About Mrs. Peacock

My Right Hand

February 20th, 2008 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Peacock

I love, love, love my engagement ring. Mr. Peacock spent months with a jeweler trying to create the perfect ring for me. Although he did this all on his own and the ring itself was a surprise, I did share some photos with him. Most looked very much like the Tiffany Legacy ring.

He did it very well, with a little more vintage flair in the setting.

The one “problem” that I have found in my ring is the back of the setting.

Because of that beautiful basket shape along the side, I can’t buy a flat band to wear as my wedding band. The two won’t lie flush together, which means that the engagement ring gets lazy and ends up picking a side and resting on it. I love how he designed the entire ring and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world, which means that I need to come up with another option for my band. I would rather not have something custom made to fit around the ring because I could see myself wearing the band on its own- when we are traveling through Europe, when I get super crafty or when we have kids and I am cleaning poopy diapers. A friend of mine wears her engagement ring on her right had and her wedding band on her left and I have always admired it. She has some pretty sparkles on both hands!

While I was in Kansas City visiting my college roommate last weekend, we stopped by Tivol in the Plaza. (By the way, KCMO readers or visitors, I LOVE the Plaza. Anthropologie, Paper Source and Lill all in one pretty place? Fantastic! The home department of Halls is also very impressive.) Her husband purchased her gorgeous engagement ring and matching band at the store and so they were kind enough to give our rings a scrub while we wandered around. I fell in love- hard- for Penny Preville. If you haven’t been to her site or seen her jewelry before, I highly recommend going. Everything, including the delicate little features, are fabulously vintage. This little band in particular caught my eye.

They had three of them displayed together, stacked one on top of the other. It looked like antique jewelry, which is exactly what I had been hoping for. Granted, Penny’s jewelry is quite expensive and I am sure that three of those little beauties would break our budget. I am hoping to either find or ask a jeweler to make something similar. As weird as it looks right now, I think the engagement ring on the right hand is my solution and I am actually pretty excited about it.

Has anyone else had a similar problem with their engagement ring and wedding band not fitting together? What was your solution?

WOW, I LOVE that band!! So gorgeous!

I wear my e-ring on my right hand half the time. I like to switch things up, keep things exciting, HAHA =)

I will have seperate rings because my wedding band and engagement ring do not fit together. I will have a similar style to yours, atually:) http://www.heartsonfire.com/#/us/en-us/diamond-collection/view-details.php?item_id=3354&item_name=Significance%20Solitaire&style_name=SigBrdR&type_id=1&type_name=Rings&subtype_id=1&subtype_name=Engagement%20Rings

For financial reasons (read, I did not want my FI to finance a ring for me), I am actually wearing a sapphire/diamond channel set band (kind of like this http://www.sndgems.com/platinumsapphirediamondringsp.htm) that I plan to wear on my right hand after our wedding. I love the look of two sparkly fingers:)

Mine is very, very similar to yours, also custom, but my band won’t sit flush either. I’m choosing to wear them both on my left hand anyway. The gap doesn’t bother me, and it’s more apparent that I have two bands on. Plus, having a straight band instead of a curved one means I can wear it by itself.

I have the same prob. and like you, I didn’t quite fancy the idea of having one made to fit my ring (even though the designer does make one to fit this style) because I might want to wear it solo. So I have been contemplating doing the right hand thing, too.

That band is lovely, but I wonder (and I know this may sound a little bit crazy): your e-ring is SPECTACULAR. Would you ever consider just wearing it alone and not getting a band? I mean, it could be an engagement ring AND a wedding ring, couldn’t it? I mean, it really seems like a very special piece, on its own!

I love your ring and your prospective band. Both gorgeous! You/FI have great taste!

I have a similar situation. My ring will look like this: http://www.heartsonfire.com/#/us/en-us/diamond-collection/view-details.php?item_id=3354&item_name=Significance%20Solitaire&style_name=SigBrdR&type_id=1&type_name=Rings&subtype_id=1&subtype_name=Engagement%20Rings (Which is really similar to yours, actually, basket style setting and all).

Because I didn’t want my FI to finance a ring, I suggested that it would be fine with me if he bought me a band first, especially because I feel more comfortable with a band in my line of work(I work as a quasi-administrator at an inner-city school with a 90% poverty rate). It looks something like this:http://www.sndgems.com/platinumsapphirediamondringsp.htm.

