Will You Marry… Us?

February 20th, 2008 @ 12:12 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Ahh, it’s good to be back! During my hiatus, I almost forgot how much I love contributing to Weddingbee! I figured it was time for a few choice vendor reviews, some of which might be helpful to Chicago-area brides. Let’s start with one of our most important vendors, our officiant Terry Brady, and the process we went through to create a ceremony that was truly “us”.

To be honest, Mr. E and I are not particularly religious people. So in looking for an officiant, our criteria was to find someone who we “clicked” with, who would allow us to personalize our ceremony… and who did not cost an arm and a leg. I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand how someone can charge $700-$800 for performing a 30 minute (or less) ceremony! I saw a positive recommendation for Terry Brady on the local Knot message board, gave him a call, and set up a meeting. Turns out, there was no need to look any further, we booked him the very day we met! Not only did we hit it off, but when he read me a sample of his ceremony, I got chills down my spine and tears in my eyes. (On a side note, we met in a hotel lobby where there happened to be a Furry Fandom convention going on and people dressed in animal costumes wandering all around us. It was… distracting to say the least).

Through the course of about 7 months, we corresponded mainly through email along with 2 or 3 in-person meetings. We started with his templated ceremony, and began to go through it with a fine-tooth comb. We must have bounced at least 7 or 8 rounds of revisions back and forth via email before we settled on the *perfect* ceremony. He confessed that he had never worked so long and so hard on anyone’s ceremony before, which I took as a compliment because I wanted it to be a very personalized. I also have to say that after meeting with him so many times, we developed a sense of rapport and were truly happy to have him marry us.

Mr. E and I initially wanted to write our own vows, but were having a hard time verbalizing what we wanted to say. So instead, Terry introduced us to the concept of “personal words”. Instead of writing our “promises”, we wrote about our love for the other, and our hopes for the future and we exchanged these words right before we recited our traditional vows. It was the emotional highlight of our ceremony, with tears all around (and we have video footage of Terry himself wiping away some tears!). If this is an element you are considering for your ceremony, I highly recommend it!

Lastly, Terry is quite reasonable for the Chicago area. His fee is under $500 and includes meetings (as many as deemed necessary by both parties), attendance at the rehearsal, and of course the ceremony.

How hands-on are you ladies in regards to developing your ceremony? Does your officiant allow you a say in the process?

Yea! You are back. I would love to hear your review of the Hyatt Lodge. We have narrowed our venues down to 3 and the Hyatt is one of them.

We did something very similar with our officiant, and everyone raved about our ceremony all night. Many, many guests said they teared up. After listening to all the feedback, I have to say that nothing makes your wedding more personal and memorable than a personalized ceremony. No one commented on the favors, the flowers, the table cards, the decorations, or anything else I did to make the wedding unique. But everyone raved about the ceremony. It wasn’t something we wanted to spend money on, but it turned out to be the best $800 we spent, by a long, long shot.

We are on our 6th!! choice for officiant now, and it may be working. We have only spoken over the phone, but have a meeting on the 28th. Everyone else, while perfectly nice, just didn’t seem that interested in us and our wedding. And not to be self-centered, but if you can’t show some interest in who we are I don’t want you marrying us! FI thought I was crazy, having talked to our latest choice (and his wife) on the phone several times now, he also agrees there is a rapport already that we didn’t have with anyone else so far. And yes, he will be asking us for our input to constructing the ceremony.

Silly me, I actually never asked what he charges. I hope there are no unpleasant surprises there. He is a retired pastor, so I just assumed that we would pay him about what we would a regular pastor. Guess I better figure that out (generally about $300 in our area, I think).

Thank you so much for posting this!!! We’ve been looking for an officiant. Incidentally, we decided to get married in my hometown, Aurora, instead of wedding central south florida to save some money (hey, we want to buy a home eventually!)

We’ve gone through several, compared pricing and just haven’t found THE ONE yet. I’ll check out Terry! Thanks again!

We used Terry for our wedding as well. He is everything Mrs. Emerald says he is. We loved working with him and he made us feel at ease. We are so thankful we found him.

We had my bonus mom marry us, and it was very personal. She received books on ceremonies from other areas of the world and so we sat down with those books and chose bits and pieces that said what we wanted to say. It took three or four revision before it was us, and we loved it.

Oh hey…since you’re a Chicago bee, you can give Terry some love on Project Wedding. They have a vendor review portion kind of like the Knot. http://www.projectwedding.com/vendor/show/10015513

Because FH and I are getting married in the Catholic church, our ceremony has some stipulations. But couples are still allowed to personalize the readings and some other bits, it just isn’t as freeform as if we were getting hitched outwith the church. We’re doing the whole hour-plus mass, too. But the plus side of that is that we can involve more people that can’t be part of our wedding party as readers.

As for the officiant, we didn’t have a whole lot of choice, because we’re getting married in FH’s church, but the priest that is marrying us is a wonderful person, and our (multiple) meetings with him have been nothing but fun.
