Busy Bee Boards

February 15th, 2008 @ 9:30 am by Mrs. Bee

Bil Bee was checking out our stats the other day, and it turns out that our Boards are now 25% of Weddingbee traffic! Now that Boards are a bigger part of Weddingbee, I figured we’d focus some of our (extremely limited!) resources on fixing it up for you guys.

I know some people have mentioned that they don’t always get their passwords emailed to them. Some other people have mentioned that they don’t always get private message alerts. Both of those are related, and we’ll be taking a look soon.

Are there any other board features actin’ up or giving you trouble? Or alternatively, any board features you’d like to see added?

Please let us know!

this is kind of weird and a very small thing, but since you asked…sometimes the spacing gets removed when i go back to edit my post. i told you it was small!

Yup I have that problem too! Also, a la Craigslist, maybe a function to report posts as spam?

Maybe more divisions between threads? Like a dress section, bridesmaid section, etc… that way it’s easier to search through previous questions so you’re not repeating someone else.

I’ve heard people complain about a “non-wedding related” post the other day, but I’m not sure I see the difference when it’s up on the boards. Is that a lack of knowledge on my part?

jilian says:

I think the ‘not wedding related’ board gets very overlooked. Many posts that belong there aren’t there because people don’t know about it. And I for one forget about it a lot - even though I enjoy reading those posts too!

Maybe if the links to toggle between the ‘wedding board’ and ‘non-wedding board’ were at the top (say - beside the tags link) - both boards would be visited more and the ‘non-wedding board’ may become more active and used appropriately? Still default to the latest ‘wedding board’ posts of course :)

Anyways just an idea. This site is awesome!

@loloeleven - Have you ever checked out the tag link on the Beehive?
http://boards.weddingbee.com/tags/bridesmaids
http://boards.weddingbee.com/tags/dress

Should we make the tag cloud more clear, so you don’t have to mouse over the Tags link to see the tags?

jilian says:

loloeleven - click the tags link (at top) to narrow down categories and search for older posts. Of course this works only if the original poster added keyword tags. It should help ya some!

hey bee, it’d be great if we could log in and access our profile and private messages from the front page where the blogs are! unless i just don’t know how to do it haha

Maybe unrelated, but I just wrote a blog comment, and it said “your comment is waiting for moderation” or something like that. what’s up?

@katiethelady - We have a spam filter, and sometimes normal comments get stuck in there. We clear it pretty regularly, and your comment should be live now!

Mrs. Bee — This is not really a comment about the Boards, but would it be possible to get a “personal archive” feature on weddingbee? On DailyCandy, each user can bookmark her favorite posts from the past. It would be great if there was the same function on weddingbee.

You know how in the regular blogging site if a wedding bee posts a response their icon will show up? Like if Miss Radish responds, I’ll see a little Radish. Can the same be applied to the boards? Sometimes I get a little confused when I see some of the names if someone is a wedding bee or if it’s just someone who likes radishes or petunias or whatever.

As mentioned above, I never get a notice that i have a personal message.

Is there a way to sort the board posts by date of original post? Sometimes I’m looking for a post that I know was posted 2 days ago, but it will be 3 or 4 pages into posts because it didn’t get a lot of recent comments. At the same time a post that was posted 4 months ago will get one recent comment and be at the top of the list. I like the way it’s sorted now, I’d just like the option to sort by date as well when I’m looking for something in particular.

Related to that, and this is just a general comment on searching - I like the google search function for the website and that you can sort it by blog/board/classifieds but I’d also like to be able to sort these by most recent vs. most relevant. For example, if I wanted to find a post on letterpress invitations that I saw 2 weeks ago on the log and I couldn’t remember which Bee posted about it, if I just searched for “letterpress” I might get posts from a year and a half ago and have to go through a few pages before getting the post I want.

As far as Tags…yes, make it easier to see there are tags there and how to apply them. And please try as best as possible to standardize tags. So that there aren’t tags for “makeup” and “make-up” or “dress” and “dresses.” Not sure how easy this would be to do.

This was long…but I do like the boards a lot. They are overall really friendly and I’m happy weddingbee has been able to preserve that spirit.

I know you already know about this - but sometimes pictures upload really easy, and sometimes not at all. Not sure why, and unable to predict, so its always a surprise when they don’t…

I agree with having the favourites feature. It would be cool if the board would be organized by ceremony, reception, bridal party, etc. And post relevant topics there.

could we have a vendor review area? word of mouth is very key in this wedding arena and i think it would help brides and mrs to toot the horns of good vendors. sometimes these thanks get returned in all sorts of wonderful ways…

champagnebride says:

it would be great if we could change our password (maybe we can but I haven’t figured it out) so that we can make it something we could remember rather having it be ‘kj34j3′ and needing it to be emailed to us all the time

CharlestonBride says:

Can there be a log in button on the main page, not just the board page? This way we won’t have to go to the board page and log in to leave a comment.
Thanks Bee!

I second all the suggestions from Pinky5, Bagdadbride, and champagnebride.

I would like to be able to click on the word “boards” and be taken to the board page.

In the right hand column, sorry I wasn’t very specific there.

One board feature I would like to see in place is a “report this post” feature— I sent you an email about that before when we had vendors posting on the boards instead of the classifieds- where they should have been!
It may cause more problem than benefit, but at least it could get rid of threads that don’t belong- or even the ones that just get mean and snarky. :)
Thanks Bee!

Laura says:

I would really like to see the Board be categorized. It just kinda looks catastrophic to me to see so many different posts up there.

Ideas for sections:
Attire
DIY
Budgeting Ideas
Family
Bridal Party
Honeymoon
Ettiquette

Thanks!

I agree with Mrs Daffodil and CharlestonBride about the log-in page on the main page (Blog) instead of just the boards.

Also, by the “Messages” notice on top, maybe having the number of new messages you have in parentheses… like “Messages (3)” so you know when you have new messages if the PM notifications aren’t working.
