Mrs. Milkshake's Picture
Mrs. Milkshake, Seattle/Vancouver, BC Age and Occupation: 23, Pharmacist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Pharmacist Engagement Date: May 2007 Wedding Date: August 2008 Blogging Since: December 6, 2007 Venue: Victorian Mansion About Me: Despite the fact that I’ve invested many long years of my life studying the sciences in college, I’m glad to be out of there and I would never do it again! I’m super artsy at heart - I run an indie craft site, I grew up shooting and developing my own film, doing jazz and ballet, and the whole gamut of art classes. I’ve been called a Jane of all Trades… but I was also told many years ago not to make my passion my career because it’d suck the fun out of it. Hence my choice of day job. We live in Seattle but are having our wedding in Canada to be fair to all our family and friends.
About Mrs. Milkshake

Ready For Another Dress Orgy, Ladies?

February 4th, 2008 @ 8:24 am by Mrs. Milkshake

So I braved downtown Seattle again yesterday to tackle two of the three bridal places I’d set out to tackle. It was a good day to do it because it was Sunday, and the meter parking is free unlike in Vancouver. meter parking is also free after 6pm on weekdays, vs. 8pm in Vancouver. I’d heard great things about Cicada from local people that represented both rich brides and poor brides alike, not to mention brides with impending weddings and short timelines. The shop was surprisingly spacious and beautifully laid out. I was greeted by a sweet older lady, and I even noticed one of the designers milling about the store and helping out here and there. Two great girls helped me out and I had a fabulous time trying on dresses and accessories. The staff said they’d received mixed reviews online, and they were delighted to hear that they’d get a great review from me as I walked out the door just as they closed up shop.

Cicada gets an “A” in my books because a) they allow photographs b) everything is classically clean and simple c) it’s all handmade by the in-store designers and seamstresses, so go local! d) they have almost all their samples available in extra-small through large so it’s even more exciting for someone petite like me e) they have birdcage veils and other hard to find accessories in stock!

This was the dress that I had scoped out on their website in a beautiful sheen:

The portrait neckline enticed me (bottom left image in montage), but I wasn’t quite sold by how the model pulled it off. I decided to grab the portrait dress as an afterthought just 5 minutes before closing and was pleasantly suprised at how good it looked despite the website image, but wasn’t too keen on the two-piece idea for myself (although the top half would go smashing with a pair of jeans and I really could wear it again and again. I made a similar comment to a lady at a very high end couture boutique some time ago and she looked at me like I had four heads coming out of my shoulders):

The saleslady mentioned they had another with a portrait neckline, and I was so happy she took the time at the end of her workday to let me try it on because it was the best of the bunch! As long as it can be cinched around my waist with alterations, as clamps have been capable of time and time again in giving me an hourglass figure, I think it’s pretty promising. And it could go with my birdcage veil.

I do love how fabrics like silk charmeuse just glow (and in this case, I believe a satin). however, they don’t lend well to birdcage veils :(

Here are some more dresses. This one here reminds me of the $330 Maggie.

And then trying it without the ruffling along the bustline:

Because, again, every store has a fun little number. This was also their in a delicate light blue that looked fantastic on the hanger:

Lace! Lace! I had high hopes for this dress, but it just didn’t do it for me.

Here’s my attempt to make it have a sweetheart neckline:

Another cowl neck they happened to have:

They stock fur capelets and both organza and lacey boleros, and millenery finds to boot, including birdcage veils!!! Up until today, I’d never been in a store with any mentionable birdcage veils to speak of.

Dresses are hemmed to your length at no charge, come in standard xs/sm/med/lg sizes, and alterations are by the hours - otherwise a neat option is to add 25% onto the pricetag and the dress will be custom built for your body, with a muslin mock up made ahead of time to ensure the perfect fit.

I found this online and forgot to try it on:

The second one with the portrait neckline (the Heather maybe?) is very flattering on you… I’ve been following your dress search with interest and that is the first one (in my mind) that looks like it a ‘belongs’ on you. Bravo.

Miss Milkshake who brings all the dresses to the yard…lol.
I keep looking at all your possible picks and I think that you might be interested in my dress…or at least the designer of my dress.
Check out Sophia Tolli (I think it is just sophiatolli.com) Mine is the Lynette…but all of her dresses are ga-georgeous!!!

I got my dress from Alfred Angelo and look at it almost daily online - since it is at my parent’s house and I don’t have constant access to it. During today’s dress stalk, I saw style number 1148 and I immediately thought of you (is that creepy?). Here is a link for it: http://www.alfredangelo.com/Collections/ProductDisplay.aspx?productID=b55ac898-18fa-467f-8f36-1a945e143d20&categoryID=32e5a88c-cbf1-498f-afcf-dbfca138c5d3&pg=10
It is similar to the Heather, but with a tie-up back (which might help you since you are so tiny) and, as an added bonus, it is in the “under $599″ price range. Also, to save on alteration costs, since I am about your size, I ordered my Alfred in a shorter length. If you hate it, that’s fine, too, hahah just thought it was worth mentioning. :) Keep up the dress-hunt, it is always fun to see the different styles you try on!

Wow, I couldn’t believe how much the first dress looked like my dress… So here is a link, because it was amazing, and pretty reasonable depending on the shop… the price range was $800-$1800, we ended up somewhere in the middle to go with a nice bridal shop.

too many dresses…i liked the other bees who limited the dresses to the ones they favored! i like to follow along, but it’s too hard to keep track. not to mention..kind of boring to keep reading, hoping for an end.

wow…jenny, that was a bit callous. remember…we are all human on the other side of the screen. who knows, maybe there is someone out there with a similar body shape to Miss Milkshake’s, who is really appreciating seeing all of these dresses on a body type like hers.

I know I like seeing them and I’m already married!!

Milkshake, I love it. You’re like the official Weddingbee dress try-er on-er. Makes me wish I had tried on more. You look fantastic in about 90% of them, so I’m just psyched to see what you actually choose.

p.s. Why can’t I look as cute in glasses?

Gotta comment again to support Mrs Onion’s comment and say that as a former bride, I still love seeing all the different dresses and will read your dress posts as long as you keep ‘em coming! :)
