Mrs. Hummingbird's Picture

About Mrs. Hummingbird

As some of you may remember, long, long ago, I decided on the style of dress I wanted for our attendants.

Back To The Bridesmaid Drawing Board : wedding bridesmaid dress toronto Z814307 bridesmaid

However, yesterday when our Matron of Honour and Best Lady went to try on the mockups for their dresses, I realized that my original style decision had turned into a bit of a nightmare as the pleats I thought were so cute in the picture I saw in the Lazaro catalogue were not working at all with the fabric we were working with. The only way we could get them to look the way they looked in the picture was through internal construction using some sort of boning, which I totally did not want to do. I mean we’re getting married outdoors in June - how massively uncomfortable would it be to be trapped inside some sort of dress cage in that kind of heat?

So, after hashing it out with my seamstress, we decided the best thing to do would be to scrap that detail and go back to the drawing board. I still felt the dresses needed something to jazz them up so they had a bit of shape and a bit of style to them, so we started to talk about doing something along the lines of a sash.

As much as I like sashes (I originally considered doing one with my dress), I was a bit reluctant to automatically go with that option since I wanted to make sure that the sash worked with the dresses and didn’t look weirdly stuck on after the fact. However, after perusing some more dress pictures I think I found some sashes that might work with what we’re doing. So, onto the candidates!

Sash 1: Tone on tone - A sash made from the same fabric as the dress.

Sash 2: Double waist - A small ribbon sash a few inches above the natural waist.

Sash 3: Waist wrap - A thicker belted look without a bow. This one kind of reminds me of an Obi sash.

Sash 4: Double ribbon - This one has two different colours in the sash.
(If we went with this option, the outer colour would match the colour of Mr. Hummingbird’s suit and the inner colour would match the dress fabric.)

Sash 5: Empire sash - My dress has an empire waist so this would kind of echo that.

Sash 6: Natural waist droop bow - This is as close to a butt bow as I want to get.

Sash 7: Flower brooch - Kind of self-explanatory.

So ladies, what do you think? Which style is your favourite or which style would you prefer if you were a Maid/Matron of Honour/Best Lady/Bridesmaid?

I love the look of the waist wrap, but with my body type (plus size) the empire sash looks better on me.

I love the way the double ribbon will tie in the other wedding color.

Whatever you decide, I would go for a sash that’s attached to the dress/easy to tie how you want it. At my sister’s wedding we all realized on the day of that either we didn’t know how to tie the sash correctly or it looked dramatically different on each of us because we had such different body shapes. It turned out to be much more of a pain than we realized.

That said, the last two seem kind of wimpy/floppy to me. I prefer the more substantial sashes.

i like the tone on tone and the empire sash (but probably because empire dresses are my favorite….)

I like the tone-on-tone, waist wrap, or double ribbon.

I love the first one - the fabric that is the same color as the dress is a great idea.

I love the first dress. Is it Lazaro? I’d love to have my girls wear something like that.

I like the third one, the waist wrap. It’s very flattering and could look great on different body types.

1 or 5 would be most flattering if any of your bridesmaids has a thick waist like i do. the first one is nice because it is kind of messily pleated so that wrinkles from sitting won’t show as much.

i agree about kate about the sashes that aren’t attached to the dress unless you have some sort of pinning small stitches holding them it place, they might droop.
