…Dance! Dance I Say!

HERE IT GOES DOWN
DOWN INTO MY BELLY

(loosely interpreted quote from Anchorman)

There just aren’t enough posts about music on Weddingbee these days. Too much talk about bodyboarding and missing mamas. :) So, to fill in the gap, I’m presenting my first rough ’sketch’ of our reception playlist. Note: our music tastes are REALLY eclectic, so we narrowed it down to music that:

A) had a good beat - make no mistake, ours will be a dancing wedding - our guests will dance until their feet bleed (at which point we will offer them monogrammed towel favors)

B) had a special meaning to us

C) had a good beat (did I mention the dancing?)

As you can see, most of them are oldies - jazz standards, motown hits, doo-wop, disco - I’m a big nut for anything older than I am! So, now I have a million or so fast-paced songs… but there are still so many songs to choose - for slower dances, for eating, for toasts, for the cake-cutting, for the ‘official’ dances (ie, father-daughter, NOT the chicken dance)…

Does anybody have any suggestions for slower songs, especially songs for during dinner?

For dinner we’re doing a lot of Chet Baker - it’s soft and classy.

First off, our playlists share like 80% of the songs! Love, love that you have the “Get Out of My Dreams” song.

As far as slow songs, we’re using a lot of Dean Martin and Micheal Buble. You might the slower songs from Ben Folds, like “The Luckiest” and “Lullaby”; also Ray LaMontagne’s “Hanna,” and “Hold You in My Arms,” - everything by Ray is good, really.

You may also find some useful things in Broadway Musical soundtracks - not at all my style, but some people really enjoy that kind of music.

For our dinner music, we are using scores from movies. Not really our favorite movies but just slower sounding instrumentals that sound like “dinner music.” Some people may recognize the songs, some may not but we thought it was a good idea. It did take hours on itunes to make a decent list but it was worth it. I had a friend that used Coldplay songs during her dinner hour.

I’m the same way about music-I like stuff that was played out decades before I was even born!

I’m a swing DJ, and here are some of the standard wedding songs for swing dancing you might want to check out:

Solid As A Rock - Ella Fitzgerald
I Love Being Here With You - Ernestine Anderson
Cheek To Cheek - Ella and Louis Armstrong (the best version of this song, IMHO)
Knock Me A Kiss - Louis Jordan
All Right, OK, You Win - Joe Williams (with Count Basie)
A Guy Is A Guy - Ella Fitzgerald

Slower songs:
Sweet Lorraine - Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole
My Baby Just Cares For Me - Nina Simone
You Are My Sunshine - Bill Henderson (and Oscar Peterson)

Most of these are available on iTunes, emusic or Amazonmp3 for download. Good luck!

Miles Davis “Kind of Blue” for dinner. Or for the cocktail hour. It’s the perfect party background music.

I really like “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” for a slower song.

One of my fave slower songs is At Last by Etta James — certainly a crowd pleaser at weddings.

For dinner music, I’m thinking of picking music that’s low-key jazzy but non-descript — I don’t know what that is, but am hoping my DJ does :) I always am dissapointed when I hear good Sinatra at dinner and no one is dancing to it!

We are doing a lot of Enya for dinner. MY FI’s family loves her. We are also doing a lot of Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller Band and Bing because I love them and they have great standards to listen to during weddings. If you want some great love songs and father daughter songs that are slow check out some fo the country artists. Betterfly Kisses is probably what my dad and I will dance too but there are 2 recent songs about fathers and daughters that are great too…Cinderella and I can’t remeber the other but I think it’a Kenny Chesney.

It’s not an oldie, but we’re going to be playing Death Cab for Cutie’s “I’ll follow you”. I think it’s a sweet song.

You seem to have forgotten “A Kiss to Build a Dream On.” I’m sure it’s on another part of the list I just didn’t see. :)

Honestly, for the cake, we had Ethel Merman and Ray Bolger doing “If I Knew You Were Coming I’d Have Baked a Cake.” For us, it fit the tone of the event; probably wouldn’t work for everyone, though.

I love quotes, how’s about this one:

“Beneath the clothes we find a man….
& beneath the man we find……

…His nucleus.”

Movies are great.

miss shortcake -

I was just listening to a group called the puppini sisters & they made me think of you! they sing in the 1940s jazz style. BUT, even more fun, they do modern covers, like a killer “crazy in love” & “walk like an egyptian.” I think you need to check it out!
