About Mrs. Shortcake

Choose Miss Shortcake’s Cake!

February 27th, 2008 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

Everyone who knows about Ann Woods, loves Ann Woods. I am no exception (Exhibit A: giant sign on my lawn reading “I HEART A.W.”), and was thrilled/intoxicated/falling-down-drunk-and-giggling-hysterically-punch-drunk in love with these caketoppers:

However, my mother objected to the A.W. caketopper on three counts:

1) They were dangerously nearing the cost of a whole cake
2) They didn’t make any sense to her :”Birds? Who puts birds on a cake?”

And after explaining that quite a few people put birds on cakes (ie, Miss Penguin, Miss Canary, Miss Gummibear, etc) she was mollified but still insisted:

3) that my crafting genes were better employed making a caketopper myself

So off I went, collecting fabric and bits and bobs and cutting out prototypes, when I realized that everyone puts birds on wedding cakes now (exaggerating, I know) and I didn’t need to copy them, now did I?

So instead, I decided to make deer.

They’ll be very similar to the following caketopper, but instead of being “glam” I’ll craft them to be more vintage-kitchy-cute.

The cake itself will be put on some sort of pink vintage cake stand, either in ceramic or glass. I also love me some hob-nail, but the display ultimately depends on the design of the cake itself.

This is where you come in, darling reader - we need to finalize our cake design in order to receive accurate baker quotes!

THE INSPIRATION

THE FINALISTS:

Mr. Shortcake and I have weeded through all of the cakes on the previous inspiration boards, and have narrowed it down to the following four options. Please remember that our deer will be on top of the cake, so the final design has to “jive” with that venison vibe.

CONTESTANT A:

(from flickr user becheery)

* without top bows

CONTESTANT B:

(from flickr user pinkcakebox)

CONTESTANT C:

(from flickr user becheery)

*without monogram topper

CONTESTANT D:

(from marthastewart)

*in pale pink fondant

Which one do you prefer? A, B, C, or D?

I love Cake D! I think it will work really well with your deer. It’s simple and beautifully decorated, and the deer can almost appear to be grazing atop it. Adorable!

B or D. Though if it’s B I’d take out the top and bottom tier bows and just have the one. Too fussy otherwise. And I’d make sure that one of your deer had a bow on it, to (no pun intended) tie it all together.

Considering the vintage aspects of your wedding, AND the deer…i would go with ‘B’.

PS - great job on the deer…they are super cute!

I love the simple dots of B, but I agree with these other ladies that say D works best with the theme. Who wouldn’t love deer grazing in a delicious meadow of fondant?

I think the A cake will look best-it’s vintage-y but it’s also whimsical and cute, like your topper.

I think D would be best with the deer - not too cutesey, a little organic (to go with the topper), and still beautiful!

The deer are very 1950’s kitsch, and cake B matches that idea. It would be very sweet with the deer on top!

B or D. I love the simple classiness of B. but D has an out door-sey ness bc of the flowers. ultimately i’m leaning towards B.

I think B would look best since it has that same retro vibe that your deer have and I think D would look a little too theme-y. B looks classy but will still be cute and totally work with your deer.

And great job on the deer by the way they are super cute!

ya, like most of the people here, I’d go with Cake D. I might be one of the only guys actually responding.

If you just tweaked the cake a bit to make it more “nature” like (i.e grasslike) and add the deers on top, it would look like they are grazing.

I too was loving the birds, but went through the same thought process as you: 1) the birds are out of my budget 2) I can make something 3) why do birds like everyone else????
I love the deer - very very cute.

I like cakes B and D.

I don’t like A with the deer on top - even without the bow. Too fussy.

D for DEER!

All the cakes are cute, but D has the perfect tiptoe-ing through the sun-dappled forest vibe.

AND

I agree with everyone else that D complements the vintage theme and would mesh well with the deer. However, I think C has a better vintage feel and B is very 50’s housewife with its polka dots and prim ribbons. :) You don’t really need to emphasize nature inspirations with one element just because of the deer. You can customize. Also, I love the blue and white icing, especially if you can get it in French Blue!

Also, did you make the deer yourself? Or is that an inspiration picture from somewhere else? Great job!

I’ll be honest. I don’t get the deer thing. Are you gonna have the clay-mation Frosty the snowman on a lower level?

I just don’t see the deer working well with many cakes out there. I think you could do much better than what that person came up with. What about rabbits? Just don’t put chocolate sprinkles on the top…cause well, then, your animals just made a mess.

Hey Buzzin

“that person” happened to be ME who made those deer, and FYI, they’re forest deer, as in BAMBI, as in one of my favorite movies, as in NOT REINDEER. Thanks for totally slamming something that took 13 hours to make…hand sewn entirely.

I first went for B, but then when I was D I knew that would be the one for me!
And don’t pay any mind to conflicting opinions (although you did ask for them!) Everyone’s entitled to their own, even if they do come across as insulting to someone who has poured hours into creating something special.
Your deer are wonderful and I think it will all look delightful.
Good luck with everything!

D all the way. A is way too busy and will take away from the focus of your deer.

I like the idea of making the little flowers grassy instead - maybe long grass with small little daffodils or daisies poking out? or whatever you’re using for your bouquet, in miniature.
