About Mrs. Cupcake

The Horror, The Horror!

February 6th, 2008 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Cupcake

You know how it goes…. you innocently lie down to go to sleep after a long day of working and wedding planning, looking forward to retreating into the peaceful world of sleep for the few hours you have away from vendor emails and big decisions, only to be terrifyingly awakened by it. There’s no avoiding……

THE WEDDING NIGHTMARE
(dun dun DUNNNN!)

Maybe it’s because we’ve been engaged for almost a year, and the wedding — now less than 8 months away — truly seems “real” now. It’s no longer all about looking through glossy magazines for pretty pictures of my dream wedding and leisurely choosing vendors; it is “down to business” time. And by getting “down to business” I mean “getting as much done as possible to just barely dangle on the edge of sanity so I am not quite as insane as I am likely to be in the last few months leading up to the wedding.”

Along with the real-ness of the looming wedding have come these pestering little frightful dreams about the big day. The nightmares never have anything to do with my future happiness with Mr. Cupcake, which is great news, but they do annoyingly have to do with a lot of the details that I have become fairly invested in over the last year. A few noteworthy ’mares:

  • About five minutes before the guests are to be seated in the ballroom for our reception, our event coordinator takes us in to see the room set up….. and I find that the linens are not teal as I specifically requested, but FOREST GREEN. The Horror!
  • I wake up the morning of the wedding realizing that I shouldn’t have put off so many details because I find myself without a dress, no flowers, and no food for my guests. Everyone awkwardly tells me what a nice wedding it is even though I am disheveled and there is nothing to eat. The Horror!
  • Instead of taking a honeymoon, Mr. Cupcake and I find ourselves going to work the Monday after the wedding. When I walk into work, no one says a word about the wedding or even bothers to acknowledge that it happened, which tells me that everyone had a horrible time and it was the most boring wedding ever. The Horror!

In relaying my recent nightmares to one of my coworkers, she informed me that before her wedding she constantly had the same recurring nightmare — instead of flowers, she was always walking down the aisle holding her purse! Each and every time, she felt embarrassed and wondered why on earth she had to carry her stupid purse. (Since she told me this story a week ago I still giggle profusely every time I picture this scene.)

I know I’m not the only one out there with the wedding terrors…. what wedding nightmares have you had??

I had a nightmare last weekend. I dreamt that:

1. My photographer “forgot” to take formal shots of us at the wedding. We realized this the next day. I had my sister-in-law try to re-do my hair for me and tried to gather up the bridal party. Two of them refused to come, my hair looked like crap and for some reason there was green sharpie marker all on the bottom of my dress.

2. Two members of my bridal party don’t come because they are too busy on their own honeymoon (this one could actually happen…)

3. I forget to write my vows and end up saying stupid stuff in front of all my friends and family.

4. I fall down walking down the aisle, and I take both my mom and dad with me.

5. I dream that I am 8 months pregnant on my wedding day and I have to be rolled down the aisle. (I am not, nor do I plan on getting knocked up anytime before the wedding….)

I could go on and on. I wake up freaking out about this stuff. I know it’ll be fine, everyone will have a good time and I’m just being a paranoid freak.

Hello Miss Cupcake! I have had many many wedding nightmares! My wedding is about 10 months away and I am still far behind in the planning. One of my nightmares is that a whole slew of uninvited guests come to the wedding and they are not on the seating chart board. They are then turned away by my wedding planner and my guests look at me like I’m some kind of monster (even though they were not invited)
I have come to realize that time is running out and I need to get going!

Haha! Too funny and I know EXACTLY how you feel! My nightmare is always the one where I wake up that morning and nothing is done, nothing is scheduled, dress hasn’t been altered, no one knows what is going on. I have fought it off by making an extremely anal retentive schedule and to-do list. Also, once, I realized it was just a dream while it was going on and I did a little bibbity bobbity boo and fixed everything. It was amazing!

Ha, I’ve had the unprepared dream too (and my wedding is still a year and eight months away!). In my dream, my mom and I have two hour before the wedding and when I realize I have no dress, we run to macy’s to scoop up whatever we can find, and then start to make bouquets out of wildflowers! Yikes!

I feel you.
i dream of having nothing ready every night. Maybe because I have so many things left to do!
At least I have 108 nights in front of me before the wedding to figure out 108 last minute solutions!

haha… your nightmares seem so normal compared to mine! In one of mine, I was running around like a crazy lady. I got so stressed out that I got boils. Yes, BOILS. Then, the doctor put me on bed rest, in which I protested because the wedding was THAT WEEK. I was forced to listen to him because who wants boils on their wedding day? haha. Yes, in Toucan nightmare-land you get boils from stress, and have to be put on bed rest to get rid of them.
…. and that’s when I stopped eating spicy foods late at night…

I’ve been married for years and still have a wedding nightmare from time to time. Mine usually revovles around the dress being huge and flowers being dead and people not showing up (like the preacher). I think they are like those dreams of going to school in your pjs, just when you think you have outgrown that fear, they show up again.

I dreamed that I was at my wedding and I didn’t know any of the bridesmaids, the flowers were all wrong, and there was ANOTHER BRIDE there! My dad joked that obviously I’d walked into another bride’s dream of HER wedding.

