You Can Do It!

February 12th, 2008 @ 5:01 pm by Mrs. Canary

Aside from mending holes and re-attaching buttons, I don’t sew. But seeing all these great projects everywhere from Etsy and Mrs. Gummibear’s magnificent valentines, got me thinking of small sewing projects for the wedding.

When I first started researching invitations and fell in love with Bird and Banner, this was the one that sold me (on top of all of B&B’s other amazing designs!):

Little fabric pockets.

You could create fabric pockets for anything: to house small trinkets/bridesmaids’ gifts or to embellish any other kind of wedding stationery. Or use thread and sewing techniques in other ways to decorate stationery.

For bridesmaids gifts, I’ve also been considering cosmetic bags and clutches, though I’ve had a hard time finding ones that everyone will like and are under $30. I got them a ton of other stuff and the bag would be a nice-to-have, but not part of the main gift. After lots of searching on Etsy, I still couldn’t find anything I liked, but then today, I stumbled upon this great DIY handbag blog, U-handblog. It offers GREAT tutorials on how to make various kinds of bags. The instructions are very clear and there are lots of pictures to follow along with. My favorite one is the clasp purse with the metal frame. Check out the blog for other great handbag patterns and tutorials. The best part is that they’re all free. :)

Most of the projects require very basic sewing that I think you can do by hand (for small clutches and purses) or with a sewing machine (if you’re fortunate and/or skilled enough to have one)! With an upcoming trip to Tokyo (where there are great craft and fabric stores), I can purchase some fun printed fabrics and attempt to make a few purses for my amazing gals. I might put Mama Canary to work on the sewing machine part since she owns one.Have any of you finished any wedding-related sewing projects? What did you make?

I am currently working on my wedding sewing project. I purchased bold patterned cotton fabrics in black, white, and pinks. I am heming the edges to make a 43″x43″ square. They will be used as the base for the center pieces. Each one is a different pattern. I loved the idea of lavish linens but couldn’t afford it, so this was a great compromise. After the wedding my MOH and I are going to make them into a quilt! I  my sewing machine!

Miss Canary, I think I love you.

I’m attached at the hip to my new sewing machine, so these ideas and links are PERFECT-O!

i am so naming my first daughter after you.

I am so happy to see others who are sewing - I thought it was a lost art.

I’m not a bride (I don’t even play one on TV), but I have been making wedding items for friends and relatives. I love those card pockets!

So far I have made ring pillows, garters, jewelry pouches, makeup bags, flower girl dress sashes, sachets. I just made silk initialed envelopes for the Bee Valentine swap cards.

I so enjoy working with nice silks and ribbon; It’s been very satisfying. I have an empty blog, and keep thinking that I will put up DIY instructions someday on it.

Cute!
I found a picture of a great ring bearer pillow in one of the brides magazine and knew that we (or my mom) could easily make it with ribbons that I chose and went with our decor.
She did and it turned out better/nicer than the one in the magazine….=)
I bought a cheap ring bearer pillow from the $1 store and we used that as the stuffing. I bought ribbon from one of the hobby/fabric stores at 50% off and we used some left over muslin as the bottom–can’t beat it!

Another super easy bag to make is “The Jordy Bag,” found on http://www.craftster.org. The best part is you can make it any size you want and it’s super easy. I made one in about an hour, tops.
