Getting Over The Ick

February 28th, 2008 @ 12:12 pm by Mrs. Donut

Today I am not feeling so great. I’m achy and my throat hurts and I feel a little bit out of it. I am always very aware of my throat because, in addition to being a singer, I also have chronic strep throat. The first term of my sophomore year in college I came down with a really hideous case of strep throat. Ever since then the pesky illness has made an unwelcome appearance at least twice a year and usually whenever I am the most stressed out. The week before my sister’s wedding, where I was a bridesmaid AND the soloist, it payed me a visit. I had a fever of 104 and couldn’t speak for the few days before the ceremony. Thankfully I made a rather miraculously recovery for the day of and was able to pull off all my duties, but the high fever coupled with the 10 or so pounds I lost left me pretty weak. I made it through the reception, but crashed at the after party my parents threw at their house.

Since then I’ve become hyper aware ANY time my throat even begins to twitch and I now know the other little symptoms that usually accompany a possibly severe case as well. The day before our elopement in Japan I woke to some uh oh signs and I immediately began the hunt for Vitamin C and lots of it. I discovered this little guy at the corner store…

Pokka lemon 1000 has, you guessed it, 1000mg of Vitamin C and was super effective at keeping the sick at bay. I drank two bottles and the next day I was fine. Now, whenever I feel like I might be getting sick, I just drink a bottle or two and I feel great.

I just hope I can find it in London.

Do you take any preventative measures (especially before a big event) when you start feeling sick?

Emergen-C with orange juice works wonders! I was the only one not sick over the holidays from work.

Sambazon with the Acai berry is good. Although I haven’t really gotten sick to use it for a quick recovery. Before I started to drink this I would use Emergen C with water twice a day.

Hope you feel better.

Miss Donut, do you still have your tonsils? I would seriously consider having them taken out, if you do. With chronic strep throat, you are a prime candidate. My fiance used to get strep 2-3 times each year, and when he was on the wards during medical school somehow it came up in conversation, and the resident he was working with was SHOCKED that nobody had ever told him to have them taken out.
He had them out 3 years ago, and hasn’t had strep (or really, been sick from anything other than allergies) since!

I think airborne orange taste better than the Emergen C orange.

I wonder if they will have that drink at Mitsuwa or Marukai (japanese grocery stores in CA.)

I drank Emergen C the week before my wedding. With all the family in town the week before our wedding (and the stress) both my husband and I were sick, but I ended up feeling pretty decent by the wedding day. It did put a little bit of a damper on the festivities the few days before the wedding. We were so exhausted!

I would also recommend limiting the alcohol intake at the pre-wedding festivities if your sick. Hangover and a cold/flu are horrible.

EmergenC and Airborne are both great. Note that Airborne has Lysine, which is a great anti-viral - I also take Lysine separately during cold season.

I used to get strep throat ALL THE TIME. Then I had my tonsils out and I haven’t had it since. It’s sooo worth it.

I also agree with the girls about getting your tonsils out. Many people don’t know this but repeated outbreaks of strep throat can also cause damage to your heart valves. If you get it once a year, that means you will get it ~80 times in your life! Please, see a doctor.

Hot lemon: lemon juice, hot water and honey. Oh, and lots of garlic bread. For whatever reason, garlic makes me feel better.

Right now, I’m sporting some similar symptoms…yay fun.

Because of the singing thing, I’m a little nervous about people coming anywhere near thy throat with a pointy object. But after the bout with before my sister’s wedding, I was planning to have them out when I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. It’s a thyroid condition. They nuked my throat twice with radioactive iodine and oddly, since then, I haven’t had a serious case of strep throat. No one can confirm that the radioactive iodine had any affect on the step throat, so I remain paranoid.
