That’s right, folks. We have purchased our wedding rings. We had a really good experience with Mr. Dahlia’s Artcarved engagement ring, and decided that we wanted to stick with Artcarved for our wedding rings- because of the guarantees and their lifetime resizing promise. So we went to look at rings last week, and placed our order this week. In the process of doing this, we learned that January is one of the slowest months of the year for jewelers, so it is a lot easier to negotiate prices.
So. On to the goods.
It’s important to note that I specifically did not want a wedding ring with stones (diamond or otherwise.) We do quite a bit of traveling, and I would rather have a non-flashy wedding ring that I can wear all the time than to have a separate ring for travel.
Given the no bling requirement that I had, we also decided to get matching bands. Now, I know that matching bands is something that very few people seem to do these days, but…we just liked the idea. My ring (4mm milgrain):

Before I got dressed to meet Mr. Onion for pictures, I took some time out to give my best friends and bridesmaids their gifts. Their presents were one of the first things I blogged about on the bee. I was so excited to see their reaction and I fully expected water works from all of us. It began, but no tears from the bride!

What do Miss Bubblegum, Miss Toucan, and Mrs. Corn have in common?!?

= FUN!
They’ll all be watching 27 Dresses with YOU this Saturday!!!

Before setting sail (er…plane) to Mexico for our honeymoon, we knew it could not be complete without a pit stop at Disneyland first. After all, it had been a special place for us the entire five years we’d been dating. At first we were going to legitimize that it was on the way to the airport (it’s not)… or that we had to kill time the night before our early morning flight. But let’s face it, we wanted to go and so we did!
Decked out for the holidays as only Disney does, here we are at the festive entrance to CA Adventures:

For our three year anniversary, Mr. Hum and I decided to make a serious investment together - we decided to buy a Wii. It wasn’t easy. With them being out of stock throughout the city, it took us about a month and a half to finally track one down, but when we did, well, our little video game family finally felt complete. I am nowhere near the gamer Mr. Hum is but I love the interactivity of the Wii and the fact that I can totally pummel his ass at Mario Party as Yoshi (I almost always pick Yoshi or, if I’m feeling girly, Princess Daisy). But aside from my love of the system and all of its games, I totally love passing the time making Miis. Mr. Hum and I got so carried away one day, we made our entire families and a bunch of our neighbours in Mii form because it’s just such a blast.
Anyway, I was blog surfing today when I came across what may be one of the coolest cake topper ideas ever - Custom Miis by Paul Pape! Not only are they super cute, but you can pick the level of formality of your liking!
I dumped him.
Okay, so I didn’t actually do the dirty work, but I left Mr. Penguin an E-mail with his phone number.
“Please fire our photographer. Here’s his number. I apologize that I just wasted our $600 deposit. You’re the best, smooch your boodles, XOXO.”
I avoid confrontation so much that I didn’t even tell Mr. Penguin in person/over the phone, that we needed to call it quits with our original photographer. And by “we” I mean “he”. Even though I was the one who hired our original photographer and convinced everyone that they were the studio for us.
I was young and naive. I was convinced that “most expensive” translated directly to “best”. Photography was the single most important thing to our wedding for me, and if we could only afford 4 hours of photography, so be it. Well, truth be told, this is the most asinine reason for hiring someone, because they’re expensive. It’s like dating a moron because he’s hot. Not gonna work.

“Is it bad?”, I asked, looking fearfully into his deep brown eyes.He grabbed my hands and nodded regretfully. “I’m afraid so.” I took a deep breath and wondered aloud if there was any cure, any way to rid myself of ORS, which I’d been plagued with all my life.
Mr. Jasmine smiled warmly and put his hands around my face. “Luckily, there is a cure……calm the eff down!” I burst out laughing and realized right away that I had to put a stop to my ORS, which I call Over-Researching Syndrome.
Yes bees, I have to confess that I’m an over-researcher. Google and I are soul mates. Yelp, Epinions, Cnet and Consumer Reports are my best friends. Every day, I lovingly put them to the test: Yelp, find me the best red velvet cupcakes in Lincoln Park! Google, find me the best hair salon near the UCLA campus. Cnet, find me the best laser printer under $300 (a thankless task that I’m still undertaking). I research everything, from what I might want to have for lunch that day, what stockings are most likely to run, whether that new movie out is really worth my $8.
So, go figure. Not getting married in Vancouver wasn’t the end of the world. I didn’t die of disappointment (unless weddingbee.com is heaven
), and our wedding wasn’t ruined after all. Not that we’ve actually had it yet… (aughh! somebody go knock on wood/pet a black cat/eat a ladder, whatever you’re supposed to do!)
Because our parental units had vetoed our original venue choices, we began to look at other locations closer to (their) homes.
And you know what?
Sometimes happiness lies right in your own backyard. Assuming, of course, that your home is in Langley, and your metaphorical backyard is the heritage village of Fort Langley.

