About Mrs. Shortcake

The Beleaguered Bunch

February 5th, 2008 @ 8:23 am by Mrs. Shortcake

My poor bridesmaids. A patient lot to begin with, I am no doubt straining and stretching their limits with my indecisiveness. Every month a new colour, a new “maybe.” Blue, green, grey, blue, green, slate, pink. You can see why my BMs should be canonized by the end of this! And no doubt they were relieved when I finally chose this Watters beauty in “coral” (sans giant hair mesh scrunchie):

And although the shape was flattering, and the crumb-catcher bodice was gorgeous, the colour in actual application was not warm pink but

ORANGE!!!! AUGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! (no offense to anyone with orange bridemaids. Orange has just always been my arch nemisis)

So, my poor, beleaguered bridesmaids are waiting once again.

I’ve narrowed it down to the following image:

THE IDEAL:

Angela T’s wedding - I contacted her, but unfortunately she had had the dresses made by a seamstress. This is not an option for my bridesmaids, who are scattered thousands of miles away from me. I love the pale (but not ice) pink, the sweetheart neckline (to echo mine), and the the pink tulle peeping out beneath their hems.

THE COLOUR(S):

Any shade of warmer (not blue-ish), pale though medium, but not hot, pink.

from the knot

THE SILHOUETTE(S):

So, my dear readers, because I trust and value your opinions/favorites links, I (and my bridesmaids) have another assignment for you!

Can you help me?

It’s not exactly like your examples in the post, but for my money it doesn’t get more 50’s glamour than Marilyn Monroe - this is like her iconic “Seven-Year Itch” white dress, but also comes in light pink - and it’s well under $200!

Ooh, or there’s this cute ballerina dress from Nordstrom’s (only $68 - and it has your tulle trim!):

The color of this dress reminds me a lot of the first one you were considering. It’s definitely pink in person. Very vibrant and I think it would be flattering for all skin tones and make for great pictures. It’s also not as shiny as it looks in the picture.

The skirt may not as full as your looking for but this comes is a light pink color. This the the dress my girls are wearing in the ‘petal pink’. Which is a much prettier color than it shows online. It seems almost white in the picture but is actually a really pretty pink & was $132.

I know you said no taffeta, but this one is satin taffeta and is a tad softer than traditional crispy prom taffeta. Check out Jim Hjelm JH5400. It’s adoreable and under $200 if you go through Pearls Place or Tie The Knot Bride.

You should check out the bridesmaids dresses at Ann Taylor. I’m using this one but in green… http://www.anntaylor.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=5117&N=1200051&pCategoryId=193&categoryId=229&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_229&showAll=Y&defaultColorNameFromCategory=Berry&defaultSizeTypeFromCategory=Misses

It’s not taffeta, it hits the knee, it’s under $200…its’ not exactly 50s style but it’s pink! They have a bunch of other dresses in pink too. Good luck!

If you’re willing to spend slightly more than $200 (we got ours on sale for $230), check out http://www.simpledress.com. Each of my bridesmaids picked a style in silk shantung azalea; you also might like strawberry ice or peony.

These look like a 50s shape:
Buttercup: http://www.simpledress.com/collection.php?page=buttercup
Tulip (one of my ‘maids is wearing this style): http://www.simpledress.com/collection_simple.php?page=tulip
Dahlia (another ‘maid is wearing this style):

have you looked at whirling turban(http://www.whirlingturban.com/)?
especially their petal bust dress? with a 3/4 length circle skirt it’s $170 if bought as separates and $180 if bought as a dress. there’s an extra charge for special fabrics but it looks like they would still be under $200 and seems they’d work with you to get the right color.
just a thought.

Try Linda Asaf Designs at http://www.http://www.lindaasaf.com/.

Linda has been wonderful to work with, and she custom matched my dresses to a tiny sliver of coral ribbon I mailed her. My 10 bridesmaids are all over the country too, and she’s worked with each of them entirely by phone and email. She’s got cute 50s style designs and uses beautiful high quality material. Good luck!

Okay i think I may have the solution for you. These were going to be my bridesmaids dresses, because like you, I am having a vintage 40’s-50’s feel for my theme. These are so pretty in person, and I love love love the exposed tulle at the hems. They are a-line, which is the most universally flattering cut, and as for the color they come in a lovely shade of soft light pink called Rosewater!!!

OMGoodness girls! Thank you so much for the links! Delilah and Anniebelle, i think the JH5400 MAY be the ONE! I just have to see if it’s carried by anyone in Canada near my girls. Also, bean, whirling turban may be an option for me- for my rehearsal dinner dress! Woot!

*hugs for everyone*

Knottie djrs is the bio that photo came from on The Knot. Her bio may have info regarding her bridesmaids’ dresses.

Sorry to add another taffeta to your list but this is tissue taffeta, which is soft and fluid without the liquid-like shine of satin. I’ve seen it on 3 of my BMs and they all look great in it, it’s very flattering and forgiving. I LOVE this dress but sadly it doesn’t come in slate blue :( This color is rose and there is also a color called dusty pink but it looks white on the site. Good luck!

Try Bari Jay http://www.barijay.com, especially styles 953 and 408 in dusty rose.

I’m not sure that these links will work:

http://barijay.com/style.php?style=953

http://barijay.com/style.php?style=408

I think Nordstrom carries Bari Jay, btw.

GL!

I haven’t had a chance to do the “homework” yet (detention for beanchar!), but am curious how you are making those cute blackboard graphics (both mr b and sister b are educators).

On a slightly related note, check out the cool “retro” tampon and business card cases on this site:

http://www.daddyos.com/retro/access.html

I bet you could DIY something similar as part of a BM gift.

I just discovered an AMAZING site for anyone looking for any kind of vintage-inspired clothing and accessories from the 1920’s to the 1970’s:

http://unique-vintage.com/index.php

Everything from flapper dresses to Pucci prints and shoes/bags to match??? My head nearly exploded with delight!

(Professor Shortie, I hope this will get my grade back up to a B+ at least!)

wow! so many great ideas! You all get A’s! And beanchard, you get a smileyface sticker for trying so hard - those links you send me were on an earlier post about retro bridesmaids! tee hee :)

And as for the classroom board thing, it’s very complicated. I draw it on photoshop and then add text. Woot! Woot! mad skills, yo!

Where is Angela T located? I LOVE THOSE DRESSES she had. Maybe you can get your girls measured and the seamstress can make the dresses and the girls can just have them altered? I want to see if I can get a hold of her seamstress. Do you have Angela’s e-mail?

Please contact me - leesuh1@gmail.com
