Now Draw A Duck

Alternate title: “The Bee Who Stole Ideas”
Alternate title: “The Evolution of DIY”

When you’re DIY’ing a wedding, it’s amazing how much your original vision grows as the wedding gets closer. Case in point: 8 months ago, I was 100% sure that I *had* to have a Polaroid guestbook. BUT I also ordered about 140 sage 4bar place cards from Paper Source that I would no longer be using because I also *had* to have origami escort cards. So to continue to reap the benefits of DIY, I had to make some adjustments – mayhaps to the guestbook?

When I was thinking about how else to use these place cards, one thing kept sticking in my mind – a blog that I had read back in my weddingbee lurking days – where Mrs. Lollipop described how they asked their guests to draw a duck on the RSVP cards. To this day, the idea makes me giggle.

So that was it for me. I decided we’d have to have our guests not only sign our guestbook, but also dazzle us with their artistry. And how do the 4bar cards come into play? Well, a la The Jolly Postman, I decided we’d paste each card into the book – not for utility, but gosh daggit, for CUTENESS.

For months now, I’ve been telling Mr. BG about this idea…

Me: “Come on, think of something to draw. Y’knowww, like, ‘draw a duck’!”

Mr. BG: “You keep saying duck. WHY A DUCK?” *unlike Mr. & Mrs. Lollipop, we have no special affinity for ducks*

Me: “It doesn’t have to be a duck, that’s just what Mrs. Lollipop did. So think of something LIKE ‘draw a duck’!”

We thought about kitties. I maaaay have mentioned once or twice that we have three beautiful kitties. We thought about having them draw our portraits (which I still think would be funny). But then, the other night, in a fit of productivity, Mr. BG finally just said - “Y’know what? Nothing sounds as funny as saying ‘now draw a duck’! I think it has to be a duck.”

So months later, here we are, with our guestbook ready to go – a veritable duck pond!

Our Kolo book - any ideas on what to put here on the cover? A picture of us? A thank you note to our guests? A monogram??

And I don’t know how readable this last one is, but it says “please leave us your thoughts…” and “…now draw a duck.”

I, too, stole that idea. And I had that exact conversation with FI. “But why a duck?” he would ask. We are still searching for another item to have our guests draw, but a duck, it is just funny. We live in the desert, so we have been considering asking them to draw us cacti, but something tells me it just won’t be as fun as a duck!

Heeee … I also love that idea … and I love the randomness of a duck even more.

What to have on the cover? Why, a duck of course.

By the way, I definitely want to bring in some aspect of doodling … but can’t decide whether to have it for the RSVPs or guest book.

I think we’re going to have guest ‘cards’ rather than a book, to add to the photo album. Will probably leave a mixture of cards on the tables … i.e. some serious (’Please leave your comments for the happy couple’) but then have ones like ‘Please draw a picture of yourself’ and, of course ‘Now draw a duck’.

What do people think … does this work better with RSVPs or guest book? I’m thinking the guest book has the benefits of peer pressure and alcohol.

a friend of mine made a trivia game (using jenga blocks) in college and one of the blocks read “draw an ostrich”.

we would always get very interesting results!

the more i think about it, the more I need to incorporate that into my wedding!

okay, i LOVED the jolly postman! i used to always read that book everytime we went to the bookstore…just like the pat the bunny books. lol.

and really, there’s nothing funnier and more random than a duck. you gotta go with the duck.

Yeah, I think ducks are inherently funnier than cats. I think it’s the waddling.

I think you have to use a duck in the cut out on the front. That would just be too cute.

Chrissie says:

As for what to put on the front cover, what about a tiny bit of your invitation? We were able to finagle ours so that only our names fit in there.

I swear I remember a friend of mine saying that there’s this theory about drawing a duck, and it says something about your personality which way it faces, etc…
