About Mrs. Hydrangea

Honeymooning

February 12th, 2008 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

When Mr. H and I began discussing our honeymoon, I figured we’d both be on the same page. Exotic, tropical and somewhere we’d never been. Boy was I wrong. Mr. H wanted to go somewhere that was exotic, tropical and familiar. His reasoning was that he wanted to relax on our vacation, and not spend the entire week being tourists.

I’ve always been a traveler, Mr. H not so much. It was hard for me to see his side of things until one night we made a mutual decision that warmed my feelings towards going to a familiar destination. We both decided that for the last few days of our trip, we would like our friends to join us to finish off our wedding celebration!

So, while I had only thought of new and foreign lands, I let Mr. H tell me where he would prefer to go for our honeymoon. Cabo San Lucas!

My parents have a timeshare in Cabo and I have been fortunate enough to go there for several week-long vacations. This past May, Mom H, Brother H, Mr. H and some of my other family went there for vacation. Mr. H loved it. Mojitos by the pool, cruises in the ocean, day trips and yummy food. So it wasn’t a huge shocker that Mr. H had decided this was where he’d like to spend our first week as newlyweds.

We will be staying at the Pueblo Bonito Blanco in Cabo. Mom H was kind enough to gift us her timeshare for that week and I had stocked up enough miles that our plane tickets were virtually free.

As a twist (and compromise) to our honeymoon, we are going to spend one night in Todos Santos, a small town about an hour north of Cabo. It is an artsy town that is very Americanized but has, honest to God, one of the best Italian food restaurants I’ve ever eaten at in my life. It is quiet and secluded and I get to have my little bit of adventure for the week.

We are scheduling the excursion so that when we arrive back in Cabo, our friends will be there to celebrate our last weekend of the honeymoon with us. We are still deciding on the hotel for that night, so more to come on that later (and suggestions are always welcome)!

Has anyone else included friends and/or family on their honeymoon? Was relaxing or exploring higher on your list of musts for your honeymoon?

I remember wanting to take our time, where ever we went, and I didn’t want to fly, so a trip down the Oregon Coast was perfect. The day after the wedding, we stopped back by my mom’s house to say “wasn’t that fun!” and they basically had to kick us out because we had a blast talking about our wedding.

We are not including anyone else, that’s our week. Most of our family and really important friends are coming from out of town, so we’ll be focused on them the weekend of the wedding. We did go back and forth about whether or not to go somewhere new. We knew that we wanted to just relax, wherever we went, so we decided to go somewhere we’ve been briefly, Chicago. We live in LA, so we get warm sunny weather almost more than I can handle. It will be a great place to unwind.

Our wedding was in the middle of an awesome week that our families spent with us, so everyone was with us for the first few days. After that week, we stayed for an extra 10 days and everyone but my parents left. My parents stayed on another part of the island and we got together with them a few times. It was a lot of fun to share our vacation with people we love.

Reading your post was funny. Like you, I love to travel and my FI has done very little. I have a hard time getting him out of the country. While I dreamed of Thailand, we are also going to Cabo. We are spending two nights in Buena Vista, three in Todos Santos, and four in Cabo. In Todos Santos, we are staying in Posada La Poza, the only hotel right on the beach. They have a two night minimum, but only charge a 25 dollar surcharge to stay for just one night. They have a honeymoon suite with an in-room hot tub. We are choosing the junior suite for half the cost that has a private hot tub on the balcony.

When we arrive in Cabo, we are actually meeting up with friends that are having a DW there. We are staying at the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar. Rooms are reasonable and there are many options (ocean view, ocean front, etc.) My wedding isn’t until July, so I would love more feedback after you go or suggestions ahead of time. I am sorry the post is so long, but it was weird to be right in line with what you are doing!

Ally & Pinkgerbers -
Oh man, I have tons of suggestions (mainly restaurants). Here are a few:

Trailer Park - it now has a different name but it has AMAZING lobster, people should know what you are talking about.

Mi Casa - great authentic Mexican food on the main square in Cabo w/ a cute store.

Edith’s - for a nice meal out, we always hit it up.

Mama’s - BEST stuffed french toast you’ll ever have.

My other suggestion would be to have your taxi from the airport take you to Costco before you go to your hotel. Buy some snacks and drinks to save yourself some money during your stay.

In Todos Santos, you HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO go to the Restaurant Cafe Santa Fe for Italian food. Seriously, you will just want to go back to Todos Santos for that.

There are so many other ideas, just PM me if you want more info!

A very dear friend of mine told me she was getting married 21 days after me, on the other side of the country (she’s in the beautiful mountains). My fiancee and I knew we wanted to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon, but we wanted a long honeymoon and perhaps a second destination. After we found out about her wedding, it was settled! We’re doing 10 days in Hawaii and then a 9 day road trip across the Pacific Northwest and into the national parks. It’s going to be AMAZING and beyond all my dreams. The best part is, it blends my style (beach!) and his style (road trip!) perfectly!