…because we’re going to the chap-pel and we’re going to get mar-ar-aried!
One of the things I’ve resisted purchasing, despite all the eye candy out there, is a clutch. I’ve convinced myself that I don’t need one for the wedding and that someone wonderful will inevitably carry my stuff. With a million things going on that day, I will probably end up losing it. I also normally don’t carry clutches because my purses almost always require some sort of apparatus that attaches to me, otherwise it will be gone in 5 seconds because I will definitely forget it and leave it somewhere.
BUUUUUUT… I discovered these through my Google reader today and I just love them! And it has nothing to do with the fact that the brand (almost) shares my name. They’re all just so cool and tactile. I had checked out some clutches while I was in Hong Kong, but didn’t find anything that wasn’t clustered with crystals all around or really bright and accessorized. These babies from Nelle… well, they’re perfect. Simple, elegant, and modern. I love the contrasting textures.
I heart the contrasting colors of this silk charmeuse Cherub clutch.
Call me a guy, but I am really bad at encouraging people, complimenting others and most of all… talking about how I feel about my loved ones. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been good at saying the “I love you”s. My parents and I never really said it to each other and I just never got accustomed to saying gushy things like that. You can call me the Miranda out of the SATC girls.
When it came to Mr. Caramel, he’d tell me all the time how I’d make him feel and he would compliment me to death. I would feel so awkward and horrible for not saying the same things back, without feeling fake or forced. It’s common to have a different love language, and words of affirmation have always been on the bottom of my list. (You can take this quiz to see what your Love Language is.) However, ever since the engagement– I have improved (yay me) but since we’ve tied the knot, there has been a new problem.
I received a very exciting email last week from Viola, announcing the official launch of Chewing the Cud. As soon as I got the email… I hurried to see what goods she had. An awesome designer, Viola offers a wide range of services from designs to invitations.
I personally fell in love with Viola’s own stationery for her wedding which took place last fall. Here’s the oh-so perfect introduction from her site “Viola loves books. Phillip loves movies. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was their favourite story of all time and became the inspiration for the wedding. From child-like bird illustrations to references in book forms and movie elements, the entire event was designed to bring to life this sweet coming-of-age story. “

It’s that time of the year, ladies. It’s *gasp* Valentine’s Day and Mr. Kiwi’s birthday. His actual birthday is Feb. 10th, and I try to space out the gifts and/or affection! Usually for V-day, Mr. Kiwi and I have a dinner a home, with some flowers and goodies like that. This year, however, is a big year for him/us, what with this being his last year in his 20s (”I’m OLD”, he says), and our first married Valentine’s Day together.
The same question is, what to get for the man who wants nothing (that I can afford, at least), and is a total romantic? Since it’s been hella cold here in So. Cal, I am going to get him a scarf and some gloves- the manly kind. My aunt gave him a set of gloves for Christmas, and having never had gloves before, he loves them, but says those other gloves are “too fancy for work”, since he does work as a coach/PE teacher! So I must find him a manly scarf, and some toasty gloves. Warm heart, warm hands.
While perusing Macys for some ideas, I saw this kickass hat. Meaning, Mr. K would kick my ass if I bought him this hat. I understand Rocawear is a “cool” brand, but Mr. K would sadly look like Elmer Fudd.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, we were less than thrilled with our Macy’s experience, and were still on the search for a china pattern. On a whim, we decided to check out Dillard’s at Beachwood Place- to both check out jewelry for the day (I’m on the hunt for earrings) and to see what their china looked like.
There were several patterns that we liked, and while the registry person was helping another bride and her mom (who had made an appointment), she was as attentive as she could be towards us. As a bonus, Dillard’s had a table set up with a tablecloth, and we were encouraged to “try out” as many place settings as we wanted, to get a sense of how things would look on a table. (This try out was also encouraged for crystal and flatware. I thought the whole thing was pretty nifty, as you could really see how everything would look together.)
We set down a whole number of place settings, and one clear winner emerged:

Stratford Platinum by Noritake.
… and sports nuts like me!Miss Peacock’s post from yesterday reminded me of my own alternative to keeping my ring safe. I always take off my ring when I’m cooking or cleaning, so I needed a little holder in the kitchen to keep my ring safe. How tragic would it be if it actually fell down the drain!?
Then one night, Mr. Toucan presented me with a little gift - the most awesome idea (to me at least) for a ring holder ever:
Ta-dah! Presenting Mr. David Ortiz, aka BIG PAPI, the large father.
(please be nice about my sports affiliations! I’m locally tied to them - I can’t help it!)

(Somehow I doubt Cinderella had this problem . . .)
I love my dress. I love, love, love it. It’s got a light romantic feel to it, but it also has a bit of va va va voom to it to which is something I have to admit I really wanted. I mean, I’m only young and nubile once, right? I might as well show it off while I can.
