My First Etsy Purchase

February 6th, 2008 @ 4:36 pm by Mrs. Onion

So Etsy is all the rage on weddingbee. I had never purchased anything on Etsy (or Ebay for that matter) but was sucked in today because of Miss Lovebug’s post about cufflinks for Mr. Lovebug.

My First Etsy Purchase : wedding groom Il 430x024She blogged about Etsy seller Keys And Memories so I had to check it out. And I ended up, in a matter of minutes, ordering the beautiful cufflinks pictured above as Mr. Onion had admired a similar pair months ago that were almost $100 more expensive (the above were a steal at $40). I’ll put them away for his birthday (love having a great gift months in advance).

So this is where you come in — I need your help bees and bee readers. I had intended to have custom cufflinks made for Mr. Onion for the wedding but ran out of time (and to be honest, money). Here was my idea: Mr. Onion is a car enthusiast and he used to own a first edition VW R32.

If you didn’t know, you would think it was a GTI, but it was actually a pretty awesome sports car. He pre-ordered it because there were only 2000 being sold in the US, so it was a big deal. He LOVED that car. But he loves me more, so he sold it when we moved to NYC. I wanted to have custom cufflinks made with the car’s logo.

Can any of your help me find a custom jeweler? I’d love to start on this project now so I can have it for our 1 year anniversary. He gave up the car for me so I’d like to give him a little piece of it back.

Thank you kindly,
Mrs. Onion

I don’t know if they could do it long distance, but they definately have the ability – and their work is great. Try http://www.artmetalsjewelry.com/

ask for Chris Skylba.

Good luck!

I don’t know about a jeweler to craft the logo, but this site does really nice sterling photo cufflinks where the photo is actually transferred onto the cufflink (rather than under glass or plastic), so if you have a pic of his car they could be cute:

Hi Mrs. Onion-
Try Little King Jewelry. They are on 9th Street & 1st Ave. right in the East Village. Nearly all their work is custom. Mike and Jen are FANTASTIC!! We had my e-ring done there. Oh, but if you go make sure you have some time…they will talk up a storm.

And tell them Ryan & Audrey sent you.

I absolutely second Little King! They are great and even though I got my antique-inspired e-ring made there I also saw a ton of cool/crazy custom jewelry (lots of skull rings, etc.). They’d be perfect for this. They do talk up a storm and can need a little bit of prodding to get stuff made in time (since they are such a small shop), but they are awesome!

I have no helpful references for custom jewelers, but I just have to say, wow, I need to start shopping on etsy instead of at Red Envelope! :) I just ordered Red Envelope’s “ballpark cufflinks” for my sweetie for V-Day, and they were much more expensive! (More like those other cufflinks Mr. Onion admired.) Then again, they are made out of old seats from Wrigley Field. If there’s an etsy seller out there who does that…I don’t even want to know.

Don’t you love Etsy? I found a handmade simple red reding hood cape for my first purchase. I’m currently eyeing those custom cakes though. :)

A lot of Etsy sellers will do custom designs for you… I’ve had two things made that have each taken under two weeks start to finish! And often they don’t charge much more for custom things than for their in-stock designs.

scarlet16 and emily — thanks for the ny recommendation. another friend/knottie suggested them to me (they made custom necklaces for her BM’s and a ring for her) so i will have to check them out with such RAVES!

if that doesn’t work out i’ll look into some of the other suggestions — thanks and keep them coming :)
