About Mrs. Penguin

Should It Stay Or Should It Go?

February 27th, 2008 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Penguin

I’m visiting my dress today, and of course, I’m nervous as ever. The sales lady ordered the sample size that I tried on at the store, because it fit just perfectly, however, it was a little TOO perfect (think squeezing-a-sausage into-the-casing perfect). So I was supposed to drop 5 pounds, which of course, I didn’t… but the sooner I see that that puppy doesn’t zip up, the faster I can maybe start motivating to hit the gym a little harder.

On the off chance that the dress DOES fit, I’m having the alterations done in-store, because I’ve heard good things about their services. Once it’s finished, I’m considering bringing it home to my parents’ house for storage. My friend, who has also bought her dress at the same shop, doesn’t want to bring her dress home, for fear that her Fiance will take a peek. I’m lucky enough to have my old room at my parents’ house to store it at, since I’m getting married near my hometown, so the risk of Mr. Penguin peeking is very low.

But this raises the dilemma… Will I peek too much? Will I try it on 20 million times only to rip/stain/BeeTV cast in it ten too many times? I fear that my lack of restraint (of any kind) will inflict serious damage/harm to my pristine wedding dress. But I also worry that if I leave it at the store, then the “what if’s” are out of my hands… flood, fire, bankruptcy… who knows. I can be sure if a fire ravages through the bridal shop, they will NOT be grabbing my wedding dress on the way out. Of course, this is all extreme paranoia on my part, but you just never know!

So I ask you… did you bring your dress home when it was ready, or did you have it stored at the bridal salon until your wedding day?

On bad days… I put my dress on and pranced in the 300 ft of my apartment.

But… I was planning on having it dry cleaned right before the wedding.

Trust me, you’ll prance and worry that you bought the right dress and put on the veil too. It’s a dangerous move darling ;) think wisely!

As the “friend” in the post, I also feel that I would peak and try on and obsess over making the right decision. But I can’t wait to prance around the bridal store with you today Penguin!!!

I’m going to have mine kept at the store- mostly because the logical place to keep it (my parents’ house) has animals (cat and dog) that I would rather not have near my dress.

But I totally hear you on having the dress fit too tightly. And I was also supposed to lose about 5 lbs. I’ve lost (and regained) 1.

My dress was a little tight when it came in, so I took it home to “monitor my weight loss”. Scale??? Bah!

Thank goodness it’s at my parents house else I’d prance around bad day in it! But I feel better having it at my parents house in case I need to “check if the hair comb matches the beading” or “match shoes”.

I had originally kidnapped mine, but last week after an initial consultation, I turned it back over to the shop again. For some reason, it’s more exciting me to me to have to wait again? I dunno. But I will say that when I had it on, I put it on all dee time.

How exciting! You’re going to have a blast.

My eBay dress sat in its shipping box in the bathtub of the guest bathroom untouched for months. The one thing that might save you from too much prancing, staining, etc is the fact that putting on a wedding gown can be hard work! It was like “Ooh, there’s my dress, want to wear now! But…man, do I really want to go through the rigmarole of wrestling it out of the various bags, trying to get into it, dragging the train across the carpeting, then trying to get out of it, get it properly back on the hanger, and wrestle it back into its bags?”

Now, the veil, that was different. Not nearly the time investment the gown would have been. I probably wore that thing about once a week.

I have had mine in our apartment since December (it came in early) where it will be till we fly home for the wedding in May. I thought I would also be tempted to try it on repeatedly, but actually I’ve only tried it on about 3 times so far, and always for a reason - to see how it looks with the shoes, with my trial bouquet, etc. It’s kind of a hassle to get on and off, so I don’t think to put it on very often! And I’m terrified of hurting it or getting it dirty, so the conditions have to be just right - I’m fresh out of the shower - but not still sweaty from working out, the floor has recently been swept, etc…

Oh yeah, and FI has no interest in seeing it when I’m not in it, so that’s not a problem for us.

I kept mine in the closet at my parent’s home and I thought it was such a hassle to take out so I never did until the morning of.

I got my dress from David’s Bridal, so they made me take it home (no choice!) I brought it to my mom’s house though so I’m only tempted to try it on when I’m over… which has been quite a few times! I have my fitting this weekend so I’ll be trying it on again then too. It’s just too much fun not to!

I plan on getting mine cleaned and pressed before the wedding. This is especially necessary since my mom has a black dog who SHEDS. Eek!

:)

The store is keeping it safe for me. Yay! That means no hassle about transporting the dress many times or getting it dirty.

The store kept it for me. The day before the wedding, my dad and cousin picked up the beautiful thing and took it to my friend’s house (where I got ready for the big day). They freshly steamed it the day we picked it up…and that is the main reason I left it there, I didnt want a wrinkly dress!!

My mother made my dress, and she wouldn’t let me have it! But I had a backup dress and I didn’t feel the slightest bit bad about occasionally trying that on. :)

I took my dress to my parent’s house. David’s Bridal didn’t offer to keep it, but I would have taken it anyway. They will clean it for free for me before the wedding, though.