I love the look of a ring on both hands, and the way that you can incorporate some of the same elements (both of my rings will have filigree detail), but have two somewhat different “looks” depending on your mood! I’m with Mrs. Emerald. Switch it up:)

My e-ring also won’t allow a band to sit flush. What I actually want is to continue wearing my e-ring on my left hand and wear my wedding band on my right. But that’s not going to happen - my fiance hates that idea. But ideally that’s what I’d want to do - I feel really weird when I put it on my right hand…the stone is big and it feels odd/awkward to me. I would feel more natural with a band on my right hand. But I also want my band to be able to be worn alone, so alas…I’ll probably be doing the right hand for the e-ring.

I had a very similar problem — my engagement ring is antique and the setting is very low giving me the same issue — it wouldn’t sit flush with any regular wedding band. We had my wedding ring custom made to fit with my e-ring BUT a big condition for me was that the design of the wedding ring would stand alone without the e-ring and not look like it was missing something. I am THRILLED with the result. You can see my most about it here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/07/13/a-ring-is-born/

i have an antique style ring, but my setting is higher, so i will be able to get a band that sits flush…….but I hadn’t seen anything i liked, until i clicked the link you provided for Penny Preville….

Thank you soooo much!

clearly, this is not within our budget, BUT, i now have a picture of what i want and can search in earnest.

Before, i hadn’t even seen pictures of what i wanted.

I have the same problem. I actually like that they’re not flush. However, my problem is that my wedding band is an eternity band with a band setting (so the diamonds are bound vertically with a bar, so they are open on the sides. this is a problem in the fact that my diamonds on the band are rubbing away at the prongs on my E-ring!
I’m not sure what to do–any ideas bee readers??
I don’t want to sauter them together since I still want to be able to wear them separately. I have a feeling I’ll have to redesign my e-ring (again!).

Petunia- I have thought about that, but I can really see myself just wearing my band for whatever reason… I need to think about that.

RR- I also prefer my e-ring on my left hand. It looks awkward on my right, although I bet that is just because I am used to seeing it on my left. Maybe we will get used to it?

Onion- Your band is gorgeous! It really does work well on its own.

GetMarried- that was my thought too! This was the first band that I have gotten excited about. The fun thing is that we could just get one this year, maybe another for an anniversary, etc.

Miss Peacock:

Hate to step on toes but I have been looking all over for the info on the web…can you give me a ballpark price on that band? It is beautiful…i am looking at it for a right hand ring, maybe stacked.

Thanks!

My ring is very similar to yours and from the start of our engagement I have constantly been asked how I can wear a band with it. My solution is to have the same designer my FI created the ring with, design a custom band that dips in the appropriate places. I admit I don’t love this idea, but I plan to have the diamonds in the band wrap around the back so I can always spin the straight side around to wear the band alone.

I am so sorry, I was too afraid to ask! My wedding band budget itsy bitsy and I really like our jeweler in Chicago- I knew I wasn’t going to buy from PP.

I am sure you could call Tivol and ask!

Same here. I was very disappointed when we went back to the original jeweler to see the ‘matching’ band and found out there wasn’t one. What? I thought all e-rings had a matching band. Guess not.

They tried to tell me everyone else who bought my ring bought a channel set band to go with it. Which in my opinion looks silly with it! It doesn’t sit right - plus it’s just way to blingy.

So the search began. I did find a channel set band in a store that had a curve to it (not sure the term) which very snuggly set up against my ring. Again I didn’t want the extra bling - but it gave me the idea for the ring I wanted.

I ordered a couple plain bands out of a book at another jeweler that had a curve in them. One worked and one didn’t. (Different degrees of curve) It’s perfect. And the curve is very slight - so if I just want to wear the band it doesn’t look funny.

Since my descriptions are so great…. I figured I’d attach a pic so you get what I mean…. of course in the pic the rings are separated a little - but you see how the shape matches….

I have an antique ring (it was my grandmother’s and is from the late 1940s!) and encountered the same problem. I actually found a band not disimilar to the one above and I wear both my e-ring and band on the same finger. Though not flush, the delicate band of diamonds (only halfway around) complements the e-ring nicely and they look fantastic together. I get many compliments on them as a set, even though they are obviously note a set. Just something to think about - you might be able to wear both on the same finger though not flush.

