As I mentioned previously, I ended up deciding to get my dress made. A very lovely friend of Mr. Hum’s is a seamstress so since she is awesome (and because I am picky), we’re working with her to construct not only my dress but the dresses of both our Best Lady and Matron of Honour.
It took me a long time to pick what I wanted, but finally, after I did, I arranged to go fabric shopping with the girls in Toronto. (For those of you who are reality show fans, we went to the store where contestants of Project Runway Canada shop for their supplies to pick out the fabric that would become our dresses.)
So, some pics of our trip as taken by Mr. Hum’s BL (since I am seriously camera impaired, we ended up taking a couple of snaps on her camera phone, so please excuse the slight graininess.):

Me and MOH Erin looking at what the store had to offer. So many choices!

The saleslady preparing our fabric for us.
(If you can see the kind of bluegreen fabric in the background, that is the silk shantung we’re using for the BL/MOH dresses.)

Me and my seamstress watching the action.
I am a little nervous at this point, but Allison is talking me through it.

All of the dress fabric in a big pile.
The large pile on the top is actually lace, which is the fabric we bought the most of that day and also the fabric which ended up making up half the cost of my bill! Ouch!

Me smiling like a gigantic dork now that my wedding dress plans are on their way.
Fabric-wise, in that one trip, we ended up buying the lining and silk shantung for the girls’ dresses, lining, silk and lace for my dress and some inexpensive broadcloth for a mockup. While in some cases, doing a mockup is not necessary (our bridesmaid dresses are going straight from pattern to dress), getting broadcloth for my dress was an essential step because when you’re working with an expensive/delicate fabric like lace, you don’t want to be sewing and resewing it over and over again if you need to change the pattern.
After we went fabric shopping, it was time to sit back and wait for my seamstress to sew a broadcloth version for me to be able to try on. I was so excited to see what the dress would look like. The waiting was a little difficult, but finally this weekend I got to go and see the mockup of my lovely, lovely dress. To help me be able to picture what the finished dress will look like (I am the worst visualizer ever), we picked a broadcloth that is a similar to my actual dress colour so I could get an idea of what the final dress would look like.Check it out!

As you can see, I am a little bashful, especially since the fabric was slightly transparent (hello underpants!), and we are still making modifications to the pattern (at the end of the day, I decided to have the dress modified slightly so that I didn’t need to be so worried about booble slippage), but after a slow start dress-wise, I am excited to get things underway!
I have my second fitting in a few weeks, at which point I should have my shoes and proper undergarments, so I’ll take more pictures then, but this is where I’m at so far. What do you think? ![]()