Mine has been at my parents for almost a year now, and I’ve been able to only try it on a handful of times :-)

But they’re just far enough away that I’m not often “in the area” - if I was, I might’ve seen if the store could hold onto it!

I have an ebay dress, which I’m picking up from my wonderful alterations person on Saturday. I have a small apartment with 2 shedding dogs and little available closet space, so I’m going to get it cleaned soon (wedding is in June) and then store it in an acid-free box from the Container store (and wrap it in acid-free tissue). My dress is on the more delicate side - it’s silk chiffon and up close you can see a little bit of wear - so I hope the temptation won’t be too strong to try it on.

I stored the dress at home. I did wear it a couple times, with my little sidekick, my teen sister to help me in and out of the dress. And I made sure to not wear it during the heat.

Mine was stored at my friend’s home. It was safe and yet I wouldn’t be able to be tempted to peek! kekeke I think you should be okay to take it home. You might peek but you won’t be putting it on much - it’s too difficult to get in and out of a lot and you’ll be pooped!

I will probably have the store hold it. We have cats who might get hair on it and my parent’s houses are worse. The only possibility is to bring it to my grandmother’s were the wedding will be. I will also probably have the store hold on to it because the weddign is 4 hours away and I want to have the last altration close to the wedding but near where I live. It can then be pressed and ready to go before the long drive to my wedding site.

I brought mine home and only tried it on once for my mom, and now the store has it again for alterations. I agree with Sarah and Mrs. Snow Pea, it’s a lot of hard working putting it on and taking it off, and if I did it a lot I’m worried the beading with get all jacked. Once I get it back, a friend has offered to keep it in their extra bedroom, but I just don’t know if I want it out of my control. My FI won’t peek, he knows I’ll kill him. And he wants to be surprised, so I have the utmost confidence in him.

Now, the veil is going to be another story. The other day I was “practicing” and had my shoes, petticoat and corset bra on (to get used to wearing and moving around in it all) and I can see the veil becoming an addition to that ensemble. I just have to plan better because FI came home early and saw me and just rolled his eyes.

when it’s done, i’m bringing that baby home with me, so that I know it’s safe with me. I think you’ll be too busy to unzip that baby. PUt a little padlock on it and give the key to your mom. LOL!

I did both…I picked it up about two weeks before the wedding after they had given it a final steaming. It hung on our 3rd floor, where Mr Corn doesn’t frequent, with an exercize ball under the train to keep it from wrinkling (yes, I am that tall).

If you don’t have a set up like that to keep the gown from getting wrinkled, than I would suggest keeping it at the store.

I left it at the store. I was able to go try it on whenever I wanted to test out shoes/accessories. I picked it up to wear the day of my bridal portraits and it was all pretty and unwrinkled - then I dropped it back off.

I picked it up day of the wedding - it was in perfect wedding condition :)

I’m the only one that lives here - and I didn’t want the hassle of storing it at my house. Plus I wasn’t prancing for anyone - I kept the dress a secret from everyone except my mom (who shopped with me) and photographer (bridal portraits) until the day of the wedding. The groom wasn’t the only one surprised :)

I left it at the bridal shop until it was time to get it altered. I have a cat and not too much closet space, so that was a no-brainer. I did take closeup photos of the beading, etc., and lots of photos of me in it so I had records for comparison when buying other items.

Once it was altered I took it home to my parents’ house and left it there for the month before the wedding. They had it cleaned for me the week before the wedding, so it was in pristine condition for the big day!

i’m so glad you wrote this post penguin, b/c i am debating the same thing! the thing is, i still have to transport it to LA somehow…how to do it w/o getting it all wrinkly! haha i’m thinking i might bring it home and monitor my weight loss with it hahahaa. but…i haven’t decided yet. i’m so paranoid that some disaster will happen and it will get ruined! but i suppose that could happen anywhere right? :P hmmmmmmmmmmm.

well, i’ll let you know what i decide! and let us know what you decide too!

I was glad I brought mine home. I was able to try my shoes, veil, strapless bras, and jewelry on with it when I finally did purchase those items.

I averaged about 2 peaks a week but only tried it on 3 times when I needed to ’cause like someone mentioned above, it’s not the most easiest garment to get in and out of. :-)

My dress lived at the store until the week of the wedding. Now it lives in a closet in my guest room :)

my dress stayed @ the store until 3 days before my wedding only because they were already charging me a storage fee along with my alterations and pressing fees, so i decided if i was being charged they could keep it until i was clsoe to the date… if they hadn’t of charged me, it would have been hanging at my parents house the day it was finished;

I amen those who say it’s hard work. I ordered mine online and thus had no choice but to have it at my parents’ home. I received it a few days ago and immediately tried it on only to see that it was *gasp* a bit too small! It can easily be fixed with alterations but it was a bit of a blow. Darn that back fat. At any rate, I would love to try it on again but the thought of having to do all that work to put it on is turning me off.
