Cake Decorating At AC Moore

February 8th, 2008 @ 5:46 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

In this week’s AC Moore flyer, there’s a coupon for 50% off their cake decorating class. Check out your local paper to see if they are offering one at a store near you. I am going there to sign up tonight.

I have always coveted the works of art seen on the Food Network competitions. Something about ruffled fondant flowers and lattice just excites me! A friend of mine took the class and now does some amazing cake designs that can be seen here on Cake Central. This is a great place for tips and inspiration especially if you have an ambitious friend who wants to make your wedding cake. This would be the ultimate DIY!

Have you or a friend taken a cake decorating class? What was your experience?

I think one of my bridesmaids and I are going to take a class at a local Michael’s Craft Store. It sounds like a lot of fun. A couple of my friends took it as an elective in community college and had a blast.

We did a cupcake decorating and it was fun, but I definitely didn’t pick up enough skills to handle something that would be displayed to anyone outside my immediatley family ;)

I took all three Wilton cake classes and loved them! It’s a lot of baking though, so I didn’t want to see another cake after I was finished. It did give ma whole new appreciation for bakers who take on weddings. Seriously…with everything that can go wrong with those things, it’s amazing they stay up…yeah, I love/hate watching them transfer the cake to the presentation table on those shows!

As a bonus, I got to bake decorate my own wedding cake…time consuming, but cheaper. (it leaned a little, but who cared.:) )

Yup I took a beginner’s class at Michaels and it was super fun! You never look at grocery store cakes the same way again! Plus it was funny because the first day I couldn’t make since I was out of town so I sent a guy friend as my replacement and the instructor was so excited about having a boy in her class!

Have fun!!! I think it’s a great skill to have - especially if you like to throw parties. My Grandmother taught me and I make all the shower cakes for my friends. I am making my wedding cake, too. =)

I took the starter Wilton’s class and loved it. I want to take the rest of the classes when I have time. Just fair warning, don’t go in expecting to be able to make a wedding cake when you are done. My instructor said it was about 3 years of practicing before she was really happy with the way her flowers turned out. She is a pro now, but it takes time. And there is a lot of baking, and hand cramping invovled.

I’m making my brother’s cake and, while I’m an advanced baker, I’m contemplating taking a class at the Institute for Culinary Education in NYC. But my brother and his fiancee are really really simple so I probably won’t even utilize anything from that class for their cake!

I contemplated making my own cake but my mom has forbidden me from doing so - I am a SERIOUS perfectionist and I would totally drive myself crazy doing so!

My mom took the Wilton classes when I was a kid, plus she was constantly singing in weddings, so the joke at our church was that you only had to call the pastor, the organist, and her. I still have a ton of her equipment in the basement, most of it VERY 70s, so when two friends ran off to Vegas to get married, I volunteered to make a completely over-the-top cake for the surprise “reception” we threw them. Four layers, heart-shaped, tiers separated by plastic pillars with swans, and covered by handmade chocolate hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Nobody cared that it was a mix. Actually, nobody believed that it was a mix.

I think cake decorating is a lot like other crafts: with a little basic knowledge and the right tools, you can do a lot.

I took a Wilton cake decorating class my senior year in high school with my mom and again with a good friend. My instructor loved my friend, but wasn’t very fond of me and made lots of rude remarks to and about me (I should add that I was not an obnoxious teenager). I haven’t wanted to take another one since then. I did learn a lot though, and enjoyed cake decorating, just not the instructor…
