forever; it can probably handle a month. Then, it turns really disgusting and brittle and it’s pretty unsalvagable. (I’ve tried…even letting it warm a bit does not restore the wonderful mochi gooey softness.)

holy crap! thank you so much for posting about this! I never knew what they were called. This one sushi chef used to give one to my friend and I for free all the time, but then kind of stopped and we don’t really make it there anymore. These are the most delicious things ever! I’m so excited for our Hawaiian honeymoon now.

The craze you started! I saw this post during a snowstorm - I hate going to our Whole Foods when it snows - so I went to the website and I was an instant convert. Just seeing the list of flavors, and having memories of mochi candies in Japan, I had to have some as ice cream!!!!

Fortunately, the price quoted includes the never-mentioned shipping costs. A person can rationalize that this is the equivalent of a nice dinner out on the town, and with deep snow that’s only going to turn to gray, yucky mush/slush, I’d rather savor every bite of mochi ice cream (shipped directly from Hawaii!) than traipse through that mess after finding a parking space.

To justify the purchase further, we had a dinner party and shared them with friends. Now one of those friends wants to use her tax rebate to order some of her own!

So, thank you for introducing us to this magical product! I have yet to find out if our Whole Foods carries them…That could turn into a dangerous habit. But, Guava, Pistachio, and Lychee are household favorites so far. : )