My ring is very similar to yours and I have the same problem. I have decided that I will continue to wear my engagement ring on my left hand and get a band for my right hand. I don’t want to wear the engagement ring on my right hand because I am afraid it will get in the way and experience more wear and tear.

I have a friend who wears her engagement ring on her right hand and two stacked wedding bands on her left (one she got on their wedding day, the other for their first born child). It’s sentimental and looks fantastic, and that way you can buy one now and one a few years down the road!

First of all, they have a wedding band very similar to the Penny Preville one you like at Dimend Scaasi in the Maller’s Building on Jeweler’s Row in the Loop.

http://www.dimendscaasi.com/wedding/forHer/pages/engPR185.asp

Secondly, my e-ring won’t allow a band to fit flush either… so I’m having an eternity band designed to fit the contours of my ring. If I ever want to wear the band alone, I can turn it 180 degrees and it’ll be like a normal band with the curved part on the inside of my hand.

Mine is also similar to yours, so I am wearing my engagement ring on my left hand and another vintage looking band as my wedding band stacked with my great grandmothers sapphire on my right. I love it! And most people see my engagement ring and comment about how it is plenty on its own and why would I want another band? For my other hand, I say!

I too want to be able to wear my band alone for the situations you mentioned, but my engagement ring won’t allow for a straight band. That’s why I’ve decided to have one custom-made to fit, but also purchase a simple, white gold, understated band to wear while traveling, at the beach, on the boat, changing diapers, etc. HOWEVER, I am going to have the simple band with me at the altar, blessed along with the other rings, so it’s still got the sentimental wedding-ring value, and not just some band I bought after the fact.

I’m planning on wearing my e-ring by itself unless there’s a reason I don’t want to wear it (then I’ll wear my plain wedding band instead). It’s a perfect wedding band on its own and it would look odd with another band next to it.

i also had a basket setting for my solitaire with baguette sidestones. my jeweler cut into the setting to make my three- baguette wedding ring sit next to the e-ring… but it never quite fit. i was very unhappy with the teeny tiny gap (i’d so much rather have a big, obvious one!) so we eventually took the baguettes and made a beautiful five-stone wedding band which i wear on my left hand, and put my center e-ring stone into a plain solitaire which i wear on my right hand with my 1 year anniversary band (they DO sit next to each other).

i do get some questions about “why do you wear your e-ring on your right hand?” but i just love that my wedding band sits alone on my left hand to shine (literally!) because it’s really gorgeous. plus if i upgrade my e-ring later, i can keep the same wedding ring, for the rest of my life. it’s quite blingy. :)

I am in the same situation as you as well. My ring has a basket setting and was customized. I was really upset when I first realized I wouldn’t be able to find a band that sat flat againt the ring, but after we picked out my new band, and i fell in love with it just as much as my ering, I just don’t mind. I think it will be fun to have a ring one each hand : )

I had a bride last year have a similar ring (center stone was a solitare though) and they decided to forgo the wedding band completely. She said that down the line when they have the extra money in the budget at an anniversary they will find her a really nice sized band and will flip her engagement ring to her right hand but at the moment they a) didn’t have the money for what she wanted and b) she loved her e-ring so much that she wasn’t ready to put it on her right hand yet.

You’ll find something that works for you. Just remember it’s not a do-or-die situation right now. You can always use the ering until you guys find something perfect even if it is after the wedding!

I might not be understanding “basket” but I think my ring has that too. But my diamond is set pretty high, so the bump out is not too severe. The setting for the e-ring is sort of simple when viewing from above, but really vintage and intricate from the sides. I thought the gap between the rings would bug me but I just love wearing my eternity wedding band next to it. Also, one thing to think about, my wedding band is higher in the middle and the tiny diamonds are pave set in two rows on either side of the ridge. This allows the ring to be way more sparkly from alla ngles and I think it looks better for a grouping where the rings don’t exactly lie flush.
I don’t know how to insert the link, but the e-ring is tacori 2501RD7 (tacori.com) and the wedding band is tacori 2520ET.

I don’t have any good advice for you since I asked our ring designer to make sure the basket was high enough to be able to fit a band flush to it… but I did want to say that your e-ring looks a LOT like mine!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2070/2218601326_d14d255024_m.jpg

I did a double take- it’s nearly the same from the ‘top’ view except mine is sapphire! you’ve got good taste! ;)
