They’re Not Just For Christmas

February 19th, 2008 @ 12:42 pm by Mrs. Peacock

When I saw this wreath in an old issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, I knew I had to have it or something like it.

I have always been a big fan of a pretty wreath, but you do need to be careful not to stray too far into “something my grandma made” category. I think you do this by sticking to one flower/leaf/branch and only varying from that in the color of that flower.

I really wanted white floral wreaths hanging from the huge, gorgeous front doors of our church. Unfortunately because it is an older church (built in 1918) and is beloved by its parish, they have very strict rules about how you can decorate within the church. Since it is generally pretty ornate, I am not too worried about having large floral displays near the front doors or the altar. I can, carefully, hang something from the end of the pews. A wreath may be that very something!

This is pretty cost prohibitive, however, since a wreath of stephanotis or roses from my florist can cost around $80 each. I would need quite a few on the pew ends. I need to give it more thought, but I don’t think that I have the willpower to make them myself the week of the wedding. This got me thinking of a Plan B. What flower is pretty inexpensive and comes in a large bloom idea for a wreath?

Thank you, Mrs. Strawberry!

Yes, that is baby’s breath. Yes, I normally rip baby’s breath out of bouquets as soon as they are handed to me. It ranks right up there with the dreaded carnation (no offense to carnation lovers!). But… doesn’t it being on its own make a big difference? I think it has a vintage feel in its little blooms with lots of texture and movement. It’s white, which is key when the church has 1.2 million colors painted in the frescoes. Oh yeah, and it’s dirt cheap compared to roses or stephanotis.

Has anyone used a wreath in their wedding? Any other creative ways to make it happen? Also, if I made these myself with some of that green foam stuff, how long would it last?

I love wreaths! Those are gorgeous, especially the first one. I want to make a dried one with our initial sometime :)

Make sure you use Oasis foam or aquafoam, which is meant to hold water. Don’t use the foam for silk flowers, unless you want the baby’s breath to die. If you can keep the floral foam nice and wet (use luke-warm, not cold water) through the night before the wedding, then hang them up and let them drip dry a bit, they should last through the day of the wedding with no problem! That way, you could make the wreaths a few days before the wedding.

These are all so beautiful! You found some great one!

We’ve asked our florist to make a wreath for our sweetheart table, too…I’m a bit concerned about how it will look/hang, but I’m going to trust her!

I’m actually doing wreaths in the shape of a W for my soon to be last name. They are going to in white mini mums and held up by pale yellow ribbon. Mums are cute and not expensive. I was orginally going to use the lime green mums but my colors for the wedding changed to a paler green.

Hey Miss Peacock! I’m doing the same sort of idea with hydrangeas. I’m going to order and make them in September since that is when the color is I want is in season. I’m going make them with a wire form. and tie them with ribbon to the pews. I’m also going to make some initials for the doors. Love it! If you need any help, let me know. Since I may need some company/motivation to get me through making so many. haha. Good Luck!

I’m actually leaning toward having a baby’s breath bouquet. The Knot has a great picture of one. I think by itself baby’s breath is very natural and fresh looking. I didn’t even think to use it for a wreath though - looks like I might have another project on my hands.

It looks beautiful, but I remember hearing somewhere that large quantities of baby’s breath can smell bad. Apparently you just can’t tell when there are only a few sprigs, but it’s obvious when you’ve got a big bunch. I’d buy some and see, or ask your florist, just in case.

I make babies breath bouquets all the time…the one thing to consider is that they are considerably fragrant…especially when fresh!

Love the wreaths :)
I’m making wreaths out of christmas ornaments for my wedding as it is in December. A different, and long-lasting take on the wreath idea.

Agreed: baby’s breath on its own is very vintage and super cute. Thanks for reminding me to add this to my ” to do” list. :)

Love the wreaths! I’m having them made in our initials out of carnation blooms. Photos in my bio of examples. I think they’re all SO sweet. :)
