I Got Shot Down!

February 15th, 2008 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Cream Puff

Mr. Cream Puff rarely vetoes my ideas when it comes to this wedding (is it my innate genius that makes all of my ideas too awesome to veto? I’m not sure). So far, he has only vetoed two of my ideas. Today, he vetoed one I really liked. I’m sad, but ultimately I think he’s right. My only consolation is that I can share this genius idea (which I’ll admit, was not originally mine!) with the Wedding Bee readers, so someone else can benefit.

So… the theme of our wedding is basically our memories and our journey together. When I saw Miss Flamingo’s post about Viola of Chewing the Cud’s magnificent wedding, I was in awe. But when I saw what she did with cigar boxes, I was in love.

Inside each cigar box are photographs and trinkets for the guests to root through. How awesome would it be to put one of these on each table? You could put family photos in the cigar boxes on the tables where your family is seated, so they could look through their OWN memories in addition to the bride and groom’s! Pure genius, I tell you.

Unfortunately, Mr. Cream Puff and Momma Cream Puff both think that the tables will be too full with cigar boxes on each table in addition to plates, glasses, favors, etc. When I suggested we put them on the cocktail tables, Mr. Cream Puff said he thought it might reduce mingling. Maybe he’s right. In any case, I’m going to step down on this one, because he rarely states an opinion. :)

BTW, in case you’re wondering…his other veto was about centerpieces. I love these, from Faye and Greer’s blog:

He hates them with a raging passion. Oh well. :)

I get shot down all the TIMEEEE but about 99% of the time, Mr. Penguin is right :) So, its nice to have a voice of reason sometimes or our wedding will be straight up wacky tabacky.

I know how you feel Miss Cream Puff! Mr. Canary and I are always negotiating the terms of the wedding with each other. But when it comes to flowers and centerpieces, he doesn’t care. Surprisingly, he did have a lot of opinions on the paper and Web site.

If Mr. Cream Puff is concerned about your guest mingling why not spread the boxes out on the cocktail tables (if you plan on having any). Guest will still have the opportunity to mingle from table to table.

When I saw Viola’s wedding, I loved these as well! In your defense, I do think that these would actually encourage mingling. Perhaps by cleverly placing pictures of people who are not well-aquainted together then it would help to strike up conversations… or finding a way to display the pictures and a SHORT blurb on each like “Be sure to ask Aunt Betty for her Lemon Pie Recipe” or “Uncle Gus is always quick with a one-liner”… something that helps everyone to identify and relate to one another while also feeling included can warm up guests who may not know each other very well… good luck- I hope it makes its way into the final cut!

I like both the cigar box and the centerpiece! Mostly my FI just says “will there be cheese?” that’s his contribution.

Mark shot me down about half the time. For things I really cared about, I put off making a decision on them until I’d get him to join my side. I really wanted us to agree on things since it’s OUR wedding. There were a few things I dropped though since he never joined my side (having ceremony readings for instance and having a slideshow - since for that one he’d have to do it).

Things we did that he initially was resistant to: writing our own vows, napkins with facts about us (though they arrived a day too late), our guestbookstore.com guestbook, having pictures taken before the ceremony (he was worried he’d be too hot). We’re glad we did all of these.

The cigar box idea is cute, but I have to agree with Yorkey that it would create too much clutter on the table (and distract from your centerpieces).

Here’s an alternate idea: Since what you’d put in there anyway would mostly be photos, why not do what we did. We put a collection of photos under plexiglass on a table. I gave an envelope of pictures to a friend and had her scatter them out. They were pictures of us from birth until now. This was our table that also had a basket of guestbook pages and pens as well as framed and labeled wedding pictures of our parents, grandparents, and a few great grandparents, in addition to our 2 best engagement pictures.

Another option since Yorkey’s so good at it: slideshow of pictures! I’m sure your guests also wouldn’t mind watching the slideshow and video of your proposal either at the wedding or the rehearsal dinner.

I meant to post something here and then got distracted. Andrew(FI) and I are distance runners and love to play “questions” while running; we both basically ask one another the most creative questions we can muster and then take turns answering them. For our wedding, I am going to put boxes of questions on tables as conversation starters (with an explanation on the lid of our running game). I am using favor boxes(smaller in size than cigar boxes) and coordinating them with our wedding theme by using colored ribbon and tags that match our stationery suite.

Danielle is right. The cigar boxes did encourage mingling. It was especially effective for us because our families had never met until the day before the wedding. Our moms ended up spending a good amount of time poring over the pictures together and chatting. Our tables were set up as king’s tables (long) and we only put 2 boxes at each table so they didn’t clutter up the space. Hope Mr. cream puff will re-consider:)
