My Love/Hate Letter To Macy’s

February 19th, 2008 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Petunia

Dear Macy*s:

I hate to be so bold, but I’m starting to think your wedding registry sucks. I just don’t understand why you haven’t yet worked out all the kinks that are currently bogging you down, or why you can’t seem to keep anything I want in stock. Take this lovely vase I set my eye on:

364867_fpx.jpg

For weeks, I kept trying to add it to our list, but you insisted on adding the matching photo frame instead, which I simply did not care for. Then one day, poof, the option to add anything from this collection was just altogether gone, only to reappear days later. This time you let me add the vase, oh yes, but its price had exorbitantly climbed. Sigh.

You’ve also put me in quite the etiquette pickle with your endless emails letting me know things have been purchased, but are on backorder. It wouldn’t sting so much if this were just the case on one item or two, but no: everything seems to be on backorder these days. My china is, and so is my flatware. It was bad enough when my friend bought these in January and you told her they’d be shipped in February, but now you’re saying April, and you’re starting to piss me off:

flatware petunia.JPG

Forget my bedding, too: I’ll be lucky to ever get any of the pieces I wanted. You broke my heart the other day by telling me I had to select replacement items for these:

And why, oh why, if you offer me the option to add the 8″ and 10″ versions of this adorable cake stand, can’t I also add the 13″? I know you sell it online, too, so I can’t understand why you’re holding out on the big one:

cupcake platter.JPG

But here’s the thing: you’re like the popular high school girl everyone loves. My guests have snubbed my Williams-Sonoma list and flock to your pretties like no other. Plus, I can’t deny you’re open-hearted, and are willing to forgive impulse buys/desires and take returns like no other. And though you are a bit stingy with putting all the things available in person online, you still have many other lovelies to offer. Today I’m hating on you, but I know I’m also stuck with you. Put on a big sale and make it up to me, ’k?

Sincerely,
Miss Petunia

Story of my life. I put my flatware on my registry and it told me to pick a replacement like the next day. Yet…when I picked it out in the store, they told me it was a new pattern that just came in. How could they be discontinuing a new pattern already? I want my Kauffmans back!!!!

it was hard for me to not register at Macys but ultimately it is a decision I’m happy with…Macy’s in-store customer service is heinous, and I just cant deal…unfortunately, it does make it harder on your guests if you dont register at a widely known chain like Macy’s but I can just picture myself wanting to stab someone when I try to go in and complete my registry post wedding :(

I always dreamed of registering at Marshall Field’s… and Macy’s took the dream away. I boycotted shopping there since the take-over, but thought I’d give the registry a try as a convenience to my guests. My FH and I spent hours with the scanner and ended up with only 10 items on our list! The selection was terrible, and they were out of everything we might have been interested in. Macy’s can never replace Marshall Fields…

Macy’s registry service is a huge pain in the butt. But they have stuff we want, so we’re stuck with them. I don’t understand why this whole registry thing is so hard for them. Or maybe they know they can provide a bad experience for customers because they keep on coming.

I was actually walking through Macy’s over the weekend and saw a sales person helping a couple register. The first thing I heard her say was, “well we are working out kinks in the registry, but things have been going better…” So You are not alone in your frustration.

Macy’s is terrible. It is about the only department store in the town where I live, so I applied for a card. Along with my NEW card, they also revived the account number for a Foley’s card I had years ago - and had cancelled years ago. And then the only sent me the bill for the old account number, which had a zero balance (well, duh, it was 6 years since I had used it) and a whole series of nasty notes about my delinquent account. Calling customer service resulted in an HOUR on the phone, including a crazy past address quiz to “confirm my identity” (what happened to social security numbers?) and their contention that I didn’t seem to be me. I occasionally shop in the men’s section for FI or my dad, but I mail order my stuff from Nordstrom. Now that’s a store. Wish they had a housewares department.

SO TRUE! In the past two months I’ve had to replace my flatware, bedding, knife set, and a couple of platters.

Another negative is that it seems like some guests (mostly older ones who probably don’t make many online purchases) are missing the tiny button that asks you to change the shipping address and things are getting sent to my house! This was okay for some items, but others were shipped in their original boxes and now I know exactly what I’ve gotten. No fun!

When I called the Wedding Channel customer service to ask them to completely remove my address in order to prevent future mishaps, they told me they were unable to do so. It’s like, it’s MY address, and MY registry. Shouldn’t I be able to decide if things are sent here?

We just (hesitantly) registered there on Sunday and I am already experiencing the same problems! They really need to get it together. Now that I know I am not alone, maybe I’ll just close it and find an alternative. Sigh.

