I’ve Gone And Chopped It Off

February 15th, 2008 @ 6:15 pm by Ms. Dahlia

My hair, that is.You have to understand that my hair fluctuates with considerable regularity between these two lengths.

Long:

(taken in Playa del Carmen with my mom last month)
And short:

(Brandenburger Tor about 5 years ago, although my hair has been cut this short 2-3 times since then)

I decided that the ends were looking pretty scraggly- a good indication that it’s time for a haircut. Yes, I’ve been “growing my hair out” for the wedding, but a year and a half ago, it was shorter than the short hair pictured above. Now it’s a good inch longer than the long hair picture above. (my hair grows somewhere in the neighborhood of an inch a month.)

I mean, it was longer than that picture. When I went to the salon today, I said that I wanted to get as much taken off that would still let me have some sort of french twist for the wedding. I came back looking like this.

(FYI: I have no makeup on in this pic. It’s not a good representation of what my face generally looks like, but it is a pretty decent pic of my hair.)

Anyone else get their hair cut shorter before the wedding? (And who cut their hair after the wedding?)

I am so tempted to get mine chopped off, and with over a year and a half till the wedding there’s plenty of time for it to grow back.

I have been waiting for 6 months to chop my hair…..but I want an updo, so I won’t do it…..but the day I get back from our honeymoon, its gone! Its halfway down my back now…..my trial is next week, so we’ll see if I can cut it any shorter for the style I want.

I cut off 14″ of hair the day before my engagement party and donated it. It was a HUGE change, and I didn’t tell anyone I was going to do it, so my family/friends were SHOCKED. My fiance said at the party everyone was asking where I was and he kept pointing me out, and nobody was able to identify me from behind. I kind of wish I hadn’t done it because my hair is a tad too short to do anything I want for the wedding (I’ve always had long hair, and all the hairstyles I am drawn towards are for long hair), but otherwise I would have cut off maybe 6 inches, not enough to donate, and that would have been a waste.

You look adorable! That length is very flattering. I bet that was really refreshing! I am waiting until after the wedding so that I can have style it in a certain way, but then I am cutting it Katie Holmes style.

Would you ever consider getting sideswept bangs? That would rock with your bone structure!

i cut 4 inches off of my hair 2 weeks before the wedding — but i promise i’m not crazy. i have super thick, super sleek asian hair and i’ve learned from past experience that updos with my hair end up huge and super heavy and i didn’t want to deal with a ton of weight on my head on my wedding day. best decision ever!

Rock it, Miss Dahlia! You look great! I am also in that small category of girls that will cut my hair before my wedding day…I want to wear my hair down, but especially because the detailing of my dress is only in the bodice (its pretty plain) I want to make sure you can see it. So, I have to cut it!

I’m growing mine our for the wedding but I’m very seriously considering having my hair stylist meet us in our hotel suite before we leave for the airport the morning after the wedding to cut it off. Luckily she’s a friend so she’d actually come on a Sunday morning at 7am. :) I just don’t want to deal with this long hair on the honeymoon.

ug, i have been growing out my hair since last summer. My hair seems happier when it’s shorter since it’s fine and thin. But the dress needs an up-do so I’m eating my protein and calcium and hoping that my hair grows long enough by May. But then it’ll get shorter… ASAP.

I grew my hair out for the wedding (almost to my natural waist when down). On the day of the wedding, my hair stylist told me I had too much hair and that we could’ve done extensions if I had wanted to keep my short hair. :-0 After the wedding I did a Katie Holmes like cut.

Your hair looks so cute! I cut mine after the wedding. I seriously debated cutting it b/t the wedding and leaving for the honeymoon (2 days later), that’s how sick I was of the long hair.

Erin says:

Totally chopped mine! My hair was about 3/4 of the way down my back… getting very close to my waist — then I chopped it, as in Victoria Beckham bob around Christmas (we got engaged in July)!! Maybe I should not have done it, but short hair and long hair suit me… wherever it happens to be on our wedding day (Nov 15), I’ll work with it. I miss my long hair, but the whole time it was long I wanted short hair. Thanks fully it grows extremely fast! There’s always extensions, or the Jessica Simpson clip-ins :-)

I really want to cute mine but with less than nine months to go (and hair that grows a lot slower than one inch a month) I guess I’ll just have to wait…

Yours looks lovely :)

I’m guilty of the post-wedding chop! Which reminds me, I have to blog about my haircut!

You look great! I was a short-hair bride (just below the ear) and, since it was 95 degrees and humid on our wedding day (and 99 the day after!) I was really happy not to have all that hair.

I am actually trying to grow mine out for the wedding and then chopping it after the honeymoon, with enough to donate to Locks fo Love *fingers crossed*

And PS - You look GREAT with no make up on, if I looked like that with out any, I’d stop wearing it…;-)

Sounds like a lot of bait and switch going on! My first DD had her hair “longish”, shoulder blades, for her wedding. It’s now bobbed. My second DD is keeping hers just above the shoulders for her June nuptials. Neither guy cares much about long hair, luckily.
I do think that if long hair drives your man crazy, you should TRY to support him in his passion (or fetish?). RS

RS says:

P.S. Locks of Love sells and discards near total the hundreds of thousands of ponytails they receive yearly. (Maybe 1% is actually used.)

BunnyBlue says:

I WISH I had your bone structure! Te cut looks great on you! I have super long hair , it;s just about to my hips . I had a very tramatic hair cutting expierence when I was younger and haven’t had the guts to cut it since. I’m probably going to cut it after the wedding , I keep warning the poor boy. He loves it long , but I think it’s about time for a change.

My sister cut her hair to a super short bob just after the engagement. She chopped about 14 inches off. Looked great on her though.

DragonflyLady says:

RS is only partially correct. Locks of Love only throws away or sells hair that doesn’t meet their very well-publicized guidelines, though they do sell some of the remaining hair–again, much of it unusable–to cover overhead (still supports the charity, which I assume, is the donor’s main intent, right?).

The NYTimes article that started all the fuss explains, “Many people are unaware of the hair donation guidelines and send in hair that is gray, wet or moldy, too short, or too processed, some of which is immediately thrown away. Even hair that survives the winnowing may not go to the gravely ill, but may be sold to help pay for charities’ organizational costs [. . .] In fact, all three of the children’s charities sell excess hair — in particular, the short and the gray — to commercial wig makers to defray costs.”

I chopped mine about 3 mnths after the wedding. Cut about 5″, plus added a thick bang. I got a lot of slack from guys at work that I went shorter, but oh well. My hair grows pretty fast as well and it was getting too long!
