Cupcakes!

March 4th, 2008 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Cream Puff

When Mr. Cream Puff and I decided to tie the knot, we were kinda thinking about doing cupcakes instead of cake, but we weren’t too attached to the idea. We decided to pick whichever ended up being cheaper. Well, they ended costing about the same, and we decided to go with cupcakes. Why? BECAUSE CUPCAKES ARE FREAKIN’ DELICIOUS. Plus, they are very cute and fun, which kind of fits in with our personalities and our theme.

Typically, people who “cupcake” their weddings decide to use cupcake towers, with a little cutting cake on the top. I really like this one, from Bakery Bar in Portland, Oregon:

However, Mr. Cream Puff and I fell in love with the displays at Sibby’s Cupcakery in San Mateo:

We really loved the idea of different cake stands with different levels. Sibby’s rents out these stands, but they were $15 each. At that price, I figured I could buy some and get to keep them after we’re done. My mom and I went to a few thrift stores and found a couple of milk glass cake stands… but they weren’t cheap (about $30 each). To try and buy all milk glass would break the bank.

Then I had the genius idea to turn a glass upside down (or use a candle stick) and place a glass plate on top. They can be secured with epoxy and then, voila! Cake stands! There are TONS of awesome glasses and glass plates in antique stores, and I am really excited with what we got. We also decided to buy the two milk glass cake stands–they were too awesome to say no to. Check out our little display:

The two tiered milk glass one is actually kind of deceiving. The bottom part is an actual cake stand. The top (small) one is actually a milk glass candlestick and a milk glass plate. You might notice that we got a couple of really small plates and placed them on tall champagne glasses. These are for our personal cupcakes. We’re going to get “his” (vanilla) and “hers” (chocolate) giant cupcakes, which we will share instead of cutting the cake. :) Some of the glass is clear, and others are pink or green. I think they will look really cool with light reflecting off of them! Yay!

I *love* it - such a creative idea!!! May I ask how much time you spent looking for the perfect glassware, and how much you ended up spending? I’ve been researching cupcake stands, too, and am horrified by how much the nice ones cost…

It makes me want to go out and get those milk glass plates I sent you a telephone picture of. Those cupcakes better be good. I’m hungry.

Ohmigosh! I might have to steal this idea!!!! Hope you don’t mind. ;) The FH and I both want cupcakes but haven’t loved the cupcake towers that we’ve seen. I too have been looking to purchase some cake stands, but my research suggests that would get awfully expensive. You’ve found the perfect solution! And another way to introduce “vintage” items. I think I love you. :D

LOVE IT!! Love the “milk glass” and what an affordable way to make your own cake stand! I might have to steal the idea just for using at home! :)

Love, love, love. I’m currently fighting with our venue’s wedding coordinator about cupcakes vs. wedding cake — she claims cupcakes are “much more time consuming and expensive” to make than an entire tiered wedding cake, whatevs — so I thought about caving and going with a cake to save $$$. But seeing these holder ideas and the adorable cupcakes reaffirms my original decision. It’s nothing but cupcakes for me! And if they try to charge me mucho dollars, I’ll just tell them to forget it and make ‘em myself. :)

gorgeous! i love how you’re diy’ing some of them too!

seems like i had heard of this idea before, and then forgot about it, but thank you sooo much for posting and reminding me.

i’ve considered doing mutliple stands for cakes or cupcakes, or maybe a mixture of the 2…..and now i can broaden my scope and look for cool glasses and plates too!

You’re getting your cupcakes from Sibby’s?!?! Oh wow…they’re my favorite. (I live in the Bay Area) and we’ve had them countless times at my office’s special events and birthdays…their chocolate ones with the chocolate frosting is my favorite! ;-)

so cute! excellent idea! i love that you use different variety and colours of glass!

do you worry at all about the balance of the plates sitting on top of glasses on candlesticks (say if cupcakes are only taken from one side of the plate?) Be sure to slap some putty or something on those suckers! wouldn’t want the plate to tumble!

This is brilliant, but does epoxy really hold glass together?

I would use clear museum gel instead of epoxy so you can take them all apart later. (You can get it at the Container Store, I don’t know if they have CS’s in CA).

That stuff really holds “objets d’art” and glass to glass…well, let’s just say I nearly ripped a shelf off the wall trying to get it to release the jar I was trying to clean!

Hey, I’ve done that before! It was just for a friend’s bridal shower, though. We actually didn’t expoxy them–and it turned out fine, no problems with un-balancing or people knocking them over. But your plan to stick them together I’m sure will make things even more secure.

I can’t wait to see pictures of them at your reception!