I also dreamed that my wedding rehearsal was interrupted by squid-shaped aliens and US covert operations trying to kill them with laser beams. Yeah, that was a weird one.

I just got engaged over Christmas, and already had a nightmare! I dreamt that i waited too long to get my dress altered, so i had to do it myself, and then ended up with a crooked dress. Not only that, you could see through the dress, but nobody told me they could see my underwear until after all the pictures were taken!! ~sigh~ Better for these things to happen in dreams than in real life, right? :)

I’d say that two dreams out of five are wedding nightmares. I’ve been REALLY late in a few of them. The venues absolutely sucked and changed last minute in another.

The best (i.e. worst) one was when both of our exes showed up to pick up their kids from daycare and smirked at us during the ceremony.

Our poor overactive bride-brains… sigh.

i started having nightmares even before i was engaged, haha. the last one was two nights ago, when i realized that i didn’t know anyone there, i didn’t have any flowers, my mom was officiating, and my FI wasn’t there! instead it was some weird guy who ended up leaving me at the altar.

the best one (and scariest!) was the one where i “forgot” to book all of the vendors, and the reception was in someone’s basement — with exercise equipment and shag carpeting! that one was awful…

Of the many I have had the worst have been, walking down the asle and everyone laughing and pointing at me. When I got to my fiance, he was laughing too. And then everyone left. Even him. *gulp* Now what in the heck is that supposed to mean?!?

And recently, I dreamt that we got married on a football field and I was wearing a black fancy coat over my dress and as I read my vows I took the coat off the reveal my dress. Weird, I know.

I love hearing all the dreams! At least we know we’re not alone!

My very least favorite wedding nightmare leading up to the big day was ‘laundry day bride’… I had this nightmare several times, for some reason my wedding kept sneaking up on me, as if somehow I could forget my own wedding day? The recurring theme in these nightmares was always that a.) I hadn’t showered, b.) I was wearing ‘laundry day’ clothes, c.) I had dirty laundry in tow, and d.) All potential wedding guests are dressed to the 9’s where ever I go - - I believe that in one of my ‘laundry’ episodes my dad actually carried me down the aisle like a cat with his arms under my armpits, legs dangling

At least I’m not the only one, even our best man had wedding nightmares (about our wedding)

omigosh! I just had a nightmare 3 nights ago…I thought I was the only one! LOL. I dreamt that my big day rained…ON MY OUTDOOR WEDDING! I was not ready for anything, my makeup artist kept screwing up the fake lashes and they kept dangling off my eye…while this is going on, the rain came down hard, and then it stopped! So the ppl who set up the chairs outside started to bring them out again. Just as every one is being seated…A BIG STORM COMES AGAIN! So by this time, I was drenched and not ready either. There was no ceremony and the caterers just started bringing food out to the guests. My photograpgher was no where to be seen…thank God it was only a dream.

Yup having the ‘mares…so much so that I stay up as long as I can everynight so I’m way too exhausted to sleep. My fiance calls me a vampire. Anyhooo the ‘mare is always the same and terrifies me each and everytime. The day is beautiful my sisters and I are getting ready..everyone is joking and ohhh and ahhhing, flowers come, I shed happy tears because they are so perfect. blah blah blah.. then I notice that the photographer isn’t there.. I hired him/her to be there for “getting ready photos”. So my MOH, my sister calls him/her and ask their ETA. He/She says that they FORGOT ABOUT MY WEDDING!!! My sister tries to whisper and asks when should we expect him/her.. they say, “well we’re in Brooklyn so I doubt we’ll be there before the wedding is over”. Mind you the wedding is in Philly. So my sister has no choice but to tell me that the photographer isn’t coming. Tears spring out of my eyes, my stomach hurts horribly..so much so that this wakes me out of my sleep and I find that I still have the stomach ache and tears.

You know what? I just realized I had one other bizarre dream. I dreamt that I was getting married and for some strange reason there was a rule that I had to have a stand-in groom and not the guy I am actually going to marry. The stand-in was only for the ceremony though - at the reception I could hang out with the real groom. So odd.

I thought I was the only one that had these. I have 60 days to go and I’ve had the nightmares for about a month. Like some of you have mentioned I suppose it’s nervousness. I keep dreaming that everything is wrong in one of them even the groom is not the right one and I keep saying that I don’t want to marry him and mom insisting that he is the one. This dream has happened twice with different grooms in the dream (people I don’t know) I wake up relieved to find that it’s a dream. In my other dreams it’s the day of the wedding and I have the wrong dress and my hair is a mess and we have to leave to get to the church. I feel awful about going that way but always think in the dream that after the church ceremony I’ll fix my hair. My fiancee says that these are normal, like when you dreamed you went to class in your pijamas or something.

Wow, ladies — these are some doozies! Some of them really made me laugh out loud, although I know all too well that they are far from funny when they wake you up in a panic. I guess we all just have so many crazy details on our minds that they get twisted and scary when we drift off to sleep!

Keep the stories coming!

Just had a nightmare last night! I dreamed I hadn’t done a single thing, I just had a dress. We got to the church, there were no programs. It was ridiculous. I woke up in a sweat!
