Boardwalk Sweets

February 27th, 2008 @ 4:06 pm by Mrs. Petunia

We went back and forth on the whole candy buffet idea, but then decided what better to go with our touch of Monopoly than conjuring up the image for our guests of old Atlantic City and sweets from the Boardwalk?

The first decision we made was to really have more of a pre-set table than a real buffet: that is, we’re not setting up any bulk candy in jars or buying scoops (what would we do with them afterward anyway?), but instead settled on pre-packaging everything.

Our selections? For the most part, candy reminiscent of the boardwalk: Cracker Jack, salt water taffy, cotton candy, caramel apples, etc. (we snuck some Smarties in there for no other reason that we’re addicted to those things ourselves!):

We bought boxes from the Martha Stewart Craft collection and other bags and tins at Michaels, and ordered custom labels online from myweddinglabels.com:

We ordered pre-packaged 2 oz. cotton candy containers (supposedly good for 9 MONTHS) from Dandy Cotton, but got these monstrosities instead:

The kind people at Dandy though are re-shipping the right size containers and offered us the wrong shipment in addition as a form of apology: good golly, there’s going to be cotton candy a-plenty in the Petunia house for a loooooong time!

The large lollies were a bit hefty in price, so there will just be a few of them, mostly for “pretty,” and to display them and the caramel apples, I stole this idea from the latest issue of MS Weddings, I think. I bought some Styrofoam blocks (totally NOT eco-friendly, I know) and gift-wrapped them:

I still have a couple more to make actually… and technically, one is supposed to make holes in the Styrofoam first, I think, before wrapping, but please, like I’d be able to line up the paper with the holes anyway! It won’t be perfect, but I hope it will still be sweet?

I love your candy idea, super sweet!

As far as the lolly stands, you could always use a nail to poke holes through the paper and foam to keep it looking neat. That way you wont have to try to line anything up or force the lolly sticks through paper and foam.

Hope it all turns out the way you want!! :)

Smarties are totally acceptable to be in there - they are made in NJ (in my hometown, actually!), not terribly far from the shore and the boardwalks. So there you go, totally fitting with your theme!

So clever! Love it. I was going to try and tackle those lollipop styrofoam stands, but I can’t find where I originally saw them. Pretty please post a tutorial? :)

You could give the extra cotton candy away to your students on their next exam day.

Mr. beanchar always takes a big bowl of candy in whenever he’s giving a test. He thinks it helps relax the mood a little and a little sugar burst never hurt an exam-addled brain, right? Also, they LOVE him for it. ;)

i like this idea! so how did you break down the numbers per candy? are you intending that each guest picks one? or grabs however many?

Oh! I’m so super happy to hear that my Smarties count!

Lovebug: You know I’m all thumbs when it comes to DIY, but I’ll let y’all know how they come out when I try to actually stick the lollies in! The funny thing is I didn’t even BUY that issue and my subscription had already run out at this point! I happened to steal a glance at it at the airport a couple of weeks ago!
Mr. Petunia is concerned about the physics of it all, what with the lolly sticks perhaps being too long and the styrofoam pieces not being thick enough, but we’ll see what happens…

Tea: You know, I’m not really sure how what crazy formula I ended up using to come up with the final #’s, but we have about a 100 guests and I will be putting together about the following:

60 tins with Smarties
32 bags with Cracker Jack
36 boxes with salt water taffy
32 containers of cotton candy
8 caramel apples
8 lollipops

So I guess there are 176 pieces altogether. I suppose some people won’t take any, some will take one, some will take more. Whatever’s there is there: I’m not stressing about it too much…I think more than anything I just wanted to fill the table?

Oh, and the paper, which really is lovely if I may so myself, I bought online!

Hi Mrs. Petunia!
I’m hoping my other message got to you, but just incase–
If you still have lots of big extra tubs left– Would you want to sell a handful? Let me know, I would love to buy some, but I don’t need the amount they sell per case on the website :)
Thanks!
