The End Of An Era…

February 8th, 2008 @ 4:55 pm by Mrs. Bee

Mr. Bee just forwarded me a link to a very sad article: Polaroid officially announced today that they’re shutting down the instant photography aspect of their business.

The company, which stopped making instant cameras for consumers a year ago and for commercial use a year before that, said today that as soon as it had enough instant film manufactured to last it through 2009, it would stop making that, too.

I grew up with polaroids, bought a sticker picture polaroid camera when it came out and even had a polaroid guest book at our wedding (our guests had a blast with it!) Now I can’t help but feel a little sad that our children will never get to know the awesomeness that are polaroids.  Some things, like polaroids, should never go out of style!

Will you be using a polaroid camera at your wedding?  Do you have any fond polaroid memories from your past?

Lupakitty says:

OH NO! I’m glad I found a good deal at Sam’s Club out in the Midwest for the film. We were defiantly planning on having a Polaroids guest book, but our date will probably be a year or two away. :(

That’s so sad :( I’m using them at my wedding too and I grew up with them as well.

My sister’s first camera was a poloroid. No more shaking and waiting for the picture to develop. :(

For anyone that plans on stocking up on Poloroids, storing them in the freezer prolongs their shelf life. My parents were in the photography biz.

“Loyal users take heart, though — Polaroid said it would happily license the technology to other manufacturers should they want to go on supplying the niche market with film after 2009. ”

That was at the end of the article and gives me hope. Too bad they will probably jack up the price a rediculous ammount.
Frankly I think photographers would be rioting in the streets if no one picked it up, I know I will be.

Oh what sad news. And so strange i was looking at that just today. Thought it would be neat to have an old-school / vintage polaroid camera…

Gonna do some digging to see if I can find one before its too late.

I really wanted to do the sticker clicker at our reception. We used to have so much fun with them. But when I started looking around it did seem that they were going out of style. It is sad. But we have certainly transitioned into the digital era.

This is so sad, it really is the end of an era. I would like to use them for my wedding after seeing some ideas on here, but they are so very expensive.

I’m so sad about this! My mom still has her retro Polaroid from the 60s/70s (??) and I got one for Christmas a couple years ago. Mr. Cupcake and I sneak up on each other for a picture every so often using the Polaroid, and these lovely shots grace our refrigerator. 4×6 blackmail prints just won’t be the same :-(

Oh Boo! I worked at Polaroid (Boston) one summer in college and was working on trying to develop a new type of instant film for them (in their chem labs). I had some luck, but I guess not enough for them to be closing their doors on this industry. =(

Don’t panic! I checked the Adesso Album website (since I am doing Polaroid guestbooks) and they have some good news:
