Escort Service

February 13th, 2008 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Penguin

There were, indeed, LOTS of Lovely Details at the “Lovely Details Wedding Showcase” that I attended earlier this month! I always try to soak in hot new ideas, especially because I don’t exactly have a solid idea what I’m exactly going to do when it comes to reception decor. One AWESOME idea that I did walk away with, courtesy of my florist Huckleberry Karen, and the lovely Lisa of Belissima Vita Weddings, was this great idea for escort cards, which I’m totally stealing!

Karen and Lisa tied simple place cards to wine glasses, which double as escort cards, AND will help your guests keep their germs to themselves when they set their glasses down. The best part about this idea is that your venue/caterer is probably providing wine glasses for the evening anyway, which means all you need is paper and ribbon to complete this project! Being the obsessive DIY’er that I am, I’m trying to come up with other cute ways to mark wine glasses as escort cards. You could find some pretty Mother of Pearl buttons, and loop wire or ribbon in the holes, and mark each guest’s name with a permanent pen/paint pen:

Or, you could DIY your own wine charms and attach each guest’s name and table number to the charms…each table could be represented by a color…directions at notmartha.com

The best part about these “escort cards” is that they wont fly away in the wind if you’re having an outdoor wedding! I can’t wait to get started on a similar project!

That is a really cute idea. My only problem is … you said the venue would probably provide wine glasses. That to me means they would want the wine glasses back. Some people might think of the glasses as a wedding favor also and take them home.

I like it, but I’d almost be worried that they’d think the glasses were theirs to keep….

I’m definitely not worried about it. I never heard of people bogarting things at weddings until I arrived at the Knot and here on Weddingbee, I’ve never been to weddings where people assumed things were “up for grabs”. I guess I run in different circles….and simple word of mouth should take care of grabby guests.

I like the idea but I wonder if people take their glass while mingling they may choose a different seat when then get back and rearrange themselves- what do you guys think?

Yes, I also dont see why this would be a problem if they chose their own seats. The purpose of an escort card is to lead someone to their assigned table. Many brides choose to let their guests pick a seat at that specific table, or else have table cards available for assigned seating once they arrive at their table. But, if a guest feels more comfortable sitting wherever they wish at a table, then there isnt any reason they shouldnt be able to.

This is a GREAT idea (which I may have to steal)! However, I , too, would be worried about my guests thinking the glasses are theirs to keep. For those worried about this problem, you can make the tags for the guests to put on their glasses, but not attach them to the glasses - that way there is no confusion! :)

Hi Miss Penguin!

I have to be honest. One of my brides, knottie RR&RB did this at her wedding. I used different cards and a stamp for my interpretation but it really started off as her idea :). Thanks RRB!

P.S. Guests did not steal the glasses (which were provided by the caterers) :)

Also, at this wedding there were used as escort cards only. When guests got to their assigned tables they had placecards waiting for them.

But they could only point guests to their tables and not have assigned seats. This is also done regularly.

Love wine charms! I made some for my stepsister’s wedding out of unique combinations of lampworked beads.

If you go the wine charm route, you could attach the card to the charm and make a little announcement during the toasts that the charm is their’s to keep (ie. hands of the glasses, you punks!)
