Commence Work: Project Egg

February 21st, 2008 @ 6:48 pm by Mrs. Cream Puff

Now that it’s Easter-time, I can start working on the favors for our wedding. What does Easter have to do with it, you might ask? Well, my friends, I will tell you.

Our favors are my all-time favorite candy, Cadbury Mini Eggs (not to be confused with the big Cadbury Creme Eggs). On our first date, Mr. Cream Puff brought me a one-pound bag of these little delicacies because he knew they were my favorite. I look forward to them all year round! Because I am of the opinion that favors need to be edible (I love sweet things and as a guest have no desire to own a heart-shaped bottle-stopper or a silver wedding bell), mini-eggs were a no-brainer.

I bought some gift boxes online last week and got to work last night when I discovered the first bags of mini eggs coming out at our local Safeway. I carefully counted the number of mini eggs that I thought looked good in the box, then calculated how many we would need for 15o boxes (this is a somewhat arbitrary number, as I obviously have no idea how many people will RSVP “yes”). We are going to need over SIXTY POUNDS of mini eggs for these favors! Holy crap!! Shop early, shop often, I say–after all, these babies are only around for a couple of months!

On my exciting discount day at Paper Source, I bought six different colors of satin ribbon for the boxes. I also plan to buy some vellum to make the boxes fancier (the vellum pictured below is a piece of scrap vellum I had lying around–I don’t have the real stuff yet), and close the vellum with a sticker (which I don’t have yet, either–below is just a sample I made). Then I’ll put a little card in to explain the significance of the mini eggs.

BEHOLD! My favors!

These are great favors; I love when it’s significant to the couple. The story is a sweet touch. And since we’re on the subject of all time favorite candies…mine is Applets and Cotlets. Dang good. I wanted to use them for my wedding, but their a little dusty, so we went with Frangos.

Cadbury mini eggs rock. FI bought a bag last night, and I ended up feeling quite sick.

Angel - I have loved Aplets and Cotlets ever since touring the factory in grade school.

We are having chocolate coated almond toffee, made by a local company. They say they get lots of requests for truffles for favors, but never for the toffee. Maybe thats also a dust issue… the almond chips can be a little messy.

I’m in the same boat - only I need Easter M&Ms - they come in my wedding colors this time of year and after doing the math, it’ll be cheaper to buy them instead of ordering them online!

ooh I love mini eggs! I thought about them too (as little eggs in nests). but decided against them because chocolate does go ’stale’ - and your wedding is still several months away. I love your mock-up, but I would think about it - I know the Hallowe’en candy I stash is always that disgusting crumbling pale brown by Christmas time…. :(

AlmostAVrazel says:

those are soooo cute! ^_^ I wish I’d thought of having a favorite sweet as a favor. But, I’d be in the same boat, since it’s seasonal. Darn you, Little Debbie, for only having Pumpkin Delights in the late fall!!!

OMG i love the cadbury eggs! I think that’s a great idea.

Cute, cute, cute. And you can store chocolate in the freezer, if you are worrried about them going stale. :)

I love Cadbury mini eggs, too. It’s a very underrated Easter candy.

I love the sticker and the idea of putting the story about them in the boxes!

I know this is probably gonna turn some stomachs - but I used to work at a candy store doing purchasing, so I know the “shelf life” of candy pretty much 1st hand…. No worries about the candy going bad - most likely they stores got their Easter shipments back a few months ago - and the candy was probably made a month or so before that - and you can almost always carry forward any unused candy forward for quite a few months, especially if there is a shell. So everything should be ok for your wedding day :)

I love those delicious little eggs… And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the ribbons!

This. Is. So. Hot.

Seriously woman, you are mad. And the mini eggs rock my world. I just discovered that they put them out in dark chocolate too a couple of years ago. YUM O.

With the hard candy shell, those suckers should last a long time I think. I dont power through candy very fast since I’m not a huge fan, so sometimes I have a bag of MandMs for like, 6 months, and they dont really change, so long as you keep them in a decently cool but dry temperature.

you picked my favorite candy of all time!!! Ya know what we do is wait till the day AFTER Easter and hit up Wallgreens and they always have the Easter candy half off!

OMG! I love everything Cadbury! The eggs are my favorite candy, too! I love that you’re doing this! If you need an official favor-tester, I can do that for you. Seriously.

betting_im_not says:

did you make the stickers? they are adorable! they look a lot like the work of one of my favorite artists…kurt halsey!

valeqt says:

They sell the mini-eggs at Christmas too, but they call them ornaments. My brother and I always have to buy the first bags we see and send them to one another.

