Commence Work: Project Egg

February 21st, 2008 @ 6:48 pm by Mrs. Cream Puff

Now that it’s Easter-time, I can start working on the favors for our wedding. What does Easter have to do with it, you might ask? Well, my friends, I will tell you.

Our favors are my all-time favorite candy, Cadbury Mini Eggs (not to be confused with the big Cadbury Creme Eggs). On our first date, Mr. Cream Puff brought me a one-pound bag of these little delicacies because he knew they were my favorite. I look forward to them all year round! Because I am of the opinion that favors need to be edible (I love sweet things and as a guest have no desire to own a heart-shaped bottle-stopper or a silver wedding bell), mini-eggs were a no-brainer.

I bought some gift boxes online last week and got to work last night when I discovered the first bags of mini eggs coming out at our local Safeway. I carefully counted the number of mini eggs that I thought looked good in the box, then calculated how many we would need for 15o boxes (this is a somewhat arbitrary number, as I obviously have no idea how many people will RSVP “yes”). We are going to need over SIXTY POUNDS of mini eggs for these favors! Holy crap!! Shop early, shop often, I say–after all, these babies are only around for a couple of months!

On my exciting discount day at Paper Source, I bought six different colors of satin ribbon for the boxes. I also plan to buy some vellum to make the boxes fancier (the vellum pictured below is a piece of scrap vellum I had lying around–I don’t have the real stuff yet), and close the vellum with a sticker (which I don’t have yet, either–below is just a sample I made). Then I’ll put a little card in to explain the significance of the mini eggs.

BEHOLD! My favors!

These are great favors; I love when it’s significant to the couple. The story is a sweet touch. And since we’re on the subject of all time favorite candies…mine is Applets and Cotlets. Dang good. I wanted to use them for my wedding, but their a little dusty, so we went with Frangos.

Cadbury mini eggs rock. FI bought a bag last night, and I ended up feeling quite sick.

Angel - I have loved Aplets and Cotlets ever since touring the factory in grade school.

We are having chocolate coated almond toffee, made by a local company. They say they get lots of requests for truffles for favors, but never for the toffee. Maybe thats also a dust issue… the almond chips can be a little messy.

I’m in the same boat - only I need Easter M&Ms - they come in my wedding colors this time of year and after doing the math, it’ll be cheaper to buy them instead of ordering them online!

ooh I love mini eggs! I thought about them too (as little eggs in nests). but decided against them because chocolate does go ’stale’ - and your wedding is still several months away. I love your mock-up, but I would think about it - I know the Hallowe’en candy I stash is always that disgusting crumbling pale brown by Christmas time…. :(

those are soooo cute! ^_^ I wish I’d thought of having a favorite sweet as a favor. But, I’d be in the same boat, since it’s seasonal. Darn you, Little Debbie, for only having Pumpkin Delights in the late fall!!!

Cute, cute, cute. And you can store chocolate in the freezer, if you are worrried about them going stale. :)

I love Cadbury mini eggs, too. It’s a very underrated Easter candy.

I love the sticker and the idea of putting the story about them in the boxes!

I know this is probably gonna turn some stomachs - but I used to work at a candy store doing purchasing, so I know the “shelf life” of candy pretty much 1st hand…. No worries about the candy going bad - most likely they stores got their Easter shipments back a few months ago - and the candy was probably made a month or so before that - and you can almost always carry forward any unused candy forward for quite a few months, especially if there is a shell. So everything should be ok for your wedding day :)

I love those delicious little eggs… And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the ribbons!

This. Is. So. Hot.

Seriously woman, you are mad. And the mini eggs rock my world. I just discovered that they put them out in dark chocolate too a couple of years ago. YUM O.

With the hard candy shell, those suckers should last a long time I think. I dont power through candy very fast since I’m not a huge fan, so sometimes I have a bag of MandMs for like, 6 months, and they dont really change, so long as you keep them in a decently cool but dry temperature.

OMG! I love everything Cadbury! The eggs are my favorite candy, too! I love that you’re doing this! If you need an official favor-tester, I can do that for you. Seriously.

They sell the mini-eggs at Christmas too, but they call them ornaments. My brother and I always have to buy the first bags we see and send them to one another.

Miss Shortcake–luckily I have experience in this because I usually buy bags and bags and save them all year round. As long as they stay in the bag, they’re good for MONTHS. We’re not going to put them in the boxes until a week before the wedding. Jennyt is totally right! hahaha.

Cadbury eggs are my favorite. I just discovered the christmas variety a couple of years ago, but there’s something about the egg shape that makes them way better. I don’t know what’s up with that.