We registered at Macy’s last month, but were advised not to really fill out our registry until March, because apparently Macy’s turns over their entire stock in February. So a whole lot of stuff gets discontinued and replaced with new things. So we just put a couple things on there and plan to go back in March to really register. That’s fine with us because our wedding isn’t until the fall but obviously it can’t help you. It might explain why you’re having such trouble, though. Maybe it will get better in March?

Unfortunately, I feel your pain. I’m STILL waiting on items that my guests purchased over five months ago. The kicker, that I found out recently, is that now that we’re purchasing leftover china pieces on the registry, if they don’t have them in-stock in the store (which, they never do with a milllion china patterns and parts), you have to pay shipping. Even though it’s their fault it’s not there. And they can’t have it shipped to any store. What a delightful policy!

I hear ya! My registry has been deleted or replaced with an old registry twice in just a couple of months. I’ve been getting this funky error message under availability for all of my items. Suggestion - print out a updated copy of your registry in case you have to reenter it all!

Ugh, sounds frustrating. You take the time to carefully whittle down your choices, only to have them tell you you need “replacement options”?? Boo, Macy’s!

I heard that Macy’s is doing very poorly this year. The flagship Herald Square store in NYC may close and go condo. Can you imagine? Macy’s is like a landmark. I avoided Macy’s and picked Williams Sonoma and other smaller places instead. Our china is MUCH cheaper at Macys than where we registered for it (at Bloomingdales) but the service there was superior and their display was stunning. Macys is so gloomly as of late. Can you switch or find your items somewhere else?

I had a bad experience w/Macy’s too. My friend was registered there, and I ordered an item online, and got an email saying it was backordered, and that I would need to re-order in order to get the item. So I ordered a different item instead, only to receive another email saying that the first “backordered” item was on its way to my friend. I called customer service and tried to cancel either one of the items, but they couldn’t do it. So I had to ask my friend to return one of the items that got sent to them, which was not nice!!! Not recommended!

I also raise my hand to “who’s wishing the on-line selection actually matched the in-store selection”. Especially for those things when you know there are 3 sizes or 3 colors but the website only offers you 2 choices. What gives? I was trying to add a pasta fork to our set of cooking utensils… all the other utensils are there to be chosen but not the matching pasta fork even though it’s in the picture along with the set. sigh. I hope I have patience if I get the “you must replace these items” email.

Kohl’s is JUST as bad. My fiancé and I picked out some awesome dishes but every time I clicked on them online it would say “Unavailable” (yet they’d be at the store). My future Mother-in-Law knew I really wanted the dishes and that I was worried so she bought me 4 dinner plates & 4 salad plates but before purchasing not only did Kohl’s tell her “We don’t have boxes for those” but they also told her “That style is new, it’s not going anywhere”. Um, then how come it now appears on my registry as clearance? I’ve had to run to 4 different Kohl’s to see if I can get my dishes (I still need some bowls and mugs). And don’t even get me started how the majority of my items AND my future sister-in-law’s items (she’s getting married this April) are clearanced out & unavailable. I now only have the Food Network/Kohl’s exclusive merchandise on my registry and I will start a Bed, Bath, & Beyond registry.

Macy’s online registry stinks because of their ridiculous “Wedding Channel” tie-in. I only used it to register for some pieces of my china pattern, so I didn’t have problems with them running out of stuff, but the website is terrible. I just found out, post-wedding, that their regular site has customer reviews, but the registry site doesn’t show them! I blogged about my various registry issues, but I think Macy’s was the worst.

I’m actually having more probs with my W-S registry than Macy’s — EVERYTHING is on back order! For months! I don’t understand — these items seemed to be in ample supply when I registered for them in the store last month. My shower is coming up and most of my shower-priced items are at W-S. A note to Williams-Sonoma: re-stock, please!!

I had to register at Macy’s - purely out of loyalty to Martha…

On a side note…can you please tell me the vase you have pictured first? I’d love to add it to my registry - she’s a beaut!

For the fifth time, I just hung up with yet another polite but unfortunately all too unaware Macy’s Wedding Channel customer service rep. I don’t understand why a company as “reputable” and as large as Macy’s can’t get their online system to function. Period. Just function. It doesn’t have to have bells and whistles: Just work. Correctly. And you’re right Miss P, Why so many backorders? Backorder status should be noted as the product’s current status BEFORE you click add it to the registry! The ONLY saving grace of my Macy’s/WC registry is the fact that they use biodegradable peanuts and attempt to reduce packaging. If only they took such care and consideration into troubleshooting service problems! Bah! Frustrated in Brooklyn!
