Veiled?

February 7th, 2008 @ 2:58 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Dear readers,

I need your help.

I’m getting married in t-4 months, and I figured out this week that I haven’t given any thought to my veil.

That’s not entirely true. I’ve given a little thought, but not much.

Here’s what I know:
I will be wearing a veil for the ceremony, but will not wear it for the reception. It will be attached to something like this:

Veiled? : wedding veil Wedding098
I hope my makeup doesn’t look like this. Or my hair, for that matter.

Vintage wedding cap available for auction here.

Yes, I know that wedding caps are not at the height of fashion- and I must confess, originally I had not planned to wear a veil. But as my mom is showing me her wedding mementos, she pulls out her (ivory) veil, which is attached to a headpiece very similar to the one above.

It was my mother’s. And my grandmother’s. And my great-grandmother’s.

I have to wear it.

My mom had replaced the lace to match her wedding dress, and I am free to do the same- I’m looking at covering with silk shantung, to match my dress.

My dress.

The question is, though, what to do with the veil part? It looks like I should replace it, since it is quite a bit more ivory than my dress is. I just have no idea how long it should be, or what type. I spent some time looking at Veilshop.com, and was thoroughly mystified by the sheer types of veils. Extra fullness? Cascade? Oval cut? Angel cut? I thought the only variables were length and fabric.

To make things even more challenging, the only picture of my dress on an actual bride that I’ve been able to dig up is found through Etsy seller beadifulthings (who has some really beautiful things in her shop!).

I’m not sure what length the veil is, but it is definitely on the longer side. The ceremony will be in a cathedral, so I could go for the cathedral length veil. I just don’t have any real sense of what I want, or what would work with my dress.

What sort of veil are you wearing? What would you recommend for me?

I am going to be wearing a Juliet cap as well! I am so glad that someone else has this style. It was also my mothers veil so it will have special meaning for the both of us. Hers (now mine) has a cathedral length veil coming out of the bottom and then a blusher veil attached about half way back the cap.

I hope that helps.

I’m wearing a cathedral length veil — very plain, no adornament and no pouf/gathering, etc. Probably a “drop” veil, to be technical.

I think if you’re wearing the cap and getting married in a cathedral, you should definately go for the cathedral length veil! I love it — very romantic.

I actually kinda like the wedding cap idea–it has a traditional/vintage feel, and was something I just started thinking about after being obsessed with birdcage veils.

I think you could wear it alone, without a veil like you were originally thinking, if you wanted to.

With that (clean, modern) dress & in a cathedral, I think your options for veil are completely open (sorry, not so helpful, right?)

I think it would look great with a cathedral length veil, or slightly shorter and edged with a silk ribbon to continue the look of the Juliet cap. Or you could go with a longer lace edged veil to add some ornateness to the cap onec it is covered in the silk. Since your dress has such simple elegance the lace would look smashing and emphasize the elegance of your dress.

Like many have suggested, I would go for cathedral length, very sheer– not poufy or adorned. Simple elegance to match your dress.

i wore the same dress for my november wedding and went back and forth about the veil. i didn’t want the veil to cover the middle of the back/top of the train but also didn’t want to wear a short veil either.

in the end i got a finger-tip lenth 54″ wide veil which was super sheer. i can send you some pictures if you want to see what it looked like.

I ordered mine from veilshop.com & was initially overwhelmed by all the choices too. I would up with standard fullness, I would say it looks a lot like the one in that picture. I can send you some pics or we can discuss more if you want!

My dress was a similar silhouette as yours, and I went with cathedral length, pencil edged veil from weddingveil.com. Great customer service, and the prices were unbeatable from what I had been seeing. They’ll also work with you to make custom veils, this might help with the juliet cap.

I’m a big fan of cathedral length in general, especially with such a sleek dress. Good luck!

I have a cathedral train with a lot of beading and detail work on the back. I bought a waltz length oval cut veil from one of the bees that she bought from veilshop.com. It’s beautiful and a waltz veil good length (comes down to my calves) that feels long but isn’t as long as a cathedral length and won’t cover up all of my beautiful beadwork.

I don’t have a veil recommendation, but I can’t WAIT to see your Jenny Yoo dress, omg. One of my favorite dresses out there.

First of all —- bridal caps RULE!!!! I’m so glad you’re doing this, it’s going to look fabulous.

You have a couple different options with this. Not sure where your located but there is a divine boutique in the French Quarter called Fleur De Paris and they specialize in vintage caps, hats, hairpieces. I’m in CA and I’m going out there just to get my hairpiece made (that’s how amazing they are).

http://www.fleurdeparis.net/

I suggest you call them and send them a photo of your hairpiece and they can give you options.

One of the things you could do is use vintage netting over your face so it’s a short veil in front, especially if you want to wear it for the reception. It’s all in how you want to look.
