Save Our Date!

February 27th, 2008 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Sundae

Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates Untitle01Our Save the Dates are finally complete and as far as I know have been received by almost everyone, so I can finally share all the pictures. I bought a rose clipart file from clipart.com and used Adobe Illustrator to change it to a light green color. Then I flipped and turned the graphic and placed different parts of it around the square. That’s all of them above, waiting to be stuffed and sent.

Here is a close-up:Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates 1I wish that you could see the texture of the paper better, it’s the best part. I bought textured card stock from my local JoAnn Fabrics while they were having a sale. I cleaned out the entire bin because they were 5 sheets for $1, and I decided I could get two cards out of every sheet. Here is what the back looks like:
Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates 4I cut the 12×12 paper in half and then printed on both sides to get a bi-fold card. I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time getting everything to line up on the printer, but it worked out in the end. There was some trimming to be done on each end, but I quickly realized that it was easier to make everything line up when I folded them first and then trimmed both ends together. Here is the inside, before all the trimming took place. They look much better without all the black lines that blur out the details but you can get the idea!Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates 6It turns out that some of the paper I bought was softer than other sheets, and the thicker sheets didn’t perform very well when folded. Basically the textured parts cracked and made the seam on the fold look uneven. I tried everything I could think of and then my MacGyver of a fiance suggested I steam each of them for a few seconds to soften everything up:Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates Dsc0158Not the most enjoyable task but it got the job done! For the back of the envelopes, I used my lovely customized address stamp from Expressionery. If you’re going to be living in the same place after you get married I highly recommend one, it took me about 10 minutes to stamp all of the envelopes (I used our first initials so we can use the stamp after the wedding):Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates Dsc0159And at last, they’re all in their respective envelopes and ready to go. I ordered the stamps from USPS.com, and they arrived two days later. I think the shipping was $1 or something minimal, much easier than fighting the lines at the post office.
Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates Dsc0160I ordered the envelopes from Paper-Source, and printed everything on our trusty home printer. I can’t even begin to explain how relieved I am that they’re finished! The design and assembly really wasn’t that bad, but the printing was a labor of love. However, I did have a partner in crime who oversaw the entire process:Save Our Date! : wedding diy lake geneva save the dates Dsc015801Since 90% of our guest list lives outside of Wisconsin, I included information on airports to use, travel options, and how to reserve rooms in our hotel blocks. Most of the guys that received them commented on it being too much information (this includes Mr. Sundae) but I think it was worth it.

Did you send save the dates? If so, did you create them yourselves?

I actually don’t know the exact model of printer we have (sorry) but it’s an HP 3-in-1. One of those printer/scanner/copier things. I can look it up if you want!

we did STDs (i hate that abbreviation by the way!) but ours were magnets of one of our engagement pics with our date and website info. all our hotel/travel/local activities are listed on the website for them to access.

funny that you posted your pup… my kitty sat faithfully by my printer as I printed all the STD envelopes! God bless our loyal animals

Those are really nice! I’m loving the texture of the paper.

Here’s mine… We did them all ourselves too!

Beautiful! Great design. I totally know what you mean about labor of love when it came to printing. I printed mine in fours (postcards) and then had them trimmed at Kinko’s. They did an awesome job!

We made ours very similarly to how you did…except I used photoshop Elements and downloaded the clipart from designer digitals dot com. I had so much fun! They were inspired by Miss Penguin’s design for her Save the Dates. :)

Not sure if these will work, but here they are:

Really nice project!

Your dog reminds me of my dog’s best dog buddy, who is a Havanese. What breed is she? (She’s super cute).

Sure - the flowers are just clipart. I used Adobe Illustrator & just made a box the size that I wanted the card, then inserted 4 of the same flower graphic. I rotated and flipped them to make them look a little different, and that’s it! Hope that helps…if you want more detailed instructions just let me know.
