Poll: When Did You “Know”??

February 5th, 2008 @ 4:48 pm by Mrs. Tulip

We’ve all seen it in the movies and heard it described: the romantic stories of people leaving a first date declaring, “this … THIS is the person I will someday marry!”

That is not exactly the case with Mr. T. and me. When we first met, we hit it off immediately. Conversation had never flowed so easily. And I found him terribly attractive. But many things were awkward for the first several months of dating. It wasn’t exactly the right time for either of us — I was just getting over a many-year relationship, and he wasn’t quite ready to settle down.

Seven months in, we broke up. And it wasn’t until we got back together, a few months later, that everything fell into place, we declared our undying love, etc., etc., and here we are on the brink of matrimony today.

Which got me to wondering… How many of you knew your spouse-to-be was “the one” when you first got together? And how many of you took a bit longer for the relationship to develop?

You need another voting option. Like something in between love at first sight and took a little longer to grow. It wasn’t love at first sight with my guy, but there was something very special there right from the beginning.

i think we both might have know it was love at first sight if we werent so stubbornly opposed to love in general at that point in our lives. it took ~9 months of constant fighting & “playing the field” before we “got serious”. even my mom says she knew we would eventually be together just a few months after i met FI… and she met him for like a second. i dunno, she saw it in our eyes?

Ha. When I first met my now-fiance the very first day I moved into my college dorm, I thought he was a pompous jerk, and he didn’t think much higher of me. Needless to say, it was far from love at first sight. I couldn’t STAND him for the first ~9 months of knowing him. Then he slowly became a casual acquaintance (we did a lot of similar activities in college so we kept running into each other), then a friend, then a really good friend, and finally a boyfriend. But even when we were dating, I didn’t think it would be forever — we must have almost broken up a half dozen times over the 4+ years we dated before getting engaged. I guess we were just too stubborn to give up.

We were inseparable buddies for a year and a half before we were both ready to acknowledge a romantic relationship. OK, he had a big crush on me but I was oblivious… and then it took me more than 4 years to get to the point that I could see us as husband and wife. Love, companionship, passion, respect, support yes it was there. Marriage-ready took time. And now I just can’t wait to be married because it already feels like we are.

We met through a mutual friend at his Kentucky Derby Party in Louisville. After a first electric kiss in the pouring rain, we decided to do a long distance relationship-him in Denver working for a consulting firm and me in Texas with Teach for America. It took us 3 years total to get engaged (We’ve lived together in Denver for 2 years now.), but I think we both knew it was special from day 1 or we never would have tried long distance without knowing anything about one another! When I look back on it, it was a crazy decision, but the best one I have ever made:) I guess I am going to second the somewhere in between answer?!?

Our story is a little different. We met while drunk in Havsu. He was on a “boys only” trip and I was on a date. Sure, I had realized by this poin that my date wasnt the one, but I never planned on “cheating”. In fact, when my fiance and I met, I didnt even notice him. I was really trying to hook up my “dates” roomate and his FIs cousin. The next day though, I couldnt get him off my mind. We eventally went out that night (dont worry date boy was gettin his own from some other girl). When he dropped me off at my campsite,I stumbled in the pitch black dark to my tent, hit my shin on a picnic table and some voice in my head (yes i hear voices) said “this is the man you are going to marry”…I laughed at the thought….and went to bed.

FI and I met in Econ class in college and we dated for three months before he declared his love and I got scared and broke it off (two days before Valentine’s Day, even!!)

It wasn’t until a few years later, after graduation, and he was in a relationship that I realized that I wanted to be with him. I declared my love, and he broke it off with the other girl. Now we’re getting married, but I still worry that karma is going to bite me in the a*ss!!

We started dating after knowing one another for six weeks. At that point, it was pretty certain to me, at least, and has proceeded to get deeper and deeper. Before the six week mark, though, was interesting… he had apparently resolved that he was going to find someone, and I had resolved not to find anyone until my junior year (we were both college freshmen). He thought I was cute but dating another guy, I thought he was a freak who reminded me a lot of my uncle.. it took a few weeks for us to get past the exteriors. Once we were there, though, we’ve never looked back.

Ours is def. “at first sight”. He knew immediately after one of our first conversations. I knew immediately after we spent our first weekend together (which was literally 4 days after we met).

That’s tough. We met on the internet (how taboo) and talked on the phone for months.
Then I moved 3000 miles to be with him and it just so happened that we fell in love :D

When my fiancee and I met, I really wasn’t attracted to him. I thought he was cute, but he just wasn’t my type. There was just something about him though, and I couldn’t stop thinking about him so we continued to spend time together. Well one day, we were having this cleaning frenzy and I was helping him clean out/ get rid of things in his room. I was folding his tshirts and arranging them in the drawers when I looked up at him and he was staring at me with this longing gaze and I said, “So, y’know we’re getting married right?” and he nodded and answered, “Yes.” We were engaged 2 months later :)

We were friends for almost 20 years. He was actually married when I met him; we worked together. I knew he was a really special guy, but never thought of him as anything but a friend. Then five years ago his wife ran off with a guy motorcycle-riding, unemployed pipefitter, leaving him with the two kids; I was living in Denver at the time. Three years ago I came back to town for a visit to help my dad recover from surgery, and went out to dinner to catch up with my old friend. Six months later we were dating; six months after that I moved back home. That was two years ago this month, and we will be married in July. Sooooo, I would say it took a while!

Ours was pretty much “at sight”. We met on a cruise ship; I was cruising, and he was playing piano in the band. I overheard him say that he was just on break from medical school in the city where I live. On New Year’s Eve, I was drunk enough to forwardly introduce myself (which I NEVER do), and we’ve been together ever since.

After walking away from him, after introductions and our first conversation, my friend turned to me and said, “Yea, you’re getting married.” It was really a love-at-first-sight thing and I guess it was pretty obvious if she picked up on it, too. :)

We met freshman year of college, so we didn’t think “this is it” right away. But I remember that about a year into the relationship, we were looking up at the stars together and he said “if I ever love anyone more than I love you, it’ll be my wife.” Kind of an odd thing to say, now that I think about it, but the sentiment was there. ;)

can i just say that i love this post!

it def wasn’t love at first sight for us…mostly because when we met, i had my head up my @$$ dealing with other guys (bitter much?!).

and thennnn…when we finally started dating 6 months or so after meeting, other complications arose and i definitely did not expect our relationship to go anywhere. he apparently thought differently and has since devoted himself to changing my mind. his persistence has paid off, i’m now his biggest fan…and he’s been confidently dropping hints about e-rings for the past couple of days (I KNOW! CRAZY!).

I never thought I was the love at first site kind of girl, until I met my fiance. We went out on a blind date and I called my mom after the date and told her “if I don’t marry him, I want to marry someone just like him.”

I seemed to know right away, and it wasn’t just a physical attraction, it was more than that.
