Red Carpet Inspiration

January 31st, 2008 @ 11:28 am by Mrs. Radish

If you caught the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night you probably noticed some stunning gowns, along with all the beautiful hair and makeup that Mrs. Butterscotch blogged about. I thought some of these dresses could provide great inspiration for anyone out there thinking of having a custom wedding gown made.

My choice for best dressed at the SAGs is definitely French starlet Marion Cotillard in this absolutely breathtaking gown from Nina Ricci. Wouldn’t it make a fabulous wedding dress in white or ivory? Or maybe even in grey for the less traditional bride. It’s so romantic and dreamy and would be flattering on many body types. I also love her hair and makeup. Very understated and natural.

Here’s Marcia Cross in a beautiful Monique Lhuillier. I just love the shape of this dress and how ethereal it looks.

Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera was looking anything but “ugly” in this lovely Monique Lhuillier lace gown. I love the cut and the lace that drapes over the shoulder. Very pretty!

Christina Applegate, who is making a comeback on television’s Samatha Who?, is certainly memorable in this vintage-glam Elie Saab dress. It may be a tad on the bedazzled side for a wedding, but the silhouette is great and I love the scalloping on the bottom.

Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez looks fantastic in this Angel Sanchez gown. I love Sara Ramirez and I think she is gorgeous all the time, and I love that she has a more curvaceous figure and she’s not afraid to show it. I’m sick of all the starlets being a size 2! I want to see more beautiful REAL women, dammit!

Of course, I can’t forget Kate Beckinsale in this attention-getting yellow number from Luisa Beccaria. Wouldn’t it be lovely in white? I love all the layers and the little brooch at the waist.

Is anyone getting a custom dress made? If so, are you also looking at non-wedding dresses for inspiration?

I totally think you could use the dress Christina Applegate wore as a second dress for say the reception…it would sparkle and be sooo amazing!

Marion Cotillard is absolutely gorgeous. And I have to recommend her movie, La Vie En Rose, for anyone who hasn’t seen it. The movie is so incredibly powerful, and she was fantastic in it!

I am getting my dress custom made. The back of my dress and the train will be very similar to Sara’s dress. I LOVE LOVE LOVE America’s entire look. All the dresses are beautiful.

Great choices, Mrs. R! These were all my favorites, too… I also loved Rebecca Gayheart’s with the little peplum and Kyra Sedgwick’s blue one (same color as one America wore last year sometime). And Marcia Cross’s jewelry was as amazing as her dress!

I’m having a dress made by Chrissy Wai-Ching. If you haven’t checked out her stuff yet, it’s amazing - and she does everything custom for *way* under $1000! Incredible. My dress will be pretty simple compared to some of her other designs, but it’s going to be a dark champagne silk with jewel-tone details/accents. I’m a musician and have to dress up a lot, so if I’m spending a ton of money on a dress, I want to be able to wear it again for performances…

Loved Marion Cotillard’s dress!!! I would be so freaking thrilled if I could get a custom dress like that one. I haven’t found myself that attracted to some of the gowns in magazines/the Knot/etc., and when I saw her gown at the SAG awards I thought, “I could so get married in that gown.”

I’m going to have to look into a custom dress!

I’m having my dress custom made (by my Mom!) and it will be most similar to the Angel Sanchez dress, but a little more trumpet-y in the front.

I think drawing inspiration from the red carpet dresses is a great idea — helps to break out of the same-ness that wedding dresses can be! For awhile, I was looking at this dress Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore to the Golden Globes (I think) a few years ago — it was white with black straps/accents. Think it was Ellie Saab
