Cinematic Debate

Mr. Canary and I love movies, though nowadays we don’t go as often as we’d like… but Netflix gets us through some good movie binges.

Last week, we watched Away from Her which is such a great film and Julie Christie’s performance was nothing short of perfection. I only hope to age as gracefully and beautifully as Julie Christie! Anyway, the story line for the film is that Julie Christie’s character, Fiona, has been happily married to Grant for many years. She develops Alzheimer’s and they decide that it is best that she stay at a managed care facility. In the haze of the illness, she forgets Grant and develops an affection for another patient, Aubrey.

I really enjoyed the film and what it subtly said about marriage and a lifetime of making a marriage work despite illness and disappointment. Movies like this always get me and Mr. Canary into deep discussion of what ifs or who was right. I asked Mr. Canary what he’d do if I was ill and forgot about him and fell in love with someone else and he replied, “What could I do? I’d just want you to be happy.”

Our other cinematic debates haven’t ended so endearingly! After watching Eyes Wide Shut, we both argued over who was wronged more… Tom Cruise’s character for feeding his sexual curiosity and flirtations or Nicole Kidman’s character for planting the seed of jealousy. Or while watching another classic he said/she said film, The War of the Roses, I warned Mr. Canary about the consequences of cutting off the heels of my shoes! The Last Kiss had a panorama of relationships that incited a lot of argument, namely the right choice to make when you’re confronted by fear or change.

I love these discussions because it’s a really productive way to get our juices flowing on various aspects of marriage and relationships without making ourselves the focus.

Do you and your significant other argue or debate at the movies? If so, what are some of your favorites?

My fiance and I debate issues all the time from TV shows, especially the Law&Orders (regular, Criminal Intent, SVU).

The new Eva Longoria movie where she dies and comes back to haunt her fiance’s new girlfriend whose a pyschic, brought up a whole bunch of what-ifs and what would you do discussion. I think its fun and interesting, if not a little silly with our answers sometimes.

Glad to know we’re not the only ones!

We loooooove the French movie Amelie. But the boy doesn’t like romance movies at all. The last romantic movie we watched together was Pretty Woman… about a year ago!!

alex and i are filmmakers, so film debating is our #1 topic of conversation. in fact we’ve almost broken up debating over them…. the big one is “Hard Candy”. whenever we get into a heated film-related argument, one of us will scream HARD CANDY! and it usually means we should stop before blood is spilt.

the bf and i always discuss movies after we watch them. it’s fun to compare notes especially when we didn’t agree on whether or not we liked the movie. that’s actually my favorite part of watching movies with him, the discussion at the end!

Not quite the same thing, but we saw “The Bucket List” on Friday and we discussed what would be on our own bucket lists. I found out that he REALLY wants to go skydiving, so I am going to get him gift certificates to do so for my wedding gift to him. Unorthodox? Totally. But I want him to know that all of he will not have to lose his sense of adventure once we get married:)
