Taking A Leap

February 29th, 2008 @ 5:05 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

leapfrog

As I’ve discovered since I first started planning, there are a lot of crazy traditions/superstitions when it comes to getting married.

A checklist of lucky items, not seeing the groom before the ceremony, astrological charting - these are all things that seem pretty run of the mill to me now. However, this afternoon while listening to the radio, I was surprised to learn about one a new one today about Leap Years - apparently, today is historically the day where women can be the ones to propose.

While this is an old fashioned notion (women only being able to propose on one day of the year), it made me think about proposals and, I think that if Mr. Hummingbird and I were not engaged, I’d take today as a sign and make the “leap” myself.

I mean we’re a fairly progressive couple and we love each other, so I’d be game. After all, why should it be the guy’s duty to pop the question?

How about you ladies? Did any of you/would any of you do the proposing? Tell me about it!

If we are being technical about this rule, women are only allowed to propose on one day every FOUR years. Better get going!

I would TOTALLY take the leap!! But only with my fiancee because I know he would have said YES! ;-)
He’s more old fashioned though, so while he would’ve said “yes”, we probably wouldn’t have been “officially” engaged until he bought the ring and asked me too.

i really was kind at the end of my rope by the time he actually proposed.

so i was just beginning to seriously consider asking myself. although we feel fairly traditional when it came to it.

i would have googled it. and found out about leap year…and probably would have staged it for today if he hadn’t FINALLY gotten around to it, lol!

but when is started thinking about it, i was completely stumped as to how to pull it off.

I proposed to him! It was great fun to plan it all out and surprise him, and he boasts that he got proposed to! He is also very excited about his engagement ring. :D

I know this folklore! Actually it originated in Ireland something to do with St. Patrick. Seriously, I had this big shindig planned for the 29th of February (we are both Irish, and have discussed having an irish wedding and whatnot many a-time.) where I was going to up and pop the question. But then one night he said “Why don’t we just do it! Let’s just get married next month or something!” Well, I had it all planned, so what’s the point in not proposing with a prelude like that? So, I proposed on the 21st of January instead :-o. Turns out, he wasn’t serious about wanting to hurry and get married but he was serious about wanting to get married (I didn’t know men could be such women until this past month of planning), which works out just as well for me!

My mom told me about this tradition when I was very little and I’ve never heard about it from anyone else until today. Thank you for making me realize my mom isn’t crazy!
My fiance originally proposed to me back in 2006, but yesterday I explained to him this tradition and just for fun asked him to marry me. He said yes of course!
