DIY - Sea Salt Scrub

February 22nd, 2008 @ 1:01 pm by Ms. Dahlia

So I’ve been trying to take better care of myself lately, especially my skin. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m fairly breakout prone, on my face, back and shoulders.

Last year, Mr. Dahlia gave me a spa package for my birthday, and one of the most amazing parts of it was a sea salt body scrub. Afterwards, my skin was much clearer, and softer, which suggests that exfoliation is not overrated at all.

Given that, I wanted to try and get my skin feeling the same way, but as the grad student that I am, resources are, shall we say, limited.

So what’s the alternative? Making the sea scrub myself. It’s really easy, and it actually makes quite a difference. Here’s the recipe I’ve been using, which is a combination of several recipes I found online.

Sea Salt Scrub
1 c. coarse sea salt
1/2 c. olive oil
several drops of tea tree oil

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl. Pour mixture into a sealable container. (I used a clean, empty mason jar.)

It’s easiest to use in the shower. Basically, rub it all over your body, and then rinse. Because the oil can leave a fairly strong residue, I use a mild soap after I’ve rinsed. And as a word of caution- make sure to do this before you shave, and not after, as the salt will (obviously) sting any cuts.

Notes: Tea Tree Oil is a natural antiseptic that helps with the acne; you could use other essential oils, like lavender or rose, if you want something that smells better. You could also use any other type of coarse salt.

Erin: You can buy tea tree oil at the body shop, or any ‘health’ food store such as Whole Foods.

Miss Dahlia: This sounds awesome! I am acne prone too, and I think stress from planning & work is making my back break out (it usually doesn’t :|). I will have to try this, for sure!

You might also try exfoliating with sugar. It doesn’t sting and is a super cheap option for exfoliation! Just regular sugar. Rub all over your body in the shower and rinse off.

Thanks for the tips! Anybody has tips for a healthy face? I have extremely dry skin and have never been to a facial :) If there are some home remedies w/ a great moisturizer recommendation, that’d be awesome :D

This sounds great for the body. My dermatologist told me never to use an exfoliant on my face though… Maybe it’s because I was using Queen Helene (which has large exfoliating grains) but she said she could see scarring on my skin from using it.

sphbride: My extremely dry skin has benefited from facial oil. You can get oils through DHC and Shu Umura (sp) but I use Miracell from Walgreen’s. It’s non comodegenic and it smells quite nice.

I have dry sensitive skin and have gotten sugar scrubs in the past and loved them. I never thought just regular sugar at home would work the same way!

Melody: just regular table sugar?

Littlefoot - yes, just regular table sugar. I just buy a big bag in the baking aisle for a few dollars and use about 3/4c in the shower. It really doesn’t take much and leaves your skin feeling fablous as it doesn’t have the drying effects of salt.

Some other types of oil that can also be found at health food stores are jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and my all time favorite kukui nut oil.
