Here Come The Bridesmaids!

This hackjob of a photoshopped image started with the model on
the Alfred Angelo website, here. The dress is style 6129SN.

Growing up, I never fantasized about my wedding. I never thought about color schemes, what my dress would look like, or even who the groom would be. Instead, I pictured my bridal party, of all things. I organized my friends that way–which of my friends would be my bridesmaids, and who would be my Maid of Honor. I never thought about any other part of the wedding.

In my mind, I always fantasized that, by the time I got married, I would have a core group of girlfriends like the group of women on Sex and the City (and I know I’m not alone here–I’m convinced that’s part of the reason that show was so popular. Because we all want those girlfriends). The truth is that my closest friends are spread out all over the country, and most of them don’t know each other. This means that most of the girly stuff I always imagined–you know, going dress shopping together, bonding over stuffing envelopes–just isn’t going to happen.

For awhile, Mr. Cream Puff and I considered not having a bridal party at all. But you know what? I’m realizing that it doesn’t really matter that they’re spread out all over the place, or that they don’t really know each other. Chances are, I wouldn’t have asked anyone for help with the mundane details anyway. I realized that I would be lonely if I didn’t have my girlfriends standing up there with me. Yes, the wedding is about Mr. Cream Puff and I… but it’s also about having a fun celebration. And I want my friends to be an important part of that. And honestly, the girly “getting ready” time is something I’ve been looking forward to my entire life.

I decided not to have a maid of honor, but I chose my five longest and/or closest friends to be part of my bridal party. These girls are super fun and wonderful, and I know that they’ll make the day extra special. I wanted to make life as easy on them as possible, so I originally planned to have each bridesmaid choose her own black dress (you know, so she could wear it again). However, my future sister-in-law and mother-in-law shot that idea down immediately. They thought the bridal party needed more color. MAN am I glad they said that! Because that’s when I found the inspiration for my “tons of colors” color scheme. This was my inspiration for the dresses (from the knot):

But I was looking for something less pastel-y. I went to a bridal shop and looked through their swatch books. It’s harder to find five or six colors that look good together than you might think! By far the best color selection was Alfred Angelo. I chose seven colors that looked good together (kiwi, cobalt, jade, sunshine, fuschia, cherry and persimmon), and then pointed my friends to the Alfred Angelo website. I picked out a few dresses that I liked, but told them that they could choose any dresses they liked, as long as they were all in different colors. As it turned out, they all agreed on ONE dress (pictured above) and each liked a different color! The dress itself is super cute, not too expensive (if you buy online, it’s about $100) and everyone is happy with their color choice. They also decided that they should all wear the same color of shoes–so they chose “silver and strappy.”

I was a little concerned that the whole dress-finding thing might be a problem. Did any of your bridesmaids end up in a tiff over these decisions? Did any of you have trouble picking your bridal party? Did anyone choose not to have a bridal party?

love the idea of different colored BM dressed. i want to do something different, too, and i was thinking about having the girls wear patterned dresses.
Has anyone come across cute dresses in their research?

I actually wore that cobalt blue dress for my sister’s wedding last June! It was so comfy and cute, and I am planning to actually wear it again (I know, I know) for a party coming up! These dresses fit really well for a large variety of sizes. We had size 2 BMs and size 20 BMs in the wedding party and all of us looked supercute!

Thanks, ladies! I’m excited to see how it turns out, too!

Cortney–I am SO glad to hear that you liked the dress and that you’re going to wear it again!! That’s awesome!!!

Laura: the photo didn’t come from a bio, it came from the knot’s real weddings. They never post any info about where to get any of the BM looks they post, but I tracked it down for you anyway. It looks like the bride’s mom made the dresses:

Sorry!

We decided not to have a bridal party. I just didn’t even want to start choosing…. if I’d had bridesmaids, I’d have had to have at least six, and then there would hardly have been any non-bridesmaid young women there!

Great how your dress selection worked out. Can’t wait to see them!

Miss Cream Puff, I totally wanted to do this for my own wedding and chickened out b/c I couldn’t visualize how it would look…and now I’m filled with regret, because it looks great! Nice job.

I was originally going to do this as well, but like everyone else chickened out. Besides all my girls liked the same color! I LOVE the idea and think it will look awesome.

I got my three bridesmaids different cocktail dresses from bcbg that were in the same colour tones - blush and mocha pink - i really wanted them to look modern and the idea of them in the same dress to me was really archaic - we will see how it goes!

I totally related with what you wrote in this entry, Ms. Cream Puff. My bridesmaids are all over the place too and don’t know each other very well, but you just gotta remind yourself that the big day is for YOU! Things sometimes turn out even better than what you had expected and your girlfriends will become friends with each other during the whole wedding process!

Yay! Great pick for the BM dresses - we chose the same Alfred Angelo style for our wedding and they came out great - we picked a deep red color - I forget the name but I loved it.

Enjoy!

When I thought about weddings while growing up all I thought about was who would be in my bridal party. I also didn’t care about colors, flowers, etc.

I also had five bridesmaids and no maid of honor.
