About Mrs. Snow Pea

Mr. Snow Pea sent me this message today:

Low-paw,
Sun nien fai lok.
Lnau oi lay!”

Translation:
“Wife,
Happy new year.
I love you!”

As the only married classmate, I readied myself for school today loaded with red envelopes and crisp dollar bills. I really look forward to passing out ly-see this year! Based on Chinese custom, as a married woman, I have finally entered the realm of adulthood and can pass out money to those who are unmarried. The envelopes usually look something like this and you can buy them in any store in Chinatown and even online at ChinaBridal.

We even used these to enclose gratuities to our vendors on the wedding day. Since they are so bright and cheery, they won’t get lost amongst all the white/pastel wedding items. There are such cute options these days too.

As custom, I cleaned the house like mad last night and got everything in order. Tonight Mr. Snow Pea and I are supposed to take it easy and go out to dinner. Happy New Year everyone!!!

I remember how last year I attended my first authentic Chinese new year dinner, hosted by Mr Peony’s relatives. I had heard about red envelopes before, but I never realized I would be getting them too! It almost made me NOT want to get married so I can continue receiving, not giving them. :-P

I love your idea of using red envelopes for vendor gratuities! I might end up doing that myself….