Totally cute! Much nicer looking than the avergae packaged favor.

Miss Cream Puff says:

Miss Shortcake–luckily I have experience in this because I usually buy bags and bags and save them all year round. As long as they stay in the bag, they’re good for MONTHS. We’re not going to put them in the boxes until a week before the wedding. Jennyt is totally right! hahaha.

Cadbury eggs are my favorite. I just discovered the christmas variety a couple of years ago, but there’s something about the egg shape that makes them way better. I don’t know what’s up with that.

Oh, and PS–THANK you for the compliments!

I know I already commented, but seriously Miss C - this multi-colored-scheme is really blowing my freaking mind. Youre pulling it off most excellently. I love it.

Miss Cream Puff, those ribbon colors look almost as delicious as the mini eggs. Great job!

erika says:

Those are very nice bows!! Wanna teach us how?

24.
Ellie says:

The sticker looks like a Kurt Halsey drawing - but its too small to know for sure. Is it?

25.
mrsmek says:

I think the picture you drew for the sticker is so wonderful! I’d smile if I opened up the box to that!

I remember reading that you are starting your own illustration biz…Are you considering wedding projects? The potential of customized cartoons/illustrations for brides-to-be (favors, invitations, stds, etc)…you’d be busy non-stop!

Really cute.

Miss Cream Puff says:

Ellie & bettingimnot–wow, you have a good eye–I didn’t say anything because I thought that would just be a blur! Before I started drawing myself, I thought I’d use this as our wedding theme. But now I’m planning to draw something myself, I’ve just been way too freaking busy to do it yet. That’s why that’s just a sample. I have yet to do the drawing and yet to pick the vellum. And yet to come up with the little story for the inside. It’s so funny–people keep saying I’m way ahead of things but sometimes I don’t feel that way! Although…I AM a virgo. haha. Just realized that was a major tangent.

erika–they’re actually just regular bows! I think they just look extra nice because they’re wide ribbons–they’re 1.5 inches across, so they look big and full. Oh, but I DID snip the bottoms so they’re in a V shape. If you just fold the bottoms over lengthwise and snip, it ends up to be a V. Start somewhere on the folded part and end at the bottom, opposite edge. Wow, I think that might not make sense. Tell me if I need to do a pictorial!

Penguin–you endlessly crack me up.

Miss Cream Puff says:

Oh, and PS–it’s not a sticker yet. I’ll do a tutorial on that when I figure out how I’m going to do it. Right now it’s a piece of paper with tape on the back. I’m planning to either use sticker paper that I feed through my printer, or a xyron machine. Either way, I’ll keep you updated!

bride2be says:

So cute! Where did you purchase the boxes at?

31.
Bee Icon
Miss Cream Puff says:

I got the boxes from Paper Mart, online (I think it’s papermart.com). I originally bought colored boxes, but they didn’t match one another. The return process was a major hassle. I would recommend them for quality and speed of shipping, but the return really sucked.

32.
bride2be says:

That’s where I was looking for boxes too :) When you say the colored ones didn’t match, do you mean there were several variations of the same color? I was considering ordering the oatmeal colored ones so I hope it’s not the case with those too! The lady at Paper Mart did mention that you can return things within 30 days; however, they check everything out to make sure you didn’t damage it. I hate the fact that you can’t order samples :( I don’t want to have to order a case of 100 and then have a problem and have to deal with the return process. What size did you order, by the way?

I love them! Your wedding is going to be beautiful!!!

I must find me some cadbury mini eggie thingies… never had them!

parkerposie says:

I just want to know what size of box did you use? I have 3×3x3 and i just bought 30 lbs of eggs. I need to make 160 (aprox) boxes..I hope I have enough!

36.
Bee Icon
Miss Cream Puff says:

Hey parkerposie,
I’m not sure you have enough. :-/ My boxes are 3.5 x 3.5 x 2, and they aren’t filled up all the way. I bought 60 pounds for 150 boxes. Run out to try to get more before they’re gone!!!

37.

Miss Cream Puff says:

bride2be—Sorry I didn’t respond earlier! I suck!!! I originally bought orange and purple boxes, and they just didn’t look good TOGETHER. You should be fine with oatmeal. My boxes are 3.5×3.5×2. They’re pretty big. In retrospect it might have been better to buy smaller ones, just because it takes a lot of eggs to fill up this size.
